  • The custom search page of the IGI has given me many leads for siblings of my ancestors or names for parents. The batch numbers foe Derbyshire parishes can be found here.

  • Many useful addresses for Derbyshire are at the county Derbyshire Genuki site.

  • Some of the areas close to Glossop are, or were, covered by the old county of Cheshire and useful information is available on the Cheshire pages too. Tameside library at Stalybridge has a family history section.

  • Although the surnameweb is predominantly American I have used the forum noticeboard for Hambletons with success.

  • For the branches of the family from Huddersfield I have used the Hudderfield and District Family History Society

  • The official site for the Derbyshire Family History Society is at www.dfhs.org.uk

Other people's sites I have found of use:

  • Marjorie Ward is building a collection of resources relating to NW Derbyshire on her site, at present it has information about the following places:- Chapel-en-le-Frith, Glossop, New Mills and Mellor.

  • Graham Hadfield has a lot of useful information about Glossop families

  • There is information about the Coplowdale and Little Hucklow areas on David Cooper's site.

  • Geoff Heath has written about life in Mellor earlier last century in "A Mellor boyhood"

  • Mark Whittaker's site, The Marple Website has information about both Marple and Mellor, including a section on local history.

  • Antony Lambert has transcibed the 1871 census for the nearby area of Hurst (near Ashton-u-Lyne, not Glossop)

  • Alex Mitchell has a site with information about Glossop, including a list of surname interests

  • Karen Fraser has a family history page with information about a number of Glossop families.
