William Benjamin Goyne was born about 1867. He was mar-ried October 14, 1886, wife's name Mary E. They were resi-dents of Nashville, Arkansas in 1890. They later removed to Gregg County, Texas.

William Benjamin Goyne "of Rusk County, Texas" bought 14 acres in the Mary Van Winkle League from P. L. Nolen and Sarah D. Nolen November 17, 1917 for $2,000, according to Gregg County Deed Book 40, page 351. They sold part of this land to E. R. Goyne "of Gregg County," unidentified, January 12, 1932, according to Gregg County Deed Book 126, page 77.

William Benjamin Goyne bought a 63-acre farm there Novem-ber 25, 1926 from Monroe Radford and Nancy Radford for $820, according to Gregg County Deed Book 53, page 419. This land he sold back to Nancy Redford June 20, 1932, ac-cording to Deed Book 129, page 486.

William Benjamin Goyne stated in an affidavit dated June 24, 1931 that he was "white, 63 years old," according to Gregg County Deed Book 97, page 73.

William Benjamin Goyne and Mary E. Goyne gave to J. E. Arnold a warranty deed November 14, 1939 to Lots 1&2, Block 2 in Ludwig Addition in Kilgore, Texas, according to Gregg County Deed Book 246, page 257

Mary E. Goyne died there August 20, 1945, according to Gregg County Deed Book 292, page 474. It is believed that he remar-ried shortly afterward, wife's name Willie.

William Benjamin Goyne died there September 27, 1956, ac-cording to BVS File 53310.

Mrs. Willie Goyne, "widow" gave a warranty deed to 14 acres for $3,000 to Loy Alvah Goyne, Arlie Vernon Goyne, Edward Roger Goyne, Mrs. Beatrice Goyne Williamson and Mrs. Essie Goyne Borders November 22, 1956, according to Gregg County, Texas Deed Book 495, page 175.

Arlie Vernon Goyne, son of William Benjamin Goyne and Mary E. Goyne, was born in 1890 in Nashville, Arkansas. He appear-ed in the 1912 city directory of Houston, Texas as a billing clerk for F. W. Heitmann Hardware Company, rooming at 410 Branch. He enlisted in the U. S. Army during World War I and served as a second lieutenant in the infantry in the Battle of St. Mihiel. He was discharged June 20, 1919, according to Gregg County, Texas Discharge Book 11, page 127.

He was married shortly after his discharge to Amie Eva Wise who was born in Brownsville, Texas in 1893. In 1921 he was an accountant living at 435 South Fredonia, Longview, Texas.

Arlie Vernon Goyne received a warranty deed from R. N. and Anna Belle Bullard to seven acres of land for $2,446.25 July 28, 1944, according to Gregg County Deed Book 282, page 463.

On November 6, 1947 Arlie Vernon Goyne entered into a part-nership agreement with Jack Groom concerning a "cleaning and pressing business in Longview known as Goyne Cleaners," ac-cording to Gregg County Deed Book 317, page 152.

On February 28, 1952 Arlie Vernon Goyne and E. R. Goyne of Gregg County, Loy Alvah Goyne of Sevier County, Arkan-sas and William Benjamin Goyne and his wife Willie Goyne of Gregg County gave a warranty deed to Beatrice Goyne Wil-liamson, a widow and Essie Borders, wife of J. V. Borders and Joe John Short a warranty deed to Lots 1&2, Block 2, Ludwig Place in Kilgore, according to Gregg County Deed Book 373, page 298.

Arlie Vernon Goyne and Amie Eva Wise, developers of Holly-wood Park Addition in Longview, gave to the public deed re-strictions pertaining to the addition July 9, 1952, according to Gregg County Deed Book 382, page 3490.

Arlie Vernon Goyne gave an affidavit to the public July 2, 1955 stating, "My wife, Amy E. Goyne died intestate in Longview May 30, 1955. We were the parents of two children, Kathleen Goyne, now married to Dr. John F. Halamicek of Wharton County, Texas and A. V. Goyne, Jr. now of East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana," according to Gregg County Deed Book 469, page 260

Arlie Vernon Goyne, age 68, of 306 South Center, Long-view was married to Mrs. Leah H. Womack Stanley, age 57 June 2, 1958, according to Gregg County, Texas Marriage Book 32, page 260. Arlie Vernon Goyne and Leah H. Womack Stanley Goyne gave a warranty deed to L. D. Miller to Lot 7, Block 1, Hollywood Park Addition November 1, 1960, according to Gregg County Deed Book 577, page 139.

Arlie Vernon Goyne, Kathleen Goyne Halamicek and Arlie Vernon Goyne, Jr. gave a warranty deed April 7, 1961 to Leah H. Womack Stanley Goyne to the Hollywood Park property, according to Gregg County Deed Book 586, page 336.

Leah H. Womack Stanley Goyne and her step-son Arlie Vernon Goyne, Jr. gave a warranty deed to Lot 1, Block 36 in Hamilton McNutt Addition September 22, 1972, according to Gregg County Deed Book 876, page 86.

Leah Womack Stanley Goyne was remarried to Earl Taylor Liv-erman July 23, 1975, according to Gregg County Marriage Book 45, page 431.

Kathleen Goyne, daughter of Arlie Vernon Goyne and Amie Eva Wise Goyne, was born about 1920. She was married about 1941 to Dr. John F. Halamicek. In 1955 they lived in Wharton Coun-ty, Texas.

Arlie Vernon Goyne, Jr, second child of Arlie Vernon Goyne and Amie Eva Wise Goyne, was born September 4, 1921 in Longview, according to Gregg County Probate Birth Book 5, page 91.

The city directory of Austin, Texas showed him as a student at the University of Texas in 1941 and 1942 editions. He enlisted in the U. S. Army June 30, 1942 showing his civilian occupation as a student.

He served as a clerk typist in the 100th Machine Records Unit [mobile] from January 12, 1945 until February 18, 1946 he served in the western Pacific area. He was discharged February 24, 1946, according to Gregg County Discharge Book 6, page 185.

He was married January 25, 1947 to Minetta Altgelt in Austin, according to Travis County Marriage Book 48, page 256. In 1947 he was listed as a junior at the University of Texas living at 308 East 11th Street, according to the city directory. Later in 1947 Arlie Vernon Goyne, Jr. and Minetta Altgelt Goyne lived in East Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He probably was graduated from Louisiana State University there.

In 1952, Arlie Vernon Goyne, Jr. was again listed as a student at the University of Texas by the Austin city directory. He and she both were listed as instructors at the University.

On July 22, 1957 they received a warranty deed to a lot in Briar-wood Addition, Arlington, Texas, according to Tarrant County, Texas Deed Book 3129, page 620. On May 2, 1961 Arlie Ver-non Goyne, Jr, and Minetta Altgelt "of Harris County, Texas" received a release from Prudential Insurance Company on the Briarwood Property in Arlington.

On February 14, 1964, Arlie Vernon Goyne, Jr. and Minetta Altgelt Goyne, the daughter of Agnes A. Altgelt who was the daughter of Franz Correth and Minnie Correth, received an agreement from Great Northern Railway, according to Comal County, Texas Deed Book 137, page 247. The agreement was concerned with an undivided 1/9 interest in 56.5 acres of land that Minetta Altgelt Goyne had received as an inheritance. They lived in Tarrant County at that time. Arlie Vernon Goyne, Jr. and Minetta Altgelt Goyne gave a deed to the State of Texas April 27, 1967 to 25 acres of land for $19,800, according to Comal County Deed Book 155, page 154. This was in com-pensation for the land that she had inherited from her mother.

In 1968 Minetta Altgelt Goyne was listed as a teacher at Texas Christian University, living in Arlington, according to the Ft. Worth city directory.

In 1973 Arlie Vernon Goyne, Jr. a professor at University Of Texas at Arlington and Minetta Altgelt Goyne, an assistant professor at UTA, lived at 1205 Sherwood Drive, Arlington, according to the Arlington city directory.

Children born to Arlie Vernon Goyne, Jr. and Minetta Altgelt Goyne are believed to include:

Roderick Altgelt Goyne, believed to be a son of Arlie Vernon Goyne, Jr. and Minetta Altgelt Goyne, was born about 1950. He was married to Linda Jo Atherton August 20, 1970, according to Tarrant County Marriage Book 155, page 396. Of Roderick Altgelt Goyne and Linda Jo Atherton Goyne nothing more in known.

Loy Alvah Goyne, son of William Benjamin Goyne and Mary E. Goyne, was born in Nashville, Arkansas in 1892. He was mar-ried about 1914 to Nannie Pearl Smitherman, who was born at Longview, Texas in 1893. One report states her place of birth as Kilgore, Texas.

Loy Alvah Goyne and Nannie Pearl Smitherman Goyne deeded 120 acres of land in Camp County, Texas to W. N. Morris No-vember 14, 1916, according to Camp County Deed Book 8, page 13. Later they deeded 120 acres to C. C. Houston October 17, 1917, according to Camp County Deed Book 7. page 136.

On December 8, 1917 Loy Alvah Goyne, a farmer, and Nannie Pearl Smitherman Goyne received a deed from R. F. Johnston to 206 acres lying six miles west of Longview for $2,700, accord-ing to Gregg County Deed Book 95, page 636. He lived at Kil-gore, Texas.

In 1920 he was listed as a carpenter at Kilgore. Loy Alvah Goyne received a deed to 98.8 acres of land located 20 miles east of Tyler November 3, 1919 from Guy T. Moore for $3,250, according to Smith County Deed Book 161, page 310.

