William Urmston Searle Glanvill Richards who wrote the book Records of the Anglo-Norman House of Glanvill states that our tree is connected to the Glanvills of Broadhinton in Wiltshire and prior to that from Tavistock in Devon, this has not been proved and I generally disagree with his findings ... as others do who co research with me. He states that Edward Glanvill of Ashburton was the son of John and Catherine Fortescue, they did have a son called Edmund that died at age 4 years. Extensive research has been unable to prove who the Edward in Ashburton Devon really is although we have theories. But I tend to believe he was not the father of Richard who married Elizabeth Sainthill. Devon Records Office have conformed with me that the Register at Ashburton has been tampered with and that this entry for the Birth of Richard to Edward in 1704 may be suspect. I am more inclined to believe that Richard was the son of Thomas Glanvill of Exeter who was a fuller by trade. However our tree can begin with certainty with Richard Glanvill born around 1700 and married Elizabeth Sainthill in Ashburton in 1722. Richard and Elizabeth had 8 children. Their son Richard born in 1735 married first to Mary Halse in Ashburton. She died and he then remarried Sarah Couch of Maker in Cornwall on 8th June 1758 in St Andrews Church, Plymouth, Devon. I am descended through their son Edward who married Ann Spriddle, in 1782 in Maker Cornwall, their son Richard Glanvill who married Susanna Harvey, in 1805 in Maker Cornwall, then their son Thomas Glanvill who married Elizabeth Saxon in Stoke Damerel on 11th November 1838. Thomas was employed by HM Customs and moved to several places over the years having children along the way including, Isle of Wight, Hampshire, Beer in Devon and finally in Kingston upon Hull in Yorkshire. They were the parents of my Great Grandmother Hannah Glanvill who married Walter Edward Barratt in Colyton, Devon in 1868, Hannah and Walter Barratt then shifted to Wigan in Lancashire. Their son Herbert John Barratt was my Grandfather. Herbert John Barratt and his wife Margaret Barratt (nee Santus) migrated to Australia in 1912 with four of their children, Elsie, Lily, Marian and Herbert (my father), a fifth child Alan Glanvill was born later in Australia. I would be so happy to hear from anyone connected to any part of my family, and can help with more extensive details of my tree. |
