SHORTER

James Shorter (c1828-1908) was born in Blunsdon, Witshire, England to James Shorter, a baptist minister, and Ann (nee Clack).

At the age of 25, he migrated to Australia aboard the "Ballarat", departing London  on  August 8/9, 1852  and arriving in Melbourne on November 4, 1852. He was listed as a "Wine Merchant"

James Shorter's first marriage to Mary Ann Elizabeth Beckett in 1856 produced two children:

• James Shorter who was born in Muckleford in 1857 and married Inez Maud Travers in 1881
• Annie Shorter who was born in Castlemaine in 1857 and married James Dudley Wells in 1878

By 1858 he was a publican running the Orville Hotel in Muckleford, relocating to the Supreme Court Hotel in Castlemaine in 1859.

James' second marriage in 1864 was to Jessie Bond (c1835-1907) (nee Don). At the time of the marriage he was a hotel keeper in Daylesford.

They had the following children:

• Edward Wells Shorter (1866-1870)
• Margaret Mary Shorter (1868-1945) who was born in Ballarat and married William Anderson Seed Bilsborrow in 1889
• Alfred Jones Shorter (1870- ) who married Ethel Louise Bertrand in 1894
• George David Shorter (1872-) who married Kitty Broomhall
• Ernest Thomas Shorter (1874-1936) who married Rosalie Ellen Ralph in 1903
• Albert Valentine Shorter (1877- ) who married Pamela Ethel Fitzgerald and later Dorothy Scott
