Copied from papers that were Great Grandma Rikers that she had given to her Graddaughter Maidee Farwell Frank, and Rita Frank Dawe, found among her things. This was written, and I am guessing 1925-1940. The lineage of Caufield's goes back to France in 1066. They were known as deCannville. We are decendents of Wm De Canville of Castle de Orlanda (parts of which are still standing in Normandy, France) His son Sir Richard came to England with Wm the Conqueror in 1066, and the family was quite prominent in England. Sir Richard being an admiral of the fleet of King Richard of England, which were crusadors in 1190.

The American branch came from Northamptonshire family, the first of whom was John Caufield who's will was dated July 2nd 1522, who's son John's was dated 1557. He had a son Richard, a minister who died 1595, who had a son Gregory, who died 1636. Father of Honorable Mathew Caufield who was the first to come to America. Mathew Caufield of Newark N.J. Samuel Caufield Born Oct.1st 1645 at New Haven, Conn., died Oct 1, 1690. Married Elizabeth Willouby, descendent of the first Lord Willoub, who came to England with Wm. the Conqueror. Jediah Caufield of Bedford, N.F. born 1681, married Lydia Keller. James Caufield, son of Jediah Caufield, of Bedford N.J. born 1730, died 1786, served in the Revolutionary War. Was in Colonel Drakes, Jacobs Swartout's Regiment. Married Sarah Hoyt. James Canfield who was the first to adopt the names Caufield or Canfield, born July 16, 1759, at Bedford N.J. Died Aug. 15, 1830. He married the Great Great Granddaughter of Rev. Edwards Bogardus, and Anete Janis. Bogardus of Trinity Church fame? The Bogardus and Brower families were the first dutch families in New Amsterdame. One of the descendents, Mathew Canfield or Caufield married in the Bogardus family.
