He signed a will in Payne Co., Oklahoma.11 Marched from Missouri to Georgia in the Grand Army of the Republic during the Civil War with H Co., 23 Missouri Infantry. Terry has a copy of a letter that he sent to his wife and his muster rolls. They show him serving from 1861-1864 as the regimental baker. Don Winkelman's website lists him as John Franklin Winkelman but I have no documentation to substantiate that. John moved his family from Missouri to Kansas sometime between 1866 and 1867. He is listed as operating a Saw Mill in Leavenworth Co., KS in the 1880 census.

John H. WINKELMAN and Nancy PLILEY were married on Aug 10, 1856 in Daviess Co., Missouri.8 Photo Nancy PLILEY9,18,19,20 (daughter of Samuel PLILEY and Jane ROSS) was born in Apr 1836 in Ohio. She died in 1908 in Cushing, Lincoln Co., Oklahoma. She was buried in 1908 in Harrell Cemetery (aka St Leo's), Cushing, Lincoln Co., Oklahoma. Family tradition says she's part Irish and part Indian from Pickaway County, Ohio. Some data shows her marrying John Winkelman in Pickaway Co. OH, but the records indicate Daviess Co., MO. I've seen her name spelled as both PLYLEY and PLILEY. Don Winkelman's website has her listed as Margaret Nancy Pliley, but I can find no indication in any records of that. Census and marriage records all list her as Nancy. John H. WINKELMAN and Nancy PLILEY had the following children:
