A story was passed down in the family, that Martin Manning had to flee his home state and family because he accidently killed a man while defending one of his sisters. We feel that because of this incident, he used different names and changed his birth date by a few years.
It is assumed that William Manning has died between 1870 and 1880 because he is not listed with his mother in the 1880 Census. He would have been 15 years old.