Loy Alvah Goyne and Nannie Pearl Smitherman Goyne desig-nated their homestead in Gregg County, Texas January 26, 1923, according to Smith County Deed Book 164, page 448. They sold their Smith County property to C. H. Irvin December 15, 1924 for $1,790, according to Smith County Deed Book 174, page 395.

Loy Alvah Goyne and Nannie Pearl Smitherman Goyne joined A. B. Spear and Winnie Spear June 8, 1931 in giving a quit claim deed to J. R. Watson to five acres in the Mary Van Winkle Survey, according to Gregg County Deed Book 111, page 388.

Loy Alvah Goyne and Edward Roger Goyne were two of the five trustees of Kilgore Baptist Church June 18, 1931 when they deeded Lots 6&7,. Block 153 in Kilgore to T. W. Lee, according to Gregg County Deed Book 97, page 58.

Loy Alvah Goyne "of Dallas County, Texas" received a quit claim deed to 1.08 acre of land September 14, 1934 from Mrs. Annie Laird and Roy H. Laird, according to Gregg County Deed Book 169, page 398.

Nannie Pearl Smitherman Goyne, a widow of Cass County, Tex-as, joined Edward Roger Goyne and Arlie Vernon Goyne of Gregg County, William Houston Goyne of Cass County, Mrs. Beatrice Williamson of Cass County and Mrs. Essie Borders, a widow of Gregg County in giving a warranty deed to a 14-acre tract in the Mary Van Winkle Survey in Gregg County to Wil-liam G. Morton June 19, 1962, according to Gregg County Deed Book 611, page 39.

An infant born to Loy Alvah Goyne and Nannie Pearl Smither-man Goyne was born about 1915 and died before 1917.

James Leroy Goyne, second child of Loy Alvah Goyne and Nan-nie Pearl Smitherman Goyne, was born December 1, 1917 at Kilgore, according to Gregg County Birth Book 1, page 341.

William Houston Goyne, third child born to Loy Alvah Goyne and Nannie Pearl Smitherman Goyne, was born November 12, 1920 at Kilgore, according to Gregg County Birth Book 1, page 350. He was a resident of Cass County in 1962.

Edward Roger Goyne, son of son of William Benjamin Goyne and Mary E. Goyne, was born about 1894. He was married to Edna Merle Ward about 1920, according to Gregg County Mar-riage Book 77, page 26. She was born in Texas in 1907.

They gave an oil & gas lease to William Benjamin Goyne March 10, 1931. The lease covered two and one-half lots in the Mary Van Winkle Survey in the city of Kilgore, according to Gregg County Deed Book 77, page 26.

Edward Roger Goyne and Edna Merle Ward Goyne gave a war-ranty deed to 2 1/2 acres to the First Baptist Church of Kilgore January 5, 1932 for $5,000, according to Gregg County Deed Book 118, page 588. He was one of the trustees of the church.

They received a warranty deed from J. P. Williamson July 22, 1936 to Lots 8&9, Ludwig Addition, according to Gregg County Deed Book 198, page 506.5

Edward Roger Goyne died March 12, 1967 intestate. Edna Merle Ward Goyne received a conveyance of real estate shortly afterward from her children Edward Roger Goyne, Jr. and Joyce Ann Goyne Stanley and her husband James R. Stanley, according to Gregg County Deed Book 711, page 284.

Edward Roger Goyne, Jr, son of Edward Roger Goyne and Edna Merle Ward Goyne, was born about 1922, according Gregg County Probate Birth Book 21, page 456.

"Roger Goyne" gave an affidavit to the public August 15, 1949, according to Gregg County Deed Book 460, page 92. He received a cemetery deed from the City of Kilgore October 16, 1969, according to Deed Book 786, page 481.

Joyce Ann Goyne, daughter of Edward Roger Goyne and Edna Merle Ward Goyne, was born May 2, 1933, according to Gregg County birth records. She was married about 1954 to James R. Stanley.

Beatrice Goyne, daughter of William Benjamin Goyne and Mary E. Goyne, was born 1897. She was married about 1918 to J. P. Williamson. In 1962 she lived in Cass County.

Essie Goyne, daughter of William Benjamin Goyne and Mary E. Goyne, was born about 1900. He was married about 1920 to J. B. Borders. In 1962 she was described as a widow living in Gregg County.

George W. Goin, age 27 was married to Sarah West, age 27 on September 17, 1884, according to Book F, page 5. Children born to George W. Goin and Sarah West Goin are unknown.

J. J. Goin was born March 22, 1846. He died April 23, 1936, according to “Cemetery Records of Independence County, Arkansas” by Chalman E. Green and Mae Chinn Green. The inscription, “He fought with Lee” appears on his tombstone. His wife, S. J. Goin, born March 21, 1850, died July 29, 1921, was buried beside him.

D. L. Gowans, of Olyphant, Arkansas, age 20 was married to Myrtle Wycough age 24, of Salado, Arkansas December 28, 1941, according to Independence County Marriage Book B-1, page 204. Children born to D. L. Gowans and Myrtle Wycough Gowans are unknown.

L. D. Gowans was married to Hattie McIntosh on September 29, 1912, according to Independence County Marriage Book Q, page 324. Ed McIntosh was security for the li-cense for L. D. Gowans and Hattie McIntosh Gowans.

"Levy Gowan" was married to Susan M. Jones September 1, 1867, by James M. Gray, J. P, according to Independence County Marriage Book C, page 293.

Susan Gowen, age 22 was shown in 1870 in the household of W. F. Bullington. She was born in North Carolina, according to page 8 of the census of Black River Township.

The household of Levi Gowen and Susan M. Jones Gowen ap-peared in the 1880 census in adjoining Stone County, Arkansas in Wallace Township, Enumeration District 197, page 20 as:

Edward Gowen appeared in the 1870 census of Independence County, living alone, as household No. 216 in the Black River Township. He was recorded as "Edward Gowen, 23, farmer, born in Tennessee."

William Gowen, who may be the father of Edward Gowen above, was enumerated in Jefferson Township, page 13 of the Independence County census of 1870 as Household 96-96 as:

One copyist transcribed the entries as "Adeline A, 32, Narcissa I, 18 and Maggie, 4."

A. N. Gowens, age 22 was married to Mable Conditt, age 18 December 15, 1897, according to Independence County Marriage Book H, page 294. Of A. N. Gowens and Mable Conditt Gowens nothing more is known.

J. N. Gowens age, 21 was married to Bell York, age 18 Decem-ber 23, 1891, according to Independence County Marriage Book G, page 196. Children born to J. N. Gowens and Bell York Gowens are unknown.

Charles N. Goings, age 20 appeared in the 1870 census of Jackson County. He, "a white male," was living in the house-hold of Nathan Alder. Charles N. Goings, who was born in North Carolina, worked in a sawmill.

The family of Thomas D. Goings appeared in Barren Township, Jackson County in the census of 1870. His enumeration, render-ed on August 8, 1870 as Household No. 2-2, appeared as:

The family of Thomas D. Goings had moved from Kentucky between 1866 and February 1870.

The household of Francis M. Gowen was found in the 1850 census of Jackson County as Household 38-38:

It is believed that Francis M. Gowen had moved to Arkansas from Alabama between 1825 and 1830, that his first wife had died and that he had married a second wife, Cynthia Aiken.

Josephine Guynes was married August 10, 1871 to James C. Nelson in Jackson County, according to Mary Lou Nelson Cross, a descendant and a Foundation member of Sonora, California. They were recorded in the 1880 census of Beedeveville, Arkansas.

“I only recently discovered the names of my fath-er's grand-parents Josephine Guynes and James C. Nelson of Jackson County, Arkansas. I had heard that his father, Idel Joseph Nelson and siblings were raised by their mother. I found a listing in “Good-speed's 1890 Biography of Jackson County, Ar-kansas,” and listed under the Bleakley family was a tenant, Mrs. Nelson who's dying request was that the family raise her children - Idel, Willie and Eva.”

William H. Gowen, a spinner of Alabama, was enumerated as the head of Household 367-343 in the 1860 census of Jefferson County:

No members of the Gowen family or spelling variations ap-peared in the Lawrence County Marriage Book A, covering the period of 1821-1837.

William Goen appeared as the head of a household in the 1840 census of Lawrence County, according to "Index of 1840 Ar-kansas Census" by Bobbie Jones McLane.

"Allen Going" appeared as the head of the Household No. 15-15 in Duty Township on August 22, 1870 with post office at Pow-hattan, Arkansas enumerated as:

"William G. Going" was living at 7403 Pennsylvania Avenue, St. Louis, Missouri December 23, 1920 when he received an assignment of an oil and gas lease from Missouri-Texas Leasehold Company, according to McCullouch County, Texas Deed Book 62, page 142.

Pleasant L. Goins was born about 1818 in Illinois, possibly in Edwards County. Only one other "Pleasant Goings" was recorded in Illinois in 1818.

“Pleasant Goings” made a land payment December 18, 1818, ac-cording to "Shawneetown Land District Records, 1814-1820" by Lowell M. Volkel. He paid $16 on account toward the pur-chase of 160 acres in Edwards County. He paid an additional $64 on his land contract February 5, 1819. In that year Jefferson County, Illinois was created from land in Edwards County, and Pleasant Goings found himself in the new county. Pleasant Go-ings appeared in the 1820 census of Jefferson County, page 73, Moore Prairie township, as the head of a family composed "of three white males over 21" and three other members of the fam-ily.

