Clifton Family Lusby Mill area

Three brothers traveled from their birthplace in Delaware to what would become Owen County, Kentucky before 1810.  They were the sons of Levin and Lydia Clifton from the Northwest Fork 100’s.  The first to arrive was Edward the eldest brother soon followed by Noah then youngest brother David.

Edmond Clifton  -Not much is know about his family. Born about 1780 in Sussex County, Delaware.  Edmond, also listed as Edward, died in 1829 in Grant County, Kentucky.  His property was located on East side of Eagle Creek and his brothers on the West in Owen County.  No marriage records have been located and he did not leave a will.  At this time we cannot find any record of his wife's name listed on land or other documents.  According to the census records she was still alive in 1820. Daniel is the only son of Edward that can be trace and he moved his family to Greenup County, Kentucky after his father dies.  Unless some of his family members returned to Owen County or Edward's unidentified son children lived in the County Edward would be the last of his family to live in the area.

Noah Clifton - Born about 1783 in Sussex County, Delaware.  He died in 1824 in Owen County, Kentucky. He inherits his father's property along with brother Levin as stated in their fathers will.  In 1797 he was listed as a minor and the court appointed a guardian to protect his rights.  In 1804 he is listed on the Sussex County tax records, he apparently abandons his land and moves to Kentucky and joins his brother Edward before 1808.

Noah married Charlotte Osborne, daughter of Richard  and Sarah, according to a deposition she gave to receive his 1812 pension they were married in her parents home in 1809, Scott County, Kentucky.  Charlotte was born before 1790 in Virginia/Kentucky, died on October 22, 1876 in Owen County, Kentucky.  They had 10 know children and all were mentioned in their father’s will.

Noah and Charlotte became active members of the Mussel Shoals Baptist Church.  In 1815  records show Noah was baptized in September that year.  Their names appear in the minuets of the church until his death in 1824.

Noah received a land grant for his service in the war of 1812 and his two of his sons, Milton and Wyatt move to Lee County, Iowa after their fathers death and took possession of the land.  Later they move their families to Lewis and Clark County, Missouri and from census records through 1860 these children do not return to Owen County.   Two other sons, Joab and Alfred, also moved from the Owen County area.  After Joab's death in 1846 his wife remarries and we cannot locate her or their children after 1860.  Alfred moves his family to Missouri to join his two brothers Milton and Wyatt after his first wife's death in the mid 1850's.

David Clifton - Born about 1780 in Sussex County, Delaware.  David died in May 1847 in Owen County, Kentucky.  He is presumed buried in the Clifton Cemetery. In a land sale he set aside 1/4 acre of land for the Clifton Family Cemetery. The first record on David was found in his father will in 1779 Delaware. He did not inherit any of his father's land, as he was one of the eldest of five brothers. He did receive according to the will a portion of his fathers "moveable estate" He apparently married in Delaware though no marriage records have been located.  We find him on the 1800 census records married with children. Based on tax records he was living in Pendleton County as early as July 8, 1811.  He may have arrived as early as 1810 as his son David Jr. birth record shows that he was born in Scott County, Kentucky on February 11, 1811.

David lived in the area of Owen County called Lusby Mill.  The land he purchased bordered on Eagle Creek near the Cobb Station Road.  Three creeks, Eagle, Hammond and Richland border this area. His neighbor's were the Hammon, Prather, Cobb, Osborne, Epperson, Wright, Keightley, Holbrook, Jones, and Wilson families.  He was appointed road commissioner and according to records served that post for several years.

David married Easter [Unknown]. Easter was born about 1780 in Delaware/Maryland. Died before October 15, 1849 in Lusby Mill, Owen County, Kentucky and was buried in 1849 in Clifton Cemetery. David and Easter were members of the Mussel Shoals Church according to the church records.

They had 13 know children and all, but one son David Jr, continued to live in the Owen County until their deaths.  John born abt 1800 married Nancy Richardson; Charles born abt 1805 married Polly Smith; Robert born abt 1806 married Nancy Smith; David Jr born February 11, 1811 married Frances Cobb, daughter of Daniel and Elizabeth Holbrook Cobb.  In the late 1850’s he moved his family to Randolph County, Missouri and founded the town of Clifton Hill; Edward born abt 1812 married Anna O;Banion; William H., also listed as Harrison born abt 1815 married 1st to Sarah Prather, daughter of Benjamin H. and Elizabeth Kightley Prather and 2nd to Anna McGibney, daughter of John and Mary McGibney; Michael C. born abt 1816 1st married his brother’s widow Nancy Smith and 2nd her younger sister Elizabeth Smith; Josiah born July 8, 1817 married 1st  Lusaney Wainscott and 2nd  Demaris Ann Prather.

The writer of this article is a descendant of Josiah and Demaris Prather Clifton, his second wife.  They were married January 10, 1850 and lived on his father’s old farmland, which he purchased back from his brothers and sisters after the death of his father in 1849.  He continued to farm the land until his death in 1880.  Ann, Demaris, raised their 11 children and before her death divided the land among her seven sons.   My great grand father, Pollard McKenney Clifton born abt 1859 was their 5th child.  He married Harriett E. Hammon August 29, 1881.  She is the daughter of Abram Madison and Mary Alexander Hammon.  Her great grand father was “old” John Hammon. Contact Barbara Guinn
