Dad fought in WWII and was wounded in the Po Valley in N. Italy in 1945. While he was recovering, the Army mistakenly informed his family that he had been killed, so when he came home from rehab and called them from NY, no one would believe him. He finally pursuaded his cousin Delphus to come get him at the train station in Oklahoma City because his family was convinced that he was some person playing a horrible prank on them.

He sold used and new cars for Charlie Wade before getting his real estate license. He worked for the Atkins agency, then became a broker and formed his own agency, American Realty. He was very successful in this and eventually became a real estate developer, putting together Meadowbrook - an exculsive custom development in what was at that time in far west Lawton. He then developed Pioneer Village - a low-cost development in northwest Lawton that was aimed at military families. He ran unsuccessfully for county commissioner in 1966. He developed cancer when he was 44, but it was treated successfully. He sold the business and retired to Tahlequah, Oklahoma. There he fished and dabbled in the business off and on for the next 15 years. In 1984, his cancer resurfaced in his liver, this time fatally. Dad had an extremely keen eye for detail, and taught all of us to be very observant. He also had quite a temper and it got him in trouble a few times. Some question on birth year. LS records say 1847. The 1870 census lists him as 21 yr old, and the 1880 as 31, so that indicates a birth in 1849, if the Feb 1 is correct. The 1880 census lists him as a farmer. Looks like Frederick was living with him in his later years.
It is very likely that Jake and Eliza raised Samuel after Orie died. Parents: Frederick WINKELMAN and Barbara GARMON.

Terry has a copy of a letter that he sent to his wife and his muster rolls. They show him serving from 1861-1864 as the regimental baker. Don Winkelman's website lists him as John Franklin Winkelman but I have no documentation to substantiate that. John moved his family from Missouri to Kansas sometime between 1866 and 1867.
