William BAXTER

unmarried

Stephen Hunnicutt BAXTER

Stephen married Rebecca Carter, a daughter of George Carter, and from this marriage "sprang a large, robust, and numerous family of Baxters." They had six children: Harriet, first wife of Solomon Parker; John Jackson, husband of Temperance Moody; Jane, second wife of Solomon Parker; Stephen Honeycutt, husband of Caroline Poppell; Wiley Bates, husband of Eliza Copeland; and Henry H., husband of Nancy Dukes.

At the commencement of the War Between the States, Stephen H. Baxter (1823-1904) was commissioned a second lieutenant in the Georgia militia of the 16th district of Liberty County by Governor Joseph E. Brown on March 16, 1861, but there is no indication that he performed any active service. He was a member of Jones Creek Church for forty-seven years. When he passed away in his eighty-first year, he was one of the thirty-two members who were memorialized. This tribute stated that "although Brother Baxter was not a public spirited man, seldom ever going out to any church or public assembly of any kind, being possessed of a disposition peculiarly averse to being in company, yet he lived a harmless, inoffensive, and honest life in his dealings with his fellowman. We know of no charge ever having been brought against Brother Baxter and though remiss in his attendance upon church services, he was excused for many years prior to his death on account of his afflictions of his mind and body... He spoke of his willingness to die several times during his affliction and expressed a lively hope in the salvation of his soul." In fairness to him, it should be noted that while he was frequently absent from church conference, that during the War Between the States he was recorded present more than absent.