John Goings is believed to have accompanied Pleasant Goings to Edwards County. "John Going" appeared an adjacent loca-tion in the 1820 census of Jefferson County, page 73, Moore Prairie township, as a "white male, over 21 with three other persons in his family.

William Goings is believed to have accompanied Pleasant Go-ings in settling in Edwards County. He made a land payment of $80 December 4, 1817 on 160 acres of land, according to "Shawneetown Land District Records, 1814-1820." He paid an additional $16 on the account October 7, 1818 and another $64 November 14, 1818.

"William Going, white male over 21," appeared in the 1820 census of Jefferson County, page 73, Moore Prairie township, as the head of a household which contained seven other mem-bers of the family.

Another family which may have accompanied Pleasant L. Goins from Illinois to Arkansas is that of Robert Gibson and his wife, Elvira Gibson. Elvira Gibson may have been a sister or kinsman to Pleasant L. Goins. Some of his orphaned children were taken into the Gibson home after Pleasant L. Goins and Mary M. Smith Goins died.

Research of the early probate, deed and court records of Jeffer-son County might reveal a relationship between these individ-uals and Pleasant L. Goins of Lawrence County.

Pleasant L. Goins was married about 1844 to Mary M. Smith, according to Shirley A. Goings-Lindsey, a descendant. She was a native of Tennessee. They were living in Arkansas about 1845.

Pleasant L. Goins, a stonemason was enumerated as the head of Household D-414, Strawberry township in the 1850 census of Lawrence County:

Elender Smith is regarded as a younger sister of Mary M. Smith Goins. Mary M. Smith Goins died about 1857 in Arkansas. Pleasant L. Goins died about 1858. It is unknown who reared their orphaned children.

Sarah Jane Goins, daughter of Pleasant L. Goins and Mary M. Goins, was born about 1845 in Arkansas. She appeared as a five-year-old in the 1850 census of Lawrence County. She was married about 1860 to John A. Warner, according to Shirley A. Goings-Lindsey.

Priscilla Emaria Goins, daughter of Pleasant L. Goins and Mary M. Goins, was born about 1846. She was recorded at age four in the 1850 census of Lawrence County. She was married about 1866 to Leaton Helms.

James Monroe Goings, son of Pleasant L. Goins and Mary M. Goins, was born in Arkansas September 18, 1848, according to the research of Carson Goings, a great-grandson who lived in Hardy Arkansas in 1995. Shirley Ann Yates Goings-Lind-sey shows his date of birth as April 2, 1848. He was married about 1874 to Rebecca Ann Huckabee who was born June 30, 1854. She died January 20, 1933, and he died August 16, 1934.

William R. Goings, son of James Monroe Goings and Rebecca Ann Huckabee Goings, was born April 2, 1848 in Arkansas. He was married about 1873 to Leoina Mann. He died January 30, 1934. Children born to William R. Goings and Leoina Mann Goings are unknown.

Betty Ann Goings, daughter of James Monroe Goings and Rebecca Ann Huckabee Goings, was born about 1878 in Arkansas and died in infancy.

Pernica Jane Goings, daughter of James Monroe Goings and Rebecca Ann Huckabee Goings, was born June 20, 1880, according to Shirley Ann Yates Goings-Lindsey. She was married about 1897 to John Gee.

Leaton Monroe Goings, son of James Monroe Goings and Re-becca Huckabee Goings, was born June 7, 1883 in Lawrence County. He was married about 1904 to Maudie Mae Higgin-botham, daughter of Riley Higginbotham. She died May 29, 1919. He was remarried to Maranda Belle Goff. He died June 1, 1966.

Children born to Leaton Monroe Goings and Maudie Mae Higginbotham Goings include:

James Lester Goings, son of Leaton Monroe Goings and Mau-die Mae Higginbotham Goings, was born July 10, 1905 at Poughkeepsie, Arkansas, according to Carson Goings, a son. He was married about 1925 to Flossie Jane Morgan. She was born January 8, 1906 at Evening Shade, Arkansas to James Emmet Morgan and J. Cordie Johnson Morgan. James Lester Goings died at Williford, Arkansas February 3, 1970, and Flossie Jane Morgan Goings died at Ash Flat, Arkansas March 30, 1992.

Lorena Maria Goings, daughter of James Lester Goings and Flossie Jane Morgan Goings, was born August 3, 1926 in Williford. She was married about 1946 to Chester L. Morgan.

James Lester Goings, Jr, son of James Lester Goings and Flossie Jane Morgan Goings, was born August 5, 1929 at Williford. He was married about 1952 to Ruby Roe. Children born to James Lester Goings, Jr. and Ruby Roe Goings are unknown.

James E. Goings, son of James Lester Goings and Flossie Jane Morgan Goings, was born was born March 14, 1930. He was married about 1953 to Jeanetta Louis Mann. Children born to James E. Goings and Jeanetta Louis Mann Goings are unknown.

Cecil Goings, son of James Lester Goings and Flossie Jane Morgan Goings, was born September 23, 1934 at Williford. He was married about 1957 to Eva Jo Hughes. Children born to Cecil Goings and Eva Jo Hughes Goings are unknown.

Carson Goings, son of James Lester Goings and Flossie Jane Morgan Goings, was born October 5, 1937 at Sitka, Arkansas. He was married June 29, 1957 at Poughkeepsie to Daphine Joann Brandon. In 1995 they lived at Hardy, Arkansas where he operated a real estate appraisal business. He, a member of Gowen Research Foundation, was active in the research of the Goings family history.

Imogene Goings, daughter of James Lester Goings and Flossie Jane Morgan Goings, was born about 1939 at Williford.

Don Ray Goins, son of James Lester Goings and Flossie Jane Morgan Goings, was born December 8, 1943 at Williford. He was married April 1, 1966 in San Diego, California to Linda Louis Cooper. Children born to Don Ray Goins and Linda Louis Cooper are unknown.

Bonnie Sue Goings, daughter of James Lester Goings and Flossie Jane Morgan Goings, was born October 2, 1950. She was married about 1971 to Thomas Woody.

Edna Goings, daughter of Leaton Monroe Goings and Maudie Mae Higginbottom Goings, was born about 1907.

Riley Earl Goings, twin son of Leaton Monroe Goings and Maudie Mae Higginbottom Goings, was born July 17, 1911 at Williford. He was married about 1934 to Eatha Widner. Children born to Riley Earl Goings and Eatha Widner Goings are unknown. "Natha Goings" died March 16, 1956 in Dallas County, according to BVS File 1235.

Maudie Pearl Goings, twin daughter of Leaton Monroe Goings and Maudie Mae Higginbottom Goings, was born July 17, 1911 at Williford. She was married about 1929 to Audie Howard in Lawrence County, Arkansas.

Hattie Marie Goings, daughter of Leaton Monroe Goings and Maudie Mae Higginbottom Goings, was born March 17, 1914 at Williford. She was married about 1933 to Curtis Moody.

Glenn Goings, son of Leaton Monroe Goings and Maudie Mae Higginbottom Goings, was born March 14, 1917 at Williford. He was married about 1946 to Delpha Morgan. Children born to Glenn Goings and Delpha Morgan Goings are unknown.

Octava Goings, daughter of James Monroe Goings and Rebecca Ann Huckabee Goings, was born November 8, 1885 at Williford, Arkansas. She was married about 1904 to Frank Thomas.

Harvey Lee Goings, son of James Monroe Goings and Rebecca Ann Huckabee Goings, was born December 8, 1892 at Williford. He was married about 1919 to Nora Rozeta Chandler. He died at Williford December 13, 1979. Children born to Harvey Lee Goings and Nora Rozeta Chandler Goings are unknown.

James John Harvey Goings, son of Pleasant L. Goins and Mary M. Smith Goins, was born in Arkansas February 18, 1850, according to Shirley A. Goings-Smith. He was mar-ried about 1874, wife's name Elizabeth.

William Zachariah Goings, son of Pleasant L. Goins and Mary M. Smith Goins, was born in Arkansas December 13, 1854.

William Zachariah Goings was arrested in July 1868 in Law-rence County at age 13 "for beating and bruising one Thomas J. Ball," according to the research of Carson Goings.

"Most of the Goings boys were big-boned and large for their age, and at 13, he would have appeared much older. I located Thomas J. Ball living with his family in the 1860 census of Lawrence County. This would make the two boys who were involved in the fight to have been aged 13 and 15 at that time. I found the court records where all charges against Zachariah Goings were dropped which specified that the county would pay all costs involved. The court evidently discovered that a 13-year-old boy had been arrested."

William Zachariah Goings was married about 1874 to Mrs. Anne Elizabeth Ballard Goings who was born August 6, 1857 in Alabama to James T. Ballard and Frances Elizabeth Betts Bal-lard, according to Shirley Ann Yates Goings-Lindsey. Anne Elizabeth Ballard had previously married George Goings, re-garded as a kinsman, March 13, 1872 in Lawrence County, Mis-sissippi.

William Zachariah Goings was enumerated as the head of a household in the 1880 census of Logan County, Arkansas:

In 1897, the family was living in Colorado County, Texas. From Columbus, Texas he wrote the Arkansas Land Com-mission in Little Rock requesting information on "donation land" in Arkansas and also available government and in Union County, Arkansas. In the later he stated, "I don't like the cus-toms in Texas, being born in Arkansas and wanting to return home."

William Zachariah Goings died August 6, 1899 while enroute to Arkansas from Texas in a wagon with his family. He and his son, James Monroe Goings, both died "of the fever" on the trip. The son died July 31, 1899.

