Daniel SHUMATE

About 1803, Daniel Shumate and his brother Strother D. Shumate left VA., and went to SC by way of NC. He moved into Greenville Co., SC. after 1804. So far, a deed in his name has not been found. In 1805 and 1806, he paid taxes on 100 acres of the land originally granted to Daniel, his father. This land was adjoined the property of James Mc David.

In 1810, Daniel Shumate, his wife Jane, a son, Toliver and a daughter, Mary were in Abbeville, SC.

In 1816 they were in Monroe Co., AL, the second son, John G. was recorded for Daniel's family.

In the 1830 Census of Monroe Co., AL., Daniel Shumate and Jane are both listed as over 40 years of age.

The 1836 tax list of Kemper Co., MS., listed Daniel D. Shumate for the first time. Daniel, continued on the tax list until 1843-- the year he died.

The 1840, census of Kemper Co., MS.. list the family as usual, except for daughter, Mary who remained in AL and two sons, Eli Triplett and John. They are listed in Lauderdale Co. Clara Shumate Mc Williams

Jane MCDAVID

Jane Mc David Shumate, was a legatee in her father, James Mc David's will dated and proved in 1853, for the sum of $200. She is also lidted as paying taxes in Kemper Co. MS., in 1852: there are no more tax records until 1866, at which time, she does ot appear. She is not listed in the 1860 census of MS.

Edward KENNY

Edward Kenny's name appears in the bond of 1802 by which the heirs of Daniel Shumate, took control of their late father's estate and proceeded to divide it among themselves.

Nancy SHUMATE

Tabitha Dodson Shumate's will was dated December 10, 1802 and was proved October 22, 1904. It identifies Nancy as her daughter. History of the Shumate Family, by Robert S. Riley

Strother Dodson SHUMATE

Strother Shumate's name appears only for the 1 year of 1801, in the Personal Property Tax List of Fauquier Co., VA. Also, his name appears on the bond taken out in 1802, and he is mentioned as being a son in his mother's will in 1803. Apparently. after signing the bond in 1802, he relocated to SC. with his brother Daniel. However, his name does not appear in the 1810 Federal Census of SC, but it does appear in the 1820 census of Greenville Co. In this census, both he and his wife fall into the 26 to 44 age group (he would have been 39 yrs old that year), and with them were 8 children, 3 sons (1over 16, one over 10 and 1 under 10) and 5 daughters, (2 over 10, and 3 under 10).

Strother died between August 3, the date of his will, and December 8th 1934, the date it was probated. In his will he mentions his wife, Ann, his eldest son Lewis and his yuournest daughter Penelope. The balance of his estate is to be equally divided among his children. History of the Shumate Family, by Robert S. Riley

Mary Elizabeth HOFFMAN

Earliest death date based on birth date of her seventh, last, child. Latest death date based on marriage date of Daniel Shumate and his third wife. It is probable that she died about the time of the birth of her last child, Lydia in around 1772.

Marriage ceremony was performed at the Reformed Church
