He was granted 100 acres in Camden Co in 1854.  Found in "Early Georgia Marriages, Maddox" and Judge Huxford's notes.  Also, 1870 GA census for Charlton Co.  Shown as a 45 year old farmer.  Neither he nor his wife could read or write.  Their land holdings were valued at $1000 as was their personal property in the 1870 census held 23 Jul 1870 (M593, roll 140, p.328, Greenville Co., SC Library).  He is on Hamilton Co. Florida tax rolls for 1875-1877 for 124 acres.  Shown as a 55 yr old farmer in Hamilton Co., FL 1880 census.  Same children.

Jeremiah H. JOHNS

All the children in this family were born in Georgia - an area that is now Brantley County. The 1880 census curiously shows that George Washington and Paul Columbus Johns were born in South Carolina.

Jeremiah H. Johns was Justice of the Peace of the 509th District from 1825 through 1830. He and his family lived in Camden Co., GA prior to 1825, settling on lands south of the Satilla River. This became Charleton Co. in 1854 and is now Brantley Co. At his death, his death, his estate included 350 cattle and four lots of land, nos.78,79,143, and 115 in the 2nd District of old Wayne and other property. He was an active member of the High Bluff Baptist Church where the record shows that he attended the 1820 meeting of the Piedmont Baptist Association.

He is listed in Charlton County in 1870 Census living with son, Paul Columbus Johns and his wife George Anna. He and his wife are buried in the Bashlott Cemetery in Brantley County, Georgia.

Jeremiah H. Johns was the son of Jeremiah and Levicy Johns, and the grandson of Jacob and Patience Johns.

The elder Jeremiah Johns was born in Beaufort County, South Carolina in 1768. He and Levicy had five sons: George (b.1787), Silas (b.1796), Jeremiah H., William (b.1800), and James J.(b.1810).

Jacob Johns was born in Charleston County, South Carolina before 1840. He and Patience had nine children: Isaac (b.1760), John T. (b.1765), Jeremiah (b.1768), Levi (b.1770), William W. (b.1773), Cornelish (b.1780), Mary (b.1782), Sarah (1784), and Elizabeth (b.1786). Jacob died in 1817 at the age of 77.

The 1880 Census shows that George Washington Johns and Paul Columbus Johns were born in SC.  This is curious because the family was definitely in Georgia from 1825 on.  If this is correct, they must have returned to SC for a time.  He was Justice of the Peace of the 509th District from 1825 through 1830.  He and his family lived in Camden Co., GA, settling on lands south of the Satilla River. This became Charleton Co. in 1854 and is now Brantley Co.  At his death, his estate included 350 cattle and four lots of land, nos.78,79,143, and 115 in the 2nd District of old Wayne and other property.  He was an active member of the High Bluff Baptist Churchwhere the record shows that he attended the 1820 meeting of the Piedmont Baptist Association.

He is in Charlton County in 1870 Census living with son, Paul Columbus Johns and his wife George Anna.

Jeremiah H. John's tombstone reads "Jere  H   Johns". Jere is for Jerry which is what he was called his whole life. Mary Ann is right there beside him.

Jere H. Johns tombstone is a few rows out in front of of the tombstones for George and Viney who are back at the fence. If you go to where George is buried and then turn and walk back a bit you will find an old soapstone headstone which has sunk down into the ground but is still standing. This is the tombstone for Jere.

George Washington JOHNS

Veteran of the Civil War, CSA 1862-1864

Included in the Deed of George W. Johns
"... aforming a square by and situate about mid way from North to South said land lot number One hundred and fourteen (114) and to the Westward of the center of said course numbered lots and about equal distance between the right of way of the rail-road recently constructed in Jesup, in said county of Wayne to Folkston in said County of Charlton and the house heretofore occupied by said first party (George W. Johns) upon said lot number one hundred and fourteen (114) and which two acres is known as the grave yard track, which has been use as a family and neighborhood burying ground and for no other purpose and not otherwise. And saving and expecting also a square acre of land in the North Portion of said land lot number one hundred and fourteen (114) about midway its North line and which acre of land is bounded on the North by a portion of said land lot number on hundred and thirteen (113) and upon which acre of land sits a church used by the Methodist Episcopal Church as a place of worship and which acre of land is excepted and reserved for the purpose of maintaining thereon a house of worship for the white Methodist Episcopal church, South and for no other purpose and not otherwise."

The Methodist Episcopal Church, South is now torn down. It was replaced by a modern church across Hwy 301 to the West and down South a bit. It sits on the other side of the RR Tracks at the Next Crossroads going South.

The old church stood unused for years until the community made a vote declaring it unsafe and tore it down. You will note that even today nothing as ever been built on that site. It sits empty except for if you go down the clay road beside where the old Methodist Episcopal Church once stood, you will come to an old Primitive Baptist Church still in good repair which has the cemetery Known as Bethlehem.

The other Family and Community Burial Ground mentioned in this deed is now where the new Bachlott Church of God sits right off Hwy 301 a bit.

This church met with some controversy a while back. They began trying to sell to family members burial spots. This old Deed was looked up and the Courts of the Land Upheld the writings of the Deed. The selling of lots was stopped at once.
