Robert COLONEL WOODSON

Robert was a wealthy planter on a large estate. His name only appeared on court records as witness to documents, and his only public service was as a Surveyor of Highways in Henrico County in 1685. He was given the title of Colonel.

source: J. Allen Lovell
Robert was born at Fleur de Hundred in Prince George Co, VA, and lived in Henrico Co, VA in January, 1660 when his mother's inventory was recorded. By 1670, he and his brother, John, were settled at Curles, Henrico Co, VA, with over 1192 acres of land. By September, 1681, Robert and John patented 531 acres in the new Henrico Co on White Oak Swamp in Varina Parish. Together with Richard Ferris and Giles Carter, he patented another 178 acres.

Note: By 1691, Robert's son, John, was living at Curles and Robert was probably at White Oak Swamp. Note: Robert was appointed surveyor of the road in 1685 between New Kent Co line and Falling Creek. Note: There is no record found that indicates that Robert became a Quaker, but his sons did, and their names appeared in the Henrico Monthly Meeting records. He lived among a large settlement of Friends and associated with them early. Note: Records of Henrico Co were destroyed in 1677, so there are some blanks in this information. Note: Robert probably died soon after April 20, 1707, when he deeded 450 acres of White Oak Swamp to his two grandsons, William and Joseph Lewis, but no will or estate administration was found.

From "Adventurers of Purse and Person": Robert Woodson deposed, June 1680, that he was "46 years of age or thereabouts," and, June 1, 1696, that he was aged about 61. He married Elizabeth Ferris, daughter of Richard Ferris. On Oct 21, 1687 Robert Woodson, Richard Ferris and three others patented 1780 acres on White Oak Swamp in Varina Parish and the same day he, John Woodson, Sr., and two others patented 470 acres, also in Henrico Co. He held 1157 acres in Henrico Co., 1704, and died after Oct 1, 1707.

(per Historical Genealogy of the Woodsons and their Connections, compiled and published by Henry Morton Woodson of Memphis, Tennessee, 1915; page 23)

He was an original landed proprietor, 1687. SOURCE: Daughters of The American Colonists....Lineage Book Vol. 7 1946 Pages 270-278

THE GEORGIANS by Jane Austin - "From Historical Genealogy of the Woodsons and Their Connections, Page 23: 'Robert was born, according to his own deposition, in the year 1634, at Fleur de Hundred, on the south side of James river, in what is now Prince George County, Virginia...It was here that the family lived at the time of the massacre by the Indians on the 18th of April 1644, when Robert and his elder brother were saved by being thrust into a pit made for the purpose of keeping Potatoes; from which circumstance their descendants, for several Generations, bore the sobriquet 'Potato Hole Woodsons'."

Robert Woodson was known as Colonel Woodson. In "The Woodsons and Their Connections it is stated that if Robert Woodson was known as Colonel it was because he was given the title by the authority of the British Government.

Elizabeth FERRIS

She was decended from an ancient Norman family, Henri de Ferriers of Gascony. In American Ancestry, vol. VII, is the following statement; "The Ferris family was originallyfrom Leicestershire, England, descended from Henri de Ferriers, son of Gwalchelme de Ferriers, master of Horse to the Duke of Normandy." (Americans of Gentle Birth, vol I, p 358.)

From GenForum:

Married: ELIZABETH FERRIS Daughter of Richard Ferris, of SCurlesT, in Henrico county (VA) afterwards noted as the seat of the well-known Randolph family, and had issue five sons and four daughters. This same information is in the Genealogies of Virginia Families.

Elizabeth's father was Richard Ferris, b. 1596 in Devonshire, England. I THINK Richard's father was Nicholas FARRAR (note different spelling of name) who m. Mary Wodenorth, and that Nicholas's father was John Ferrar of Hertford, England, whose wife was named Mary.
I am researching Nicholas Ferrar=Mary Woodnoth (b. 1578) and they did have a Richard (b. 1596)and he had a Richard but I am having trouble finding any other information. I do not think this family was in Devonshire. Does anyone have ship that Richard went to VA on? Sounds like Elizabeth Ferris, d. of Richard, still needs further research before incorporating her into the Woodson family. Having said that, I have no idea where Richard does come from. In going over several records, nothing is coming to light.

according to Adelle Bartlett Harper's book "Family Lines" you are correct. She gives Nicholas Ferrar born 1544, died April 1620, married Mary Woodenworth, who died in 1634. John Farrar, of the town of Hertford, d. abt 1590, as his estate settlement was dated 13 Aug 1590. Maiden name of John's wife Mary is not listed. The Ferrar/Ferris name descended from Gwalchalme de Ferriers, Master of Horse to the Duke of Normandy (William the Conqueror) There is a 300 year skip in records before John, unfortunately.
She was born 1638 Prince George, VA. and die abt. 1707 Fleur de Hundred Prince George. Her father was Richard and Elizabeth Ferrar of London, England.Any information is helpful thank you.

from "Woodsons and Their Connections" by Henry M. Woodson 1915. It states "Robert Woodson b. 1634 at Fleur de Hundred, Prince George County Virginia, married Elizabeth Ferris, daughter of Richard Ferris or Curles. She was descended from an ancient Norman famil, Henride Ferriers of Gascony. In American ancestry volume is the following statement: 'The Ferris family was originally from Leiscestershire England, descended from Henri de Ferriers, son of Gwalchelme de Ferriers, Master of Horse to the Duke of Normandy.'"
Richard was born in England... his mother was Mary Woodenoth and his wife Sarah Hambleton..
Richard Ferris born 1596 in England / d. 1637. I have his wife's name as Sarah Hambleton, although that's uncertain.
Richard Ferris transported to Henrico Co., Va. 1636 by Robert Hollaman.
