Smokey found Levi M. Johns as husband of Martha Walker thru Confederate pensioner records. Census and CSA pension records proved out; plus Lucille's remembrance and pictures - this is Owen's grandfather.
Widow's application for CSA pension shows Levi enlisted 10 Apr 1861 in Capt Jenkins' Company, 1st Special Battalion, consolidated with Perry's Brigade, 10th Regiment (which means they suffered heavy loses somewhere along the way), and served until disbanded at Appomattox, Va 9 Apr 1865 when Gen. Lee surrendered. In short, he served virtually the entire length of the Civil War; very few survived that ordeal, especially on the Southern side. Levi died of consumption (tuberculosis) in Hamilton County on 5 Jul 1878.
1885 Fl census shows a Martha Johns (born 1850) as head of household with children Susie (16), Riley (18), Martin (14), and Robert (10). 3rd district, family no. 160. This Robert at 10 in 1885 correlates to 25 year old Robert shown in 1900 census as wife of Julia V. with infant Mattie C. This is Owen's grandmother, married in Madison Cty Fl at 15 to Levi Martin Johns - we have her picture now. Pension records show her birth as about 1843,(21 at M. but she looks more like 15 and may have fudged her age).
