General The Netherlands now have about 15 million inhabitants, compared to 2.6 million in 1830. At that time part of the newly established Kingdom of The Netherlands (1815, see Short history) became an independent new Kingdom separate from what is now Belgium. It is one of the highest populated countries in the world with almost 450 inhabitants per square km (725 per square mile). The main increase, 5 million, took place between 1945-1980. Over 47% of our population is living in the four western provinces; Noord- and Zuid-Holland, Utrecht and Zeeland.