"I located Anne Elizabeth Goings and her ten living children, her grandson, Arthur Freeman and her son-in-law, Will Jordan living in Hunt County, Texas in the 1900 census."

Arthur Freeman, son of George Washington Freeman and Mary Isabelle Goings Freeman, was born in September 1895 in Arkansas. He and his mother accompanied Wil-liam Zachariah Goings when he removed to Texas. He appeared at age four in the 1900 census of Hunt County, Texas, living in the household of his grandmother, Anne Elizabeth Ballard Goings. When he learned that Will Jordan was not his real father, he made trips back to Arkan-sas to get acquainted with his real rather. He stayed in the home of James Monroe Goings during these visits.

James Monroe Goings, son of William Zachariah Goings and Anne Elizabeth Ballard Goings, was born April 28, 1877 in Arkansas. He died at age 11, July 31, 1899 "of the fever" on a wagontrip from Texas to Arkansas.

William Stephen Goings, son of William Zachariah Goings and Anne Elizabeth Ballard Goings, was born July 2, 1879.

John Lafayette Goings, son of William Zachariah Goings and Anne Elizabeth Ballard Goings, was born April 24, 1881. He was married about 1919 to Willie Mae Fulce in Goldwaithe, Texas. Later he was remarried to Mary Griffen who was born December 23, 1892 in Tebbets, Missouri to Bascum Walker Griffin and Florence Loretta Irvine Griffin. They lived in Dal-las, Texas.

During World War II, John Lafayette Goings worked in a ship-yard in Orange, Texas. He returned to Dallas and his family about 1948 and died there in 1950.

Jewel Mae Goings, daughter of John Lafayette Goings and Willie Mae Fulce Goings, was born about September 22, 1901. at Royce City, Texas. She was married about 1919 to Okla Homer Willeford. She died April 16, 1986.

Maudie Mae Goings, daughter of John Lafayette Goings and Willie Mae Fulce Goings, was born April 16, 1905 at Ferris, Texas. She was married December 25, 1925 in Greenville, Texas to Earl Vice. She died about 1986 at Lone Oak, Texas.

James Walker Goings, son of John Lafayette Goings and Mary Griffin Goings, was born September 16, 1923 at Sache. He was married in Dallas County April 24, 1944 to Helen Louise Thompson. He died there August 19, 1993. Children born to James Walker Goings and Helen Louise Thompson Goings are unknown.

Mary Elizabeth Goings, daughter of John Lafayette Goings and Mary Griffin Goings, was born April 18, 1926 at Sache. She was married August 13, 1951 in Irving, Texas to Louis Donte Gallini. Later she was remarried to Leonard Hancock.

Edward Andrew Goings, son of John Lafayette Goings and Mary Griffin Goings, was born August 21, 1928 in El Paso, according to BVS File 61379. He was married about 1947 in Dallas County, Texas to Shirley Hope Burkes.

Edward Andrew Goings and Shirley Hope Burkes Goings were the parents of an infant born in Dallas County, Texas August 14, 1958, according to BVS File 134361.

Joseph Malvern Goings, son of John Lafayette Goings and Mary Griffin Goings, was born September 13, 1929 in El Paso. He was married March 5, 1969 in Dallas County to Marita Joe Bird. Later he was remarried to Marie Antoin-ette Cafarelli. Joseph Malvern Goings died of cancer in El Paso February 17, 2001.

William Zachariah Goings, son of John Lafayette Goings and Mary Griffin Goings, was born August 15, 1933 in El Paso, according to Texas Bureau of Vital Statistics File 61143. He was married February 28, 1953 in Dallas County to Shirley Ann Yates. She was born December 24, 1934 in Dallas Coun-ty to Roy L. Yates and Arietta Evelyn Aherton Yates.

William Zachariah Goings died there July 28, 1989. Shirley A. Yates Goings subsequently was remarried to Wayne Lindsey, son of Herbert Lindsey and Ruby Lee Lindsey, and in 1995 they lived in Dallas.

Edgar Adolphus Goings, son of William Zachariah Goings and Anne Elizabeth Ballard Goings, was born February 23, 1887 in Arkansas. He was married in El Paso, Texas about 1910, wife's name Cora. He died March the March 14, 1928.

Ida Lou Goings, daughter of William Zachariah Goings and Anne Elizabeth Ballard Goings, was born January 30, 1889 in Arkansas. She was married at Heath, Texas March 31, 1906 to Albert Carl Brooks. She died May 17, 1972 in Dallas County.

Maude Goings, daughter of William Zachariah Goings and Anne Elizabeth Ballard Goings, was born December 23, 1890.

Malvern Goings, son of William Zachariah Goings and Anne Elizabeth Ballard Goings, was born January 19, 1895 in Mal-vern, Arkansas. He was married in Dallas County to Lillie Longmore about 1919.

William Goins, age 61, born in North Carolina and his wife Annie Goins appeared in the 1850 census of Lawrence County, Washington township, Household D-217:

Elijah Going, regarded as the son of William Goins and Annie Goins, was born about 1843, probably in Lawrence County. "Elijah Going, farm laborer" was enumerated in the 1860 cen-sus of Monroe County, Arkansas, living with a Wyman family according to the research of Jaymie Frederick, Foundation member of Scobey, Montana.

He enlisted at Pocahontas, Arkansas, in Randolph County, ad-jacent to Lawrence County for one year in Company A, Sev-enth Arkansas Infantry Regiment. He reported to Camp Shav-er there and was placed under the command of Capt. Cam-eron.

On July 26, 1861 his company muster roll shows him, "Ab-sent, unfit ever since enlistment with few days exception." When his unit moved out, it was noted that Elijah Going as "Left at Pittman's Ferry, Arkansas. He had not yet rejoined his unit on October 31. Another notation showed that he remain-ed in the hospital at Pittman's Ferry "from September 25 to De-cember 25, 1861."

After getting off to such a shakey start, Elijah Going turned out to be one of the most decorated soldiers in the Confederate Army. He was present for duty thereafter, and on June 30, 1862, it was noted that he was "Entitled to bounty." Louise Goins Richardson, Goins researcher of Paragould, Arkansas turned up evidence to show the importance of this soldier to his regiment:

Pvt. Elijah Going, Company B, Sixth & Seventh Arkansas Infantry Regiment Consolidated was elected by his fellow infantrymen to receive the Confederate Medal of Honor and was considered by them as the outstanding infantryman of the consolidated regiment. The medal was awarded for valor displayed in the Battle of Chickamauga fought September 19-20, 1863 between the Federal Army of the Cumberland under Gen. Rosecrans and Bragg's Confederate Army. The Confederates routed the Union Army in a decisive victory.

His name was published in the Roll of Honor that was read at a formation of every Confederate regiment in the service, in the first dress parade following receipt of the list by the regi-ment. This award was made in compliance with an act of Congress which bestowed such medals. This award was pub-lished at Richmond, Virginia August 10, 1864, according to War Department Reports, Series I, Volume 30, Part 2.

Elijah Going was wounded in the Battle of Atlanta on July 21, 1864. He was recuperating from his wounds at Camp Wright in Macon, Georgia in November and December, 1864.

Annie M. Gowen was born in 1849 in Tennessee. She was married about 1866 to Daniel Vaughan in Madison County, according to Sharon Sublett in a message dated February 10, 2000.

Nancy Catherine Elizabeth Goynes was born March 21, 1850 in Mississippi of parents unknown, according to Shirley Diann Horn Bray, a great-granddaughter of Oklahoma City, Okla-homa.

“Nancy Katherine Elizabeth Goins” was a resident of Miller County, Arkansas when she was married, about 1867, hus-band’s name Farrell. She operated a boarding house in Bright Star, Arkansas during her widowhood. Later she was remar-ried to Dr. John Stephen Stuckey about 1875. They lived in Montague County, Texas. He died in 1899.

Nancy Catherine Elizabeth Goynes Farrell Stuckey died March 7, 1924 at Alex, Oklahoma in Grady County.

Robert Gowing who was born in 1916 was married May 30, 1942 to Mildred Gowing who was born in 1918, according to Miller County marriage records.

Betty Goyne, age 19 was married to Leo Ellison, Jr, age 20 July 18, 1951, according to Miller County Marriage Book 36, page 35.

Willie Marie Goynes, age 26 was married to Oscar N. Porter-field, age 29 August 23, 1951, according to Miller County Marriage Book 36, page 385.

Mitchell Napoleon Gowen, born 1858 and died 1946, and his wife, Lee McCoy Gowen, born 1862 and died 1946, were buried in Dogwood Cemetery in Mississippi County, according to "Blytheville, Arkansas Cemetery Inscriptions" by Ophelia R. Wade. Also listed in the volume is the grave of Genie Gowan, 1889-1942.

Elizabeth Goings, age 5 who was born in Arkansas died in March of 1850 "of worms" following a sickness of five days in Monroe County.

Henry Goings, John Goings, Mary Goings, Pleasant Going and William Goings were listed as heads of households in the 1830 census of Monroe County. John Goings and William H. Goings reappeared in the 1840 census of Monroe County.

Thomas Olie Goains was born in Phillips County in 1875. On June 21, 1913, at age 38, he was married to Ira Savana Lee Chaffin, the daughter of William Chaffin and Littie Jane Webb Chaffin. Ira Savana Lee Chaffin was born in Calhoun County, Alabama, August 12, 1890.

