Jeremiah Smith was born at Heckmondwike, West Yorkshire, England.   He was born in 1828 according to his age at each census and on his marriage and death certificates.   His marriage certificate gives his father as Joseph Smith, a farmer.   In the 1841 census, Jeremiah, aged 12 years, was living at Tan House, Chapel Lane, Heckmondwike.   His parents were not there.   Other people in the house were John and Susanna Allot and four Allot children.

Jeremiah married Mary Ann Fox at Birstall Parish Church on 24 December 1848.   Heckmondwike is in the Parish of Birstall.   Their children were born at Chapel Lane, Heckmondwike:

Thomas Smith, born 4 April 1849.
Joseph Smith, born 12 April 1850.
Martha Smith, born 10 April 1852, married Tim Archer, Mark Walker and Levi Wood.
Emily Smith, born 27 March 1855, married Tom Illingworth, two children.
Jeremy Smith, born 15 December 1859.
Edgar Smith, born 23 September 1862.
Sarah Smith, born 27 August 1864, married Joseph Blamires.
James Benoni Smith, born 28 April 1866.
Allen Smith, born 1869 and died 27 December 1924.

Jeremiah's wife, Mary Ann, died on 13 November 1890 at Cawley Lane, Heckmondwike.
Jeremiah married secondly, Martha Glover, at Heckmondwike on 21 November 1895.

Jeremiah Smith, a master confectioner, died at Staincliffe Road, Upper Dewsbury on 3 January 1906.
