The
Maryborough Chronicle Indexing
Project
I am in the
process of indexing 'Names
mentioned' in
the
Maryborough
Chronicle newspaper. The Chronicle
covers central, coastal Queensland and has been published
since the 1860s. Click here
to see a map of coastal Queensland showing the area covered by the
Chronicle. The indexes will be divided onto two CDs. The CDs are
meant to be used in conjunction with the Maryborough Chronicle
Newspaper Micro-films, which have been digitalized and are online
at https://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/title/731
or the actual microfilms held by some State Libraries as well as the
Hervey Bay
Library. The CD will give you the date, and page number where
the
individual is mentioned in the newspaper. The story then
needs to
be read from the micro-films or from the relevant page on Trove
website. A lot of names are not indexed on Trove, but can be
found by using the CDs in conjuction with the Trove website!
Note: When using the Trove website, it is
recommended that you enter
the page number from the CD and visually look at the page, as the Trove
search engine, misses many
entries. When using Trove, it is possible to
print the information and if using a film reader, many modern day film
readers will
allow a photo-copy to be taken of the page/story.
The Maryborough
Chronicle Index (1885 -
1940) CD
January
1885 to December 1940 (a total of 55 years -
approximately 570,000
entries) and is now
available on one CD,
which
is available for
public purchase. This
CD
has been advertised in the 'Australian Family Tree Connections'
Magazine. The CD is an index of names only, and does not have
any information about any individual or story.
This
CD is an essential tool for doing genealogy in this
area of Queensland and can provide valuable information about people
not available anywhere else. It is meant to be used with the
micro-films of the newspaper. If you do
not have access to Maryborough
Chronicle micro-films and would like look-ups on
the films, or for more
information about purchasing the Maryborough Chronicle
Index CD, please email: [email protected].
The names indexed from
the newspapers are in the following categories: Adv=Advertisement
/ B=Birth / D=Death / Div=Divorce / Eng=Engagement / F=Funeral /
Inq=Inquiry / InMem=In Memoriam
/ M=Marriage /
Obit=Obituary /
P=Photo / RofH=Roll of Honour /
W=Writeup.
Pioneer
Edition CD - I am
now in the process of indexing the years
1860 - 1884. This database will be on a new CD called
the 'Pioneer Edition', covering 1860 - 1900, and will be available
separately. The 2 CDs will overlap on the dates 1885-1899 as many
people are interested in only early pre 1900 information.
There are other extras on the Pioneer Edition CD, like some
Ship
Passenger Lists of ships entering Maryborough and other items of
interest. This CD will be
available in mid 2015 (est).
*****
These
CD indexes
contain much more information than earlier indexes done by others (see
above
categories for my CD).
The earlier indexes (1900-1930) which were done on
microfiche, listed
only birth, death and marriage references for Maryborough
residents,
whereas this
CD index lists ALL NAMES mentioned of people in
the
Maryborough/Wide Bay area. These
CDs are
an excellent research tool for finding family in most of
SE regional Queensland during
the time frames covered.
Official
government Birth, Death
and Marriage records are
currently available as of 2014, for the following dates only: Births — 1829–1914; Marriages —
1829–1938; Deaths — 1829–1983. The
indexes will therefore, be particularly useful to people
seeking family information during the years not
available.
