Elijah Greenberry Smith was born in Indiana, Dec. 29, 1830, and passed away at his late home, Sunday morning, Feb. 5th at 5 a. m. aged 80 years, 1 mo. and 6 days. He came to Iowa in 1848, first to Madison Co. then to Shelby Co. About 21 years ago he came with his family to Audubon Co. where he has resided ever since. In 1858 he was married to Nancy Casteele. Warren, Telford, Washington, Raymond Smith of Guthrie Co. Iowa, Mrs. Geo. Martin of Calamis, Iowa, Geo. Smith and Grover Smith of Hartley, Iowa. Mr. Smith was a loyal citizen, good neighbor, a kind father and husband. A sorrowing companion, five sons and two daughters, with an only brother in Madison Co., with many friends and acquaintances mourn their loss. Funeral from the home in Audubon, Iowa, at 10 a. m. Tuesday, conducted by J. H. Freedline, Pastor First M. E. church. A quartette from First M.E. church sang several beautiful selections. Interment Maple Grove
cemetery.

Notes:
Elijah and Nancy were living with Nancy's parents, Jesse and Sally Casteel in the 1860 census for Guthrie Co, Iowa. By the time of the 1870 census they have moved to Shelby County, Iowa and are living next door to their sister-in-law, Evaline Evans Casteel. Nancy's mother, Sarah Casteel is living with Evaline and her children. They remained in Shelby County through the 1880 census and moved to Leroy twp, Audubon County before the census for 1900 was taken. Elijah was always enumerated as a farmer. "Elijah spent many winters in and around Winterset, digging ginseng and other medicinal roots. He made his headquarters with the George Poffinbarger and Asa B. Smith families." from Family of Aquilla Smith by Marge Brokaw

Obituary: Mrs. Martha Archer, Liberty Tribune, Friday, 3-Nov-1899
Mrs. Martha Archer, wife of [Andrew] Archer, who had been lying at the point of death for two weeks, at her home east of Liberty, was relieved of her sufferings by death, Thursday evening, Oct. 26, 1899. The funeral services were held at the home on Friday afternoon, conducted by Rev. J. S. Cossairt, after which the remains were interred in the New cemetery. The sufferings of Mrs. Archer were intense, yet she bore them patiently. She realized that whe would not recover, and was resigned to go when her Lord called her. She was an earnest Christian woman, and a heartbroken husband and children mourn the loss of a devoted wife and mother. She leaves, besides these, several brothers and sisters and numerous friends. May He who "doeth all things well" bind up the broken hearts, and comfort the sorrowing ones in their hour of deepest grief.
