History of Glen Wold

Waiting for Copyright clearance
This picture taken from "Accrington as it Was" by Brian Ashton shows Glen Wold in the distance. Ashton estimates this picture was taken between 1897 and 1903. Victoria Hospital was opened in 1898, so by my reckoning this photo was taken earlier unless the hospital is obscured by the farmhouse, or more likely off the photo to the left.

Searching the 1901 census records (Accrington, emuneration district 37) there is no mention of any houses on Queens Road, just the words "Queens Road" between the entry for Victoria Cottage Hospital and No. 112 Whalley Road. From this I would conclude that Glen Wold was built after the 1901 census, and from the notes above, before 1903.

My mother claimed that Glen Wold was the first house to be built on Queens Road, and was built by her grandfather Alfred Greenwood.

I understand that Alfred also built the two houses next to Glen Wold towards Whalley Road.  Typical of houses of the era, the front facade is very elegant, round the back is a tiny yard with a couple of outbuildings, one presumably a washouse.

I like the style of the bay windows, typical Accrington. There is a large garage on the other side of the house.

Alfred Greenwood built Glen Wold (or at least had it built) about 1903, he and his family are living there in 1911 (according to the census) and from telephone records below it's reasonable to assume the Greenwoods lived there until 1930/31

From telephone records the occupancy of Glen Wold appears to be:-

1932 to 1936  W. A. Walsh

1958 to 1984  J. H. S. Wishart
No telephone books available 1961, 78, 80, 83 and post 1984