In 1917, 1918 and 1919 Thomas Olie Goains was farming at Meridian, Texas. In 1933 he was listed as laborer there. Apparently Thomas Olie Goains and Ira Savana Lee Goains were later divorced.

Thomas Olie Goains, at age 70 was married March 8, 1946 to Mattie Crawford, according to McLennan County Marriage Book 40, page 304. Of Thomas Olie Goains and Mattie Crawford Goains nothing more is known.

Ira Savana Lee Chaffin Goains died August 30, 1969, according to Bosque County, Texas Death Book 9, page 241. She was buried in Old Iredell Cemetery, Iredell, Texas, according to James Earl Goains, her son, the informant.

Thomas Olie Goains and Ira Savana Lee Goains were the parents of twins, name of one unknown, who were born January 2, 1917, according to Bosque County Birth Book 1, page 92.

William Vernon Goains, twin son of Thomas Olie Goains and Ira Savana Lee Goains, was born January 2, 1917 at Meridian, according to Bosque County Probate Birth Book 1, page 92. He was married to Altha Shivers July 14, 1934, according to Bosque County Marriage Book L, page 98. Apparently William Vernon Goains and Altha Shivers Goains were divorced shortly afterwards.

William Vernon Goains enlisted in the U. S. Army February 7, 1942 at Ft. Sam Houston, Texas from Meridian. He served as a military policeman in the 289th Infantry Battalion and showed a home address of Box 744, Hamilton, Texas. He was divorced when he entered the military. He was overseas from September 25, 1942 to October 4, 1945 and received four battle stars for participation in the battles of Rome-Arno, southern France, Rhineland and central Europe, He was discharged as a private first class October 14, 1945, according to Bosque County Discharge Book 3, page 287.

William Vernon Goains was married to Floy Vera Taylor May 27, 1942 in Hamilton County, Texas, according to Hamilton County Marriage Book 10, page 460. She was born in Texas in 1922.

They received a deed from E. W. Huffman November 17, 1945 to a lot in Frost Addition, Hamilton, for $2,100, according to Hamilton County Deed Book 134, page 247. They deeded this property to J. J. Wilson August 26, 1946, according to Hamilton County Deed Book 137, page 369. In 1949 he was a GI student, living in Bosque County. In 1955 he was bull dozer operator there.

On December 5, 1950 he received a warranty deed from M. G. Tucker to one acre of land in Bosque County, according to Bosque County Deed Book 163, page 602. On February 17, 1951 he sold the property to Edwin Nichols, according to Bosque County Deed Book 164, page 400. He received a warranty of deed from J. F. Warford August 29, 1953 to a lot in Meridian, according to Bosque County Deed Book 170, page 469. He sold the property to Howard Golden August 19, 1974, according to Bosque County Deed Book 228, page 525.

Jimmy William Goains, son of William Vernon Goains and Floy Vera Taylor Goains, was born January 12, 1949, according to Bosque County Birth Book 4A, page 529.

He was married to Peggy Nell Woolum October 12, 1968, according to Bosque County Marriage Book N pages 406 and 830. She was born in Texas in 1941. On December 24, 1968 Jimmy William Goains of "Los Angeles County, California" gave power of attorney to Peggy Nell Woolum Goains, according to Bosque County Deed Book 208, page 305. Julia M. Goains, notary public, Los Angeles County, California, took the acknowledgment.

In September 1969 Jimmy William Goains was in the U. S. Marine Corps. Apparently Jimmy William Goains and Peggy Nell Woolum Goains were divorced shortly afterwards. In April 1975 Jimmy William Goains was a laborer for Armour Food Company living at Meridian. His wife at that time was Janet Marie Eary Goains, who was born in Texas in 1956.

William Paul Goains, son of Jimmy William Goains and Peggy Nell Woolum Goains, was born in Meridian September 11, 1969, according to Bosque County Birth Book 11, page 416.

Bobby Gene Goains, son of Jimmy William Goains and Janet Marie Eary Goains, was born in Meridian, April 16, 1975, according to Bosque County Birth Book 13, page 486.

Jason Walter Goains, son of Vernon William Goains and Floy Vera Taylor Goains, was born November 19, 1955 in Meridian, according to Bosque County Birth Book 7, page 813.

Vera Goains, daughter of Thomas Olie Goains and Ira Savana Lee Goains, was born August 28, 1917 at Iredell. She died September 30, 1917 of entercolitis and was buried there.

She was married to Joe Cummings July 3, 1936, according to Bosque County marriage Book L, page 33. Apparently the marriage was annulled. Ophelia Nuleen Goains was married to Owen Malott March 22, 1941, according to Bosque County Marriage Book L, page 321.

Jason Edison Goains, son of Thomas Olie Goains and Ira Savana Lee Goains, was born August 20, 1925 at Iredell. Five children of the parents were still living, according to Bosque County Birth Book 4, page 110.

He enlisted in the U. S. Marine Corps April 24, 1943 and served in the Pacific area during World War II. He engaged in the Battle of Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands and the occupation of Japan. He was discharged April 11, 1946, according to Bosque County Discharge Book 3, page 41.

James Earl Goains, son of Thomas Olie Goains and Ira Savana Lee Goains, was born October 28, 1933, according to Bosque County Birth Book 5, page 215. Six children were still living at that time.

He was married January 29, 1955 to Margaret Louise Hixson, according to Bosque County Marriage Book M, page 321. In 1956 James Earl Goains was an employee of Convair, Ft. Worth, Texas. On July 30, 1964 Margaret Louis Hixson Goains received a warranty deed from Joe A. Lundberg to a lot in Meridian, according to Bosque County Deed Book 197, page 46. The property was known as the "Coffee Shop." On the following day she filled an election to manage her separate property, according to Bosque County Deed Book 197, page 48. On November 7, 1964 she sold the property to David Pierson and Willie Sue Pierson, according to Bosque County Deed Book 197, page 546.

James Earl Goains received a warranty deed from C. K. Ward, Jr. February 28, 1969 to a lot in Medidian, according to Bosque County Deed Book 208, page 642. He received a warranty deed from Paul B. In 1927 he was farming in Jones County, Texas. They were the parents of five children at the age of 21, four of the five children were living. In 1943 they lived at McGregor, Texas in McLen-nan County.

They sold the property February 24, 1975 to Iva L. Burns and Jewel Cox, according to Bosque County Deed Book 230, page 573.

Minnie Lee Goains, daughter of James Clabe Goains and Rosa Lee Bradley Goains, was born October 17, 1925 near Iredell, according to Bosque County Birth Book 4, page 128. She was married to Lester Vernon Guinn March 25, 1944, according to McLennan County Marriage Book 37, page 241.

Joe Clabe Goains, son of James Clabe Goains and Rosa Lee Bradley Goains, was born at Anson, Texas December 13, 1927, according to Jones County Birth Book 12, page 353.

He was a resident of McGregor in 1944. His mother filed a delayed birth certificate for him from McGregor July 12, 1944. He was married about 1946 to Margaret Elizabeth Wilcox who was born in Alabama in 1930. In 1948 they lived at 705 South 9th Street, Waco, Texas, where he was a sawman for Cameron Lumber Company. He continued in that capacity in 1957. Joe Clabe Goains was married to Shirley Mae Reed December 30, 1968, according to McLennan County Marriage Book 69, page 310.

Bobby Dwight Goains, son of Joe Clabe Goains and Margaret Elizabeth Wilcox Goains, was born December 6, 1948, according to Bosque County Birth Book 4A, page 479. His parents lived in Waco at that time.

Serena Ann Goains, daughter of Joe Clabe Goains and Margaret Elizabeth Wilcox Goains, was born June 26, 1957, according to Bosque County Birth Book 8, page 262. Her parents lived in Waco at that time.

Doris Geneva Goains, daughter of James Clabe Goains and Rosa Lee Bradley Goains, was born about 1928, according to Bosque County Birth Book C, page 112. She was married June 20, 1950 to Dock Harold Riddle, according to Bosque County Marriage Book M, page 118. Apparently this marriage ended in divorce. She was later remarried, husband's name Sloan. In 1972 Doris Geneva Goains Riddle Sloan lived in Waco. She was the mother of three children at that time.

Curtis Melvin Gowen was born about 1910, place and parents unknown, according to Dale Lynn Gowen, a great-grand-daughter of Grubbs, Arkansas in 1994. He was married about 1930 to Edna Francis Henson. In 1934 they lived in Poinsett County.

Curtis Melvin Gowen had a brother named Charley Gowen who in 1994 lived at Garner, Arkansas and a sister Faye Gowen Morris who also lived at Garner in 1994. Curtis Melvin Gowen served in the U. S. Navy during World War II.

Dale Clayton Gowen, son of Curtis Melvin Gowen and Edna Francis Henson Gowen, was born January 14, 1934 at Walden-burg, Arkansas. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy December 13, 1951 and was discharged January 13, 1955. He was married in 1955 to Mary Ann Looney who was born January 10, 1938 in Kansas City, Kansas.

Dale Clayton Gowen enlisted in the U.S. Air Force July 8, 1955. In 1964 he was stationed at Plattsburg Air Force Base, Platts-burg, New York. While in Hampton, Virginia for special train-ing, he was killed September 1, 1964 in an automobile accident as a passenger. He was a staff sergeant. Mary Ann Looney Gowen died in Little Rock, Arkansas June 3, 1988.

The elder Mr. Williams stated that he was born in 1888 in Stone County and that he was personally acquainted with Rhoda C. Gowens and David Gowens. Andrew "Andy" Gowens was a chum of Mr. Williams in their childhood. Andrew Gow-ens later married a Miss Conditt, whose sister married a brother of Mr. Williams.

