Daniel Fraser SULLIVAN Jr.

He and Jemina lived on a large plantation known as the Sullivan Palace.

Jemima CHAPMAN

Jemima Chapman married Daniel Francis (also known as Fraser) Sullivan on May 8, 1844. D.F. Sullivan was born on October 14, 1822, son of Daniel F. and Anna Sullivan. They resided on a large plantation, now known as Sullivan Place, between Hampton and Washington Parker about ten miles north of Ludowici.

When Daniel died on November 8, 1898 and Jemima on September 1, 1908, the Jones Creek Baptist church memorialized both. The committee that prepared the memorial for Jemima wrote: "We feel that it would be correct to say that a more dutiful wife and mother could not be found in the community. To know her and to be her friend meant a great deal to those with whom she mingled. She was kind, sympathetic, and ever ready to respond to the comfort of the sick and suffering. Often in conversation with her friends and relatives she would call attention to their Christian duties.  We desire to note the fact that her mother, Mrs. Mary Leigh Chapman, was one of the twenty-four faithful Christians who set in motion a great and noble institution for God, that of constituting the church at Jones Creek in the year 1810. Doubtless this influence for good will pass on from generation to generation as a blessing from the Great Head of the Church."

To Daniel and Jemima were born eleven children, nine of whom lived beyond maturity.

Sheldon Madison was born January 25, 1829, the youngest son of Francis John and Mary Leigh Chapman.  He married Charity Baggs, daughter of William and Charity Hope Baggs, and they had eight children, including William Francis, James Leigh, Sylvanus Landrum, John Lorenzo, and David Lester.  In 1868 he gave four acres on which the baptistery, the lower end of the old white and black cemeteries are located. He was memorialized by Jones Creek Church.

Written in the "Children of Pride":, p. 1254.
CHAPMAN, SHELDON M. (1829-1911), planter and stock-raiser, younger son of Francis John Chapman (1779-1852) and Mary Leigh (1789-1866), was born in Liberty County, Georgia, on January 25, 1829. In 1855 he married Charity Baggs (1832-1906) and settled on the Chapman place half a mile from Jones Creek and a mile and a half from the house of his elder brother John Chapman (1810-1895) on the Macon-Darien road. Both men were prosperous planters, stock-raisers, and lumbermen. During the Civil War Sheldon Chapman hired a substitute. John Chapman organized a vigilante group composed of men too old for military service and sought to defend communities in lower Liberty County and in McIntosh County from Yankee depredations; in 1864 he was captured and sent to New Jersey, where he spent the last year of the war in a prison camp. It was Sheldon Chapman who directed Mrs. Mary S. Mallard and her party to a ford in Jones Creek during their flight to Baker County in March 1865. He died on July 8, 1911, and was buried beside his wife in Jones Creek Baptist Churchyard.

By Francis Lloyd Chapman Jr.

Sheldon inherited the homeplace from his father and lived there until it burned.  He then built a home nearby which is currently lived in by his grand daughter, Hattie Chapman.  The house in situated on highway US 301, near the Jones Creek church.  The house was ransacked but left standing by Sherman's troops during the Civil War.  Like his father, he was postmaster of the Jones Creek post office for a time.

He was able to add considerably to the lands inherited from his father and left a sizable estate to his children.

Both he and Charity were active in the Jones Creek church.  Sheldon served as church clerk and deacon in the church.  He gave land to the church for use as a baptismal site.  Charity was active in the church and it's organizations.  In 1881 she helped organize the first Women's Missionary Union. They were each memorialized by the church following their deaths. They are buried in the old section of the cemetery and their graves are marked by a suitable marker.

I have several items which were his.  There is a soup bole which he used. It has been handed down to the eldest son and is now mine. His cattle branding iron is hanging on the fireplace of the log cabin on our farm.  I have a large bible which was his and in it was a certificate showing that he participated in a "Dollar Roll" campaign to raise one million dollars for support of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1876. Also, our Flatwoods land has been directly handed down from him.
