Jacob's name is enshrined as a member of the 63rd Regiment on the African American Civil War Memorial in Washington, DC along with the other 7000 white officers who volunteered to serve in the USCT. There is family lore that he was a Methodist preacher and circuit rider. At the start of the war he and his family moved to Story Co., IA where he enlisted in the Army. After leaving the army he lived 5yrs Nodaway Co. MO; 8 yrs Story Co IA [where family spent CW]; Rest of the time Gentry Co. MO; 23 Jun 1890 & 25 Feb 1891 Calwell, Sumner Co KS; 27 Apr 1893 Gentry Co MO. This is from his pension records. Rebecca spent all that time in Winfield, Cowley Co. KS. [I believe it was his daughter Emeline that lived in Caldwell.] Apparently Jacob and Rebecca did not live together after he joined the Army in Iowa.