John Gowens, son of John Gowens and Catherine Gowens, was born 1846 in Arkansas. He appeared in the 1860 census of Stone County as a 13-year-old. Later John Gowens removed to Oklahoma, living in the vicinity of Byers, Lexington and Pur-cell.

Her age should have been recorded as 32 instead of 22. She committed suicide during the 1930s, according to Rev. Hugh Gowens.

Siddie [Sida] Catherine “Cassie” Gowens, daughter of Newton Jasper Gowens and Mary Mahulda “Hulda” Kemp Jeffery Go-wens, was born in Arkansas February 6, 1873. She was mar-ried December 28, 1892 at age 18 to Daniel Mason Jeffery, Jr, 26, of Mt. Olive, Arkansas, according to Izard County, Ar-kansas marriage records. He was born November 10, 1866 and died in 1925. He was the son of Daniel Mason “Little Daniel” Jeffery, a Presbyterian minister and a farmer who was married May 2, 1844 to Nancy Lawrence. The senior Jeffery was born April 2, 1822 in Izard County and died April 1, 1888. He was buried in the Jeffery Family Cemetery by the White River in Izard County. Siddie Catherine “Cassie” Gow-ens Jeffery died November 10, 1928 and was buried in Mt. Olive Cemetery in Izard County.

Newton Owen Gowens, son of Newton Jasper Gowens was born at Mountain View in June 1878. He, “of Richwoods Township,” was married February 7, 1897 to Alberta "Bertie" Simpson, also 18, born August 10, 1879 to James H. Simpson and Mary Melvina Jane "Babe" Haley Simpson, according to Stone County marriage records.

They were enumerated as the head of Household No. 34in the 1900 census of Stone County, Richwoods Township:

They lived their entire lives at Mountain View. He died there about 1920. Alberta "Bertie" Simpson Gowens died there May 29, 1938.

Clarence E. Gowens, son of Owen Gowens and Alberta “Bertie” Simpson Gowens, was born at Mountain View in December 1897. He was married about 1920, wife's name Bertha. He died in 1958 and was buried at Mountain View. Bertha Gowens, who was born July 9, 1900, continued to live in Mountain View in June 1980.

Hugh Gowens, son of Clarence E. Gowens and Bertha Gow-ens, was born in Mountain View, about 1920. In 1972 he was living at 3222 Johnson, Ft. Smith, where he was the minister of Hackett Memorial Baptist Church and employed at Lloyd's Shoe Store. He mentioned that he had brothers in Norman, Oklahoma and Corpus Christi and Austin, Texas. Rev. Hugh Gowens continued to live in Ft. Smith in 1996. In a phone call December 8, 1996, he advised that Allie Gowens who was married to Charlie Thomas committed suicide during the 1930s.

Roger Gowens, son of Rev. Hugh Gowens, was born about 1947. In 1996 he continued in Ft. Smith and lived on Church-ill Street.

Ray M. Gowens, son of Clarence E. Gowens and Bertha Gow-ens, was born December 29, 1921, probably in Mountain View. About 1944 he was married, wife's name Inez. In 1966 Ray M. Gowens and Inez Gowens lived at Flour Bluff, Texas, near Corpus Christi, where he was manager of Feudd's Gro-cery. In 1969 they lived at 1022 Talmadge Street in Corpus Christi. In June 1980 they lived at 5809 Hugo, Corpus Christi.

Franklin Dwight Gowens, son of Ray M. Gowens and Inez Gowens, was born about 1945. He was married July 30, 1966 to Mary Jo Reede, according to Nueces County, Texas Mar-riage License No. 81156. He was in the U. S. Army at that time. In June 1980 Franklin Dwight Gowens, an employee of General Motors Corporation and Mary Jo Reede Gowens lived in Detroit, Michigan.

Paul Ray Gowens, son of Ray M. Gowens and Inez Gowens, was born about 1946. In 1966 he was a student living at 1721 South Fifth Street Waco, Texas. In 1968, according to the city directory, he was a schoolteacher living with his parents at 1022 Talmadge. He was married March 29, 1969 to Patsy Darlene Stinson, according to Nueces County Marriage Li-cense No. 88729. Paul Ray Gowens and Patsy Darlene Stin-son Gowens were students at West Texas State University in 1972 and 1973 and lived at 2500 8th Avenue, Canyon, Texas. In June 1980 Paul Ray Gowens, a professor at East Texas State University, and Patsy Darlene Stinson Gowens, lived at Commerce, Texas.

Ralph Edward Gowens, son of Ray M. Gowens and Inez Gowens, was born about 1947. He was married to Genevieve Lynn Reed at Waco December 18, 1968, according to McLen-nan County, Texas Marriage Book 69, page 278. In 1969 Ralph Edward Gowens and Genevieve Lynn Reed Gowens lived at 209 Knickerbocker Street South, Corpus Christi. In June 1980 he was a school superintendent in Corpus Christi.

Jimmy Wayne Gowens, son of Ray M. Gowens and Inez Gowens, was born about 1950. In the 1969 city directory of Corpus Christi he was shown as a student living in the house-hold of his parents. He was married March 27, 1971 to Cheryl Diane Horton, according to Nueces County Marriage License 3707.

Jimmy Wayne Gowens, a student, and Cheryl Diane Horton Gowens lived at 1600 South 5th Street in Waco, according to the 1972 city directory. In June 1980 Jimmy Wayne Gowens and Cheryl Diane Horton Gowens lived in Wichita, Kansas.

Kenneth Gowens, son of Ray M. Gowens and Inez Gowens, was born about 1964. In June 1980 he was a student living with his parents in Corpus Christi.

James Gowens, son of Clarence E. Gowens and Bertha Gow-ens, was born about 1924. In 1972 he was living in Austin, Texas.

Chester A. Gowens, son of Clarence E. Gowens and Bertha Gowens, was born about 1925. In 1972 he was living at 15642 Virginia Lane in Chicago, Illinois.

Paul Gowens, son of Owen Gowens and Bertie Simpson Gow-ens was born at Mountain View, about 1902. When contacted by telephone in 1972 he was a retired invalid, living at Moun-tain View.

Georgia Gowens, daughter of Owen Gowens and Alberta “Bertie” Simpson Gowens, was born at Mountain View about 1905. About 1925 she was married, husband's name Ramsey. In 1972 Georgia Gowens Ramsey continued to live in Moun-tain View. She died there in 1988.

Wanda Lee Ramsey, daughter of Georgia Owens Ramsey, was born about 1930. She was married about 1949, husband's name Stewart. In 1990 she continued to live at Mountain View.

Ruby Gowens, daughter of Owen Gowens and Alberta “Ber-tie” Simpson Gowens, was born at Mountain View about 1908. She married about 1927 to J. L. Craig. In 1972 Ruby Gowens Craig continued to live at Mountain View.

Chester Gowens, son of Owen Gowens and Alberta “Bertie” Simpson Gowens, was born at Mountain View, about 1910. He was a professional baseball player and tried out for the St. Louis Cardinals. He was married about 1939, wife's name Hattie. Chester Gowens died in St. Louis about 1966 after a 25-year residence there.

Hattie Gowens, "widow of Chester" lived at 1180 Hawkstone Lane, according to the 1966 city directory of St. Louis.

Jack C. Gowens, son of Chester Gowens and Hattie Gowens was born about 1941, probably at St. Louis. He was married about 1963, wife's name Judith F. Gowens. Jack C. Gowens, a car salesman, and Judith F. Gowens, lived with his mother at 1180 Hawkstone Lane, according to the 1966 city directory of St. Louis. He continued there in 1990.

In February 1972 Mrs. Gena Gowin and Mrs. John C. Gowin were residents of Russellville, Arkansas.

In February 1972 Jack Gowin, a resident of Rt. 4, Hector, Ar-kansas, was listed in the telephone directory.

Bert Goin who was born October 25, 1877 was registered for the World War I draft in Perry County.

Martha Gowen who was born about 1882 was married June 20, 1900 in Piggott County to George Washington Smith, according to Steve Wood, a great-great-grandson in a message dated August 30, 1999. On the marriage license they both gave their residence as "Pope County, Illinois." Steve Wood reports that Martha Gowen had a brother named "Willey Gowen" and an unknown sister.

J. C. Goin, age 45 was married by R. J. Coleman, minister of the gospel, December 24, 1876 to Jennie Maxwell, age 18, according to Prairie County Marriage Book B, page 136. H. O. Williams served as bondsman. Children born to J. C. Goin and Jennie Maxwell Goin are unknown.

S. C. Goin, "an old citizen of Prairie County," died in May 1885, according to the May 14, 1885 edition of the "Ar-kansas Gazette."

John James Goins and Katherine Ann Nelson Goins were res-idents of Des Arc, Arkansas in 1890 when a daughter was born:

Birdie Mae Goins, daughter of John James Goins and Kather-ine Ann Nelson Goins, was born February 28, 1890 in Des Arc, according to her Social Security Application submitted in 1939. At that time, she was employed by Works Progress Ad-ministration Sewing Project.

She was orphaned at a young age when her father fell from a train in Ft. Smith, Arkansas and was killed, according to a granddaughter, Donna Harwood of Maryville, Tennessee.

She was married to Sam Houston “Hugh” Sorrels about 1908. He was born in Texas in 1886 to John H. Sorrels, town marshall of Wheatley, Arkansas and his wife, Clara H. Sorrels.

