Helen Whitaker Johnson
Various written documentation in the family of Richard Whitaker records Thomas Whitaker, his father, as "Hargis Whitaker". The great granddaughters Dessie & Cathlean Whitaker believe it is his nickname.

Carolyn Whitaker:
The Family Bible that was in the possession of Dessie & Cathlean Whitaker which was their grandfather's Richard Whitaker, record him as Tomas Whitaker born Jan 26, 1788 died Jan 16, 1869. Dessie & Cathlean knew he was called Hargis, but also aware his name recorded as Thomas. I have taken photographs of the family bible of Richard Madison Whitaker and these are now in possession of Helen Whitaker Johnson.

Personal interview with Dessie & Cathlean Whitaker by Helen Whitaker Johnson named the following children of Thomas Hargis Whitaker & Jemima Edgemon as "Wint"; William; Mary; Jemima; Joseph; "Rach" (Rachel); Jess; "Aunt Nan Blakely" (Nancy); Richard (their grandfather); "Liz" (Elizabeth); & Stephen (and they'd say they don't know where his name came from). They didn't believe John was a child of Thomas & Jemima, because they never knew of him.

Dessie & Cathlean also told Helen Whitaker Johnson that Joseph Whitaker was in Newport. They always referred to it as being just Newport, not as Cocke Co. They used to love to go shopping in Newport and made numerous trips there.

Caroline, Can not help you with the Hudson's. But noticed your last name of Whitaker. I have some cousins still in Greene county whose last names were Whitaker. Their Father was Albert Whitaker. Was born about 1910? That is all I know of him. His 2 daughters are not into Genealogy even though I have tried to get them into it. Phil M Bowser

80.) Nancy O'Neil is researching the line of Thomas Whitaker was born in Virginia ca. 1792. He married Jemima Edgeman in Washington County, Tennessee in 1813. They lived and died in Greene County, Tennessee. Believe Thomas' parents were Quakers. One of Thomas' sons was Joseph W. Whitaker. Joseph married Mary Eliza Hudson, the daughter of Rev. William B. Hudson, a Methodist minister.
