Present Municipalities
There are four villages on the former island of Goeree-Overflakkee since municipal reorganisation in 1966:
- Goedereede with the former villages: Ouddorp, Goedereede and Stellendam;
- Dirksland with the former villages: Melissant, Dirksland and Herkingen;
- Middelharnis with the former villages: Sommelsdijk, Middelharnis, Nieuwe Tonge and Stad aan het Haringvliet;
- Oost Flakkee with the former villages: Oude Tonge, den Bommel en
Ooltgensplaat.Municipalities before 1966
- Ouddorp included the former polders: Het Oudeland, Het West Nieuwland and part of Den Ouden Oostdijk;
- Goedereede encompassed: Goedereede Havenhoofd, Stellendam, Melissant, Dirksland,, Middelharnis, Nieuwe Tonge, Battenoord, Oude Tonge (possibly Langstraat), Stad aan het Haringvliet, Den Bommel, Ooltgensplaat, probably Achthuizen, and possibly Herkingen, Sommelsdijk, and part of Oostdijk. Langstraat, Achthuizen en ZuidZijde may have been separate villages or part of Stad a/h Haringvliet, Den Bommel, Oude Tonge or Ooltgensplaat.
Some translations
- Ouddorp = Old village
- Oude Oostdijk = Old dike in the east
- Oudeland = Old land
- Nieuwland = New land
- Havenhoofd = Jetty or pier
- Stellendam = Dam in the Stelle, the body of water where the islands
Goeree and Overflakke came together- Langstraat = Long street
- Achthuizen = Eight houses
- Ooltgensplaat = may refer to Oostplaat which is a shoal in the east; that village is on the most eastern part of the island.