They made their home in McCrory, Arkansas during the 1940s. She moved to Virginia in the 1950s to live with her daughters. She died in 1976 in Memphis, Tennessee.

Lillian Inez Sorrels, daughter of Sam Houston “Hugh” Sorrels and Birdie Mae Goins Sorrels, was born about 1913. She was married in 1936 to Charles Alfred Eason. He was born December 13, 1899 in Greenway, Arkansas to Charles S. Eason and Minnie Rowe Williams Eason.

Charles Alfred Eason worked and retired from Illinois Central Railroad in Memphis Tennessee. He formerly worked as a te-legrapher for the railroad in Salt Lake City, where his daughter Barbara was born. His mother also worked for the railroad and was buried in Salt Lake City, Utah in the Mitchell Ceme-tery. He died January 1, 1977 in Memphis.

W. H. Goins was married September 5, 1872 by R. W. Ross, Deacon, M.E.C.S. to R. A. Jordan, according to Prairie County Marriage Book D, page 351. Children born to W. H. Goins and R. A. Jordan Goins are unknown.

J. T. Goin, 30, "of Little Rock" was married March 20, 1888 to Miss Estella Turner, 15, "of Potts Station" by W. P. Lazenby, justice of the peace, according to Pope County, Arkansas Mar-riage Book F, page 324.

James Goin was listed as residing at 409 West 5^th in the 1893-94 Little Rock city directory.

John M. Goin and his wife Anne C. Goin were residents of Little Rock in 1943. On June 25, 1952 they received a warranty deed from J. H. Springfield to a residence at 4703 Fossil Drive, Hal-tom City, Texas according to Tarrant County Deed Book 2446, page 49. Consideration was $8,250. John M. Goin was listed in the Ft. Worth city directory as a maintenance man for American Airlines in 1952. He continued at that employment and at that address through 1962, the last entry concerning him. Anne C. Goin continued to live at 4703 Fossil Drive, Haltom City in May 1972.

Larry B. Goin, son of John M. Goin and Anne C. Goin, was born at Little Rock January 6, 1943. In 1961 he appeared in the Ft. Worth city directory as a student living at 4703 Fossil Drive, Haltom City. In 1962 he was listed as a stockman at Buddy's Super Market continuing at the same address.

He enlisted in the U. S. Navy September 17, 1962 at Dallas, Texas, giving his home address as 4703 Fossil Drive, and his civilian occupation as fire extinguisher service. He was stationed at U. S. Naval Air Station, Jacksonville, Florida with Patrol Squadron 18. He was discharged September 16, 1968 and returned to his home at Haltom City, a single man, according to Tarrant County, Texas Discharge Book 122, page 451.

Apparently he was married about 1970. Larry B. Goin and Norma Goin received a warranty deed from Buckner Glenn Homes February 17, 1971 to a residence in Richland Hills, Texas, according to Tarrant County Deed Book 4997, page 940. Larry B. Goin and Norma Goin gave a warranty deed to Tommy Counts September 14, 1971, according to Tarrant County Deed Book 5111, page 757.

Cheryl Ann Goin, daughter of John M. Goin and Anne C. Goin, was born about 1945. She was pronounced a "person of unsound mind" May 3, 1973 by Tarrant County Probate Court. Her mother was appointed her guardian, according to Probate File A-15357.

Jerry A. Goin, son of John M. Goin and Anne C. Goin, was born about 1946. He appeared at 4703 Fossil Drive in 1961, according to the city directory. In 1962 he was in the U. S. Navy and continued to show the same address.

John A Goin, son of John M. Goin and Anne C. Goin, was born about 1948. He appeared as a detail clerk for Montgomery Wards, living at 4703 Fossil Drive, according to the 1967 city directory of Ft. Worth.

Walter H. Goin, born December 20, 1900, died January 21, 1935, was buried in Martin Cemetery in Pulaski County.

Annette Carlock McCullough Gowen, widow of Hubert Mc-Cullough and Phillip Gowen, and a resident of Reyno, Arkan-sas died June 28, 2002, according to her obituary published in the “Pocahontas Star-Herald” of July 4, 2002:

“Annette Gowen, 74, of Reyno, died Friday, June 28, 2002, at Haven House in Atlanta, Ga. She was born Feb. 6, 1928 in Kewanee, Mo., a daughter of the late Floyd and Wilma [Skaggs] Carlock. She was an office worker at the Pocahontas City Clerk's office, and was a member of the Old Reyno Free Will Baptist Church. Two husbands, Hubert McCullough and Phillip Gow-en, preceded her in death. Survivors include two sons, Kevin McCullough of Searcy and Jess McCullough of Ackworth, Georgia; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Tuesday at Old Reyno Free Will Baptist Church with Leo Martin officiating. Burial followed in Nelson Cemetery near Reyno, under direction of McNabb Funeral Home. Pallbearers were Stanley and Chad Price, Danny, Jon-athan and Jim Edington and Royce Burkheart.”

Levi Gowen was indicted on a criminal charge in St. Francis County in 1837, according to the March 9, 1837 edition of the "Helena Constitutional Journal" and the March 14, 1837 and August 15, 1837 editions of "The Arkansas Gazette."

Mary Goins was married September 19, 1880 at Greenwood, Arkansas to William T. Bates who was born August 16, 1857 to Robert E. Bates and Sarah Catherine Smith Bates. William T. Bates died December 27, 1882 in Sebastian County and was buried in Valley View Cemetery.

Wanda Jean Wilson Goins, 59, wife of Howard Goins of Pan-ama, Arkansas died Thursday, July 19, 2001, in Ft Smith, Ar-kansas, according to her obituary in the newspaper of Poteau, Oklahoma.

She was born June 22, 1942, in Cameron, Arkansas. She worked at Panama School Cafeteria for 12 years and as home health provider for 13 years. Survivors include her husband Howard of the home; a daughter, Pam Goins Shelton of Mon-roe; Arkansas; son Clayton Goins of Beggs; Arkansas; five granddaughters, Randa and Annie Brooke Shelton, Kaylin, Darcy and Jordan Goins. She was buried in Fairview Ceme-tery in Panama.

Charlie Ethel Gowin was married December 13, 1903 to Clara Estes, probably in Sebastian County, according to Joan Reid, of Houston, Texas. Clara Estes was born February 27, 1883 in Lee County, Mississippi to Festus Marion Legrant Estes and Mary Elizabeth Timms Estes. Clara Estes Gowin died January 20, 1943.

James H. Gowing lived at 89 Nelson Nail Homes, Ft. Smith, Arkansas, according to the 1971 telephone directory.

Rev. Tommy O. James, 76, of the Gum Springs community, died Thursday, December 23, 1999, in Ft. Smith. He was born August 17, 1923 in Gum Springs, to Tom E. James and Sarah Gertrude Goins James. He was married to Callie Eunice Ris-ley July 8, 1944 in Sallisaw, according to the December 30, 1999 issue of the “Sebastian County Times.”

Herrell Lee Goins, single, was discharged from the U. S. Marine Corps June 8, 1955. He was born June 3, 1935 at Horatio, Ar-kansas and enlisted June 9, 1952.

William L. Goins, age 20, of Horatio, was married to Laura Johnson, age 20, also of Horatio, February 10, 1929. J. L. Goins, was security.

R. A. Goun, "female, 50, born in North Carolina died in September 1860 "of pneumonia, sick 12 days," according to the 1860 Arkansas mortality schedule.

Angeline Gowen, age 17, was married to James Kesterson, age 21, on January 20, 1866, according to Sevier County Marriage Book 3, page 31.

B. F. Gowen, age 52, of Gillham, Arkansas, was married to Mrs. Artie Mae Rich, age 42, on July 26, 1921 in Sevier County. Zercie Lewis, age 42, appeared as security. Of B. F. Gowen and Artie Mae Rich Gowen nothing more is known.

The obituary of Daniel F. Gowen was published in the January 17, 1952 edition of the “Mena Star:”

“Funeral services for Daniel F. Gowen, 82-year-old resident of Gillham, Arkansas were held Saturday aft-ernoon at 2 o'clock at the Overturf Church, south of Grannis, Arkansas with Rev. Ben Allen officiating. Interment was in the Overturf Cemetery under the di-rection of the Geyer Funeral Home.

Pallbearers were Charlie Kesterson, Bud Butler, Buck Morris, Sydney Cowan, Howard Reid and Robert Burns.

Mr.Gowen was born April 22,1869 at Lockesburg, Ar-kansas where he grew to manhood. He later moved to Gillham where he lived the remainder of his life, serv-ing the profession of a farmer. He was a member of the Methodist Church. He is survived by one sister, Mrs. Margaret Gowen Stone of Gillham and one niece, Mrs. H. E. Bounds of Broken Bow, Oklahoma.

Jane Gowen., lived in Sevier County in 1857, 1858 and 1859. She made a warranty deed to 80 acres for $80 to James Wilson March 30, 1857, according to Sevier County Deed Book I-6, page 101. On February 26, 1858 she made a warranty deed to John W. McHearse, and on March 19, 1859 she executed another legal instrument to him, according to Sevier County Deed Book K-7, page 228. It is suggested that she accompanied John W. McHearse in moving from Alabama to Arkansas about 1852.

James Franklin Gowen, regarded as a son of Jane Gowen, was born about 1841 in Alabama, according to the research of Marily Morris, a descendant of Gillham, Arkansas.

