The first of the Glanvill family to appear in the parish registers of Ashburton, Devon was Edward Glanvill who married Charity Tinckham there on 24 August 1703. Edward is said to be a son of John Glanvill and Catherine Fortescue who were married in 1652. The children of Edward and Charity were baptised at Ashburton: Richard (1704), John (1706-1707), Joan (1708), John (1710-1712) and Elizabeth (1714). The son, Richard Glanvill, married Elizabeth Sainthill at Ashburton on 31 August 1722. Their children, baptised at Ashburton, were: Thomas (1723), Joanna (1726), Richard (1729), (Richard (1733), Richard (1735), Elizabeth (1738-1738), Elizabeth (1740) and Roger (1743). The third child to be given the name Richard survived and he married Mary Halse at Ashburton on 19 January 1755. They had a daughter Mary Glanvill, baptised at Ashburton on 25 July 1755. The daughter survived, but the mother, Mary, died and was buried on 9 May 1756. Richard then moved to the Plymouth area. Richard Glanvill, born 1735 at Ashburton, was the first Glanvill to be recorded in the registers of the Parish Church at Maker. His second marriage was to Sarah Couch at St. Andrews, Plymouth in 1758. Their children were baptised at Maker: Richard (1759)?, Elizabeth (1760), Edward (1762), Sarah (1764), Thomas (1765), Roger (1768, see below), Jane (1769), Ann Couch (1773), Maria (1774) and Susanna (born about 1776). My ancestor was the son, Roger Glanville, who was baptised at Maker on 28 January 1768 and died at Devonport on 27 May 1843 aged 76 years and 6 months. From his age at death he was born about November 1766. Roger married Dorothy Richards at the adjacent Parish of Rame in 1789 and their children were baptised at Rame: Mary (1794), Eliza (1797, see below), Maria (1801) and Caroline (1803). Roger and Dorothy Glanville probably lived on the coast at Cawsand. Roger was a mariner. Their grave is in the churchyard of Rame Church on a hill above Cawsand Bay in Plymouth Harbour. A photo of the grave may be seen on the "Photos of Rame" page. Dorothy married Roger Glanvill as Dorothy Richards. The marriage register records her as a spinster. Waymouth family records suggest that her family name was Tregenna. It is possible that the register was incorrect and she had been previously married as Dorothy Tregenna to Thomas Richards at Rame in 1784. A Dorothy Tregenna was baptised at Pelynt, Cornwall in 1760. My ancestor was the daughter, Eliza Glanville, who was born on 4 September 1797 and was baptised at Rame on 28 September 1797. Eliza married John Waymouth at Rame, Cornwall on 1 August 1820. They had 12 children: John Waymouth (1821), Mary (1823), Bernard (1824), Eliza (1826), William (1828), William (1829), Frederick (1831), Emma (1833), Ebenezer (1835), Silas (1837), Henry (1839) and Albert Waymouth (1843). The children were all baptised at Pembroke, Wales, except Albert who was baptised at Devonport. Eliza Waymouth (nee Glanville) died at Plymouth, Devon on 8 March 1875.
