____________________________________________________________________________________April 30, 1827 received land in Carroll County District 12 Lot #60(202 1/2 acres) and Muscogee County District 22 Lot #155(202 1/2 acres). According to the records James was a soldier and living in Stafford's District of Wayne Co. Received two drawings because he was married and had underage children.
James was a prominent and influential citizen of Wayne County and was a successful farmer. His large estate was divided into twelve shares at his death, there being eleven surviving children and his wife. He died in 1854, a distribution signed by all the heirs was made November 24, 1854. His will, dated January 8, 1848, was probated September 15, 1854. The estate inventory amounted to $7603.68. James C. Drawdy and Malachi Harper were named executors of the will.
The 1850 census shows a Baptist Minister living with James and Mary Harper, Hugh P. Brannen who was 50 years old at the time.
James Harper, one of four known sons of Malachi Harper (1765-1815) was born in 1784 in old Cheraws District, SC (the area now known as Chesterfield, Darlington, and Marlboro Counties). He came to Wayne County soon after its settlement in 1805 and settled on Little Creek (land lot # 176), where he remained for the rest of his life. He was married in Wayne County,by William Stafford, to Mary Smith born in SC in 1790 daughter of Charles Smith (1763-1833) and his first wife, Vicey Ann Ellis (1765-1824).
James appears often in the early records of Wayne County on such things as the jury lists and as Road Commissioner on some of the early county roads. On January 6, 1824, he was appointed guardian of Richard, Sarah, Margaret, and Sampson Attman, orphans of Sampson Altman, Sr. a friend and neighbor. James took part in the State Land Lottery of 1827 and drew land lot # 155 in the 22nd district of Muscogee County(that district now being divided between present-day Talbot and Harris Counties). Then two years later, on May 12, 1829, he appointed an attorney to sell the 202 1/2 acres he had drawn "in the late land lottery". On July 1,1833, he was named as one of the two administrators on the estate of his father-in-law, Charles Smith, Sr. and he served in this capacity until the estate was finally settled in 1837.
James was a large and prosperous farmer, and his acreage on Little Creek was extensive. On December 8, 1827, he bought land lot # 175 (490 acres), adjoining his homeplace on the North, from William Stafford for $25.(Wayne County Deed Book Z Page 338.) He sold it three years later to Robert Stafford for twice that amount, but came to buy it back again before his death in the summer of 1853. An inventory was taken of his estate on September 17, 1853, and shows James to have owned 980 acres of land, 400 head of cattle, 70 head of swine, 50 head of sheep, 4 horses, and 9 slaves by the names of Hannah, Patsey, Mary, Linda, Suezin, Juley, Andres, Randal, and Richard. His estate was divided between the orphans of his deceased daughter, Rebecca (Harper) Manning. This division and settlement of the estate was made on December 9, 1854.
In March 1836 James received 50 acres of head right land per court of Wayne Co.(Wayne Co Deed Book BC & D Page 554.)
Mary (Smith) Harper continued to live at the old homeplace until her death sometime about 1861. In 1856, she deeded the place (land lot #176, on which Little Creek Church now stands) to her youngest son, William Harper, provided he should care for her for the rest of her natural life.(Wayne County Deed Book BC & D Page 574.) In 1862, following his mother's death, William sold most of the place to his brother, Joshua Harper, and the remainder to his brother-in-law, Elijah Tucker Knight.

mtDNA testing shows that Mary Ann Sykes had Haplogroup K which is found through Europe, and contains multiple closely related lineages indicating a recent population expansion. The origin of haplogroup K dates to approximately 16,000 years ago, and it has been suggested that individuals with this haplogroup took part in the pre-Neolithic expansion following the Last Glacial Maximum. Conjecture by JMC
Arthur Sikes may have been the father of Mary Ann Jane Sikes:
1) Arthur is living near Malachi Harper in 1820 Appling County
2) Arthur and Josiah seem to be related in some way in 1819 Tattnall County.
3) The 1840 census shows that Arthur had a daughter (probably Mary Jane) in his household in Appling County, GA. (now part of Wayne County) who was between 15 and 20 years of age. This is consistent with age of Mary Jane Sikes, second wife of Malachai Harper.
4) Mary Ann Jane Sikes named one of her children Charles Arthur Harper
5) Nancy is identified as the wife of Arthur and Mary Ann Jane names one of her daughters Nancy.
6) Arthur appears numerous times in the descendants of Mary Ann Jane SikesPossible parents of an Arthur Sikes from rootsweb are Daniel Sikes and Elizabeth Cawthon.
The search for Appling county records is difficult prior to 1856. Appling is a county that has lost some records to fire. Estate records do not exist for the period before 1856 and Arthur Sikes or Sykes is not listed in the general index of estate records for the century beginning in 1856.
Additional speculation by JMC
John V. Sikes and Jordon Sikes (b. 1849) also appear to be related to Mary Ann. This is pure speculation and is based upon:
1) their common very close locations in the same time period (often next door to children of Mary Ann Jane Sikes.
2) John V. names one of his children Mary Ann J. Sikes
3. from 1870 census, GA, Wayne 12-Aug-2870

Note from Albert Harper
I have traced Arthur Sikes to Appling County, GA through 1840. He does not show in the 1850 census. There is some evidence that he moved to Columbia County, Fl. after 1840 but I have not confirmed that. In the 1840 census he is listed as having one son between the ages of 5 and 10 in his household. This is probably Arthur, Jr. He shows up in the 1850 census. The 1840 census also shows that he had a daughter (probably Mary Jane) in his household in Appling County, GA. (now part of Wayne County) who was between 15 and 20 years of age. This is consistent with age of Mary Jane Sikes, second wife of Malachai Harper. This could be the father of Mary Ann Jane Sikes (b. 1822 in Tattnall Co., GA)

Have 2 sources for marriage date:
1) Alice Proctor to Eugene Autry on Dec 9, 1887 from Marriages of Marengo Co, Alabama
2) Family hand written record of all family date and place of birth, and marriage dates for Nathan E. Autrey and Mary A. Autrey and their childrenFollowing has right name and location but age is too old. However, Alice Awtrey is also in Troup with correct family members.
1920 census: GA, Troupe, La Grange, District 138, 14-Jan-1920
Awtrey, Nathan E., 68, Divorsed, working in cotton mill
William is assumed to be the father of Mary Alice since:
1. Noah Autrey and Solomon Proctor were neighbors in 1860 Marengo AL
2. Nathan was the son of Noah
3. Mary Alice Proctor is either the daughter of Solomon, or his son, William
4. 1870 records for Solomon Proctor in FL indicate he was not the father of Mary Alice.
Need to check Civil War records for William Proctor.1920 census: GA, Troup, La Grange, District 133, 5-Jan-1920