"James Gowan," believed to be James Franklin Gowen, appeared in the household of “J. W. McHorse” [John W. McHearse?], a Baptist clergyman born in Tennessee, in the 1860 census of Sevier County, Jefferson township, with postoffice at Paraclifta, Arkansas:

John W. McHearse had real estate transactions in 1858 and in 1859 with Jane Gowen, suggested as the widowed mother of James Franklin Gowen. “Rev. J. W. McHarse” served as the officiating minister as the marriage of James M. Gowen and Dianah Wilson September 21, 1856, according to nearby Clark County Marriage Book C, page 418.

James Franklin Gowen enlisted October 18, 1861 in Company B, Nineteenth Arkansas Infantry Regiment. Later he served in the Twenty-fourth Arkansas Infantry Regiment in Sevier County, according to his Confederate pension application. He was injured in the arm, according to “Descendants of Matthew Rivers” by John Harvey Rivers.

"James F. Gowen, age 24," was married to Sarah E. Rivers, age 19, on July 7, 1865 in Sevier County, according to Marriage Book 3, page 39. She was born December 27, 1846 in Morgan County, Alabama, the 11^th child of Matthew Riley Rivers who was born in 1786 in South Carolina and Mary Prince Rivers who was born in South Carolina in 1805.

The household of James F. Gowen was enumerated in the 1880 census Madison Township, Enumeration District 14, in adjoining Howard County, Arkansas as:

James Franklin Gowen died at Dierks, Arkansas in Howard County December 24, 1899, according to Morris research. He was buried in Fellowship Cemetery in Howard County. Sarah E. Rivers Gowen died December 29, 1918 at Center Point and was buried beside her husband.

Four sons and 10 daughters were born to James Franklin Gowen and Sarah E. Rivers Gowen. Included were:

John Martin Gowen, son of James Franklin Gowen and Sarah E. Rivers Gowen, was born in 1866 in Sevier County. He died at Dierks, Arkansas, in Howard County in 1943.

George Matthew Gowen, son of James Franklin Gowen and Sarah E. Rivers Gowen, was born in 1868 in Sevier County. He died about 1954.

Mary Matilda Gowen, daughter of James Franklin Gowen and Sarah E. Rivers Gowen, was born in 1869.

Rachel Jean Gowen, daughter of James Franklin Gowen and Sarah E. Rivers Gowen, was born in 1871. She died in 1902.

Nancy Charlotta Gowen, daughter of James Franklin Gowen and Sarah E. Rivers Gowen, was born in 1873. She died in 1966.

Lucinda Alice Gowen, twin daughter of James Franklin Gowen and Sarah E. Rivers Gowen, was born in 1876. She died in 1951.

Betsy Ann Gowen, twin daughter of James Franklin Gowen and Sarah E. Rivers Gowen, was born in 1876.

Argent [Oregon] Gowen, daughter of James Franklin Gowen and Sarah E. Rivers Gowen, was born in 1877. She died in 1894 at age 17.

Margaret Gowen, daughter of James Franklin Gowen and Sarah E. Rivers Gowen, was born in 1878. She died in 1952.

James Anderson Gowen, son of James Franklin Gowen and Sarah E. Rivers Gowen, was born in 1881. He was married about 1904, probably in Howard County. He died in 1910.

Archie Preston Gowen, only son of James Gowen, was born April 27, 1907, probably in Howard County. He was married to Charlsie Dorsey at Haworth, Oklahoma March 13, 1939. Archie Preston Gowen continued to live at Haworth in November 1972.

Donald Charles Gowen, son of Archie Preston Gowen and Charlsie Dorsey Gowen, was born about 1941, probably at Haworth. He was married about 1963, wife's name Ozella. Donald Charles Gowen, an employee of Western Electric Company at Tulsa and Ozella Gowen lived at 11512 East 17th Place, according to the city directory. They continued there in 1972.

Susie Al Gowen, daughter of James Franklin Gowen and Sarah E. Rivers Gowen, was born in 1884. She died in 1974.

Carrie Jeanett Gowen, daughter of James Franklin Gowen and Sarah E. Rivers Gowen, was born in 1887. She died in 1955.

Ipsy Dewannie Gowen, daughter of James Franklin Gowen and Sarah E. Rivers Gowen, was born in 1889. She died in 1919

Levi Franklin Gowen, son of James Franklin Gowen and Sarah E. Rivers Gowen, was born in 1890. He died in 1978.

John Gowen, born in 1846 in Arkansas, and James Gowen, born in 1841 in Tennessee, were living at De Queen, Arkansas. They were enumerated in the 1860 census of Sevier County. John Gowen, age 14, born in Tennessee, was living in the household of Joseph Allen, No. 705-705 according to the 1860 census of Sevier County.

L. A. Goyne of Lockesburg, Arkansas wrote his will February 8, 1957, according to Sevier County Probate File No. 611/143. All of his property was left to Nannie Pearl Goyne, his wife. His only son, William Houston Goyne was mentioned in the probate procedings September 16, 1960.

Edgar Adolphus Going, who was born in Sharp County in 1887, and Precious Lora McClendon Going who was born in Crawford County, AR in 1891, were living at 2509 Ramsy Street, Dallas, Texas in 1923.

Dorris Ann Goings, third child of Edgar Adolphus Going and Precious Lora McClendon Goin, was born in Dallas, September 14, 1923, according to Dallas County Birth Book 37. Mrs E. A. Gamache supplied the information for the birth certificate October 6, 1942.

J. E. Going was the head of household No. 20-20 which appeared July 5, 1870 in the census of Sharp County in Big Creek Township:

“Commissioner's Sale of Land: Notice is hereby given that by virtue of the authority and directions contained in a decree of the circuit court of Sharp County, in equity, tendered at its October term, 1884, in an action therein pending in which Evaline Goings, Eliza J. Goings, Em-marilla Dusock, Augustus Crowder, a minor by his next friends, Eliza Go-ings, Charles Goings, Alonzo Goings, Whitfield Goings, Thomas J. Goings and James Goings were petitioners ex parte which said order and decree was revived at the April term, 1885, the undersigned as special commissioner in chancery, appointed for that purpose will on Monday, June 15th, 1885, at the front door of the house in which the courts of Sharp County are held . . . .offer for sale to the highest bidder, at public venue, the southwest quarter of the south-east quarter of section 25, the northeast quarter of the north-east quarter, and the northwest quarter of the northeast quart-er of sec-tion 36, all in township 17 north of the baseline, in range 4 west . . . . containing one hundred and twenty acres.

Hyram Goyings was the head of household No. 99-99 which appeared in Sharp County in 1870 census in Lebanon Township:

Henry Marion Goins was born in 1906 of parents unknown. He died at age 90 January 2, 1997, according to the January 4 edition of the "Arkansas Gazette" of Little Rock. He was survived by sons, Alvie Goins and Odell Goins, both of Mountain View, Arkansas; stepson Jimmy Murphy, Bono, Arkansas; stepdaughters Dorothy Wicker of Walnut Ridge, Arkansas and Joann Henson of Paragould, Arkansas and a sister Shirley Goins Eastwood of Madisonville, Kentucky. He was buried in Flatwood Cemetery.

Thomas Jefferson Gowen was a resident of Boston Mountain [later named Mountain View] about 1878.

William Oscar Gowen, son of Thomas Jefferson Gowen, was born about 1878 probably at Mountain View. He was married about 1900 to Lula Palmer at Bowling Green, Arkansas. William Oscar Gowen and Lula Palmer Gowen lived for many years at Atoka, Oklahoma where he was engaged in farming. In 1913 they lived at Iowa Park, Texas.

On August 15, 1933 William Oscar Gowen and Lula Palmer Gowen were the recipients of a quit claim deed to an Atoka city lot from their daughter, Bertha Gowen Biggs, et al.

In 1934 William Oscar Gowen and Lula Palmer Gowen were listed in the city directory of Wichita Falls, Texas living at 2808 Baltimore. He was shown as a farmer. From 1936 until 1946 they appeared in the directory living at 2906 Holliday. He was shown as a caretaker for Haven Park during that period. In 1945 she appeared as an employee of Roye Laundry. Afterwards the couple returned to Atoka where William Oscar Gowen died about 1947 at the age 69.

Among the eleven children born to William Oscar Gowen and Lula Palmer Gowen were:

Mattie Gowen, daughter of William Oscar Gowen and Lula Palmer Gowen, was born about 1901, place unknown. She was married about 1922, husband's name Winberry. She died in 1974 at Clayton, Oklahoma.

Floyd Winberry, only known child of Mattie Gowen Winberry, was born about 1924. In 1975 he lived at Clayton, Oklahoma.

Bertha Gowen, daughter of William Oscar Gowen and Lula Palmer Gowen, was born about 1904. She was married about 1923, husband's name Biggs. In 1933 Bertha Gowen Biggs lived at Atoka. In 1975 she lived at 419 North Hickory, Mc Allister, Oklahoma.

Lena Gowen, daughter of William Oscar Gowen and Lula Palmer Gowen, was born about 1906. She was married about 1925, husband's name Sheridan. In 1975 Lena Gowen Sheridan lived at 421 South Central, Okmulgee, Oklahoma.

Robert Britain Gowen, son of William Oscar Gowen and Lula Palmer Gowen, was born in Oklahoma, possibly Atoka, October 9, 1908. He was married, wife's name Mamie M, about 1930, probably in Clay County, Texas. In 1931 the couple lived at Byers, Texas. In 1934 Robert Britain Gowen and Mamie Gowen and three children lived at 630 Pillsbury Court, Orange, Texas. According to the city directory he was an employee of Consolidated Steel. In January 1961 Robert Britain Gowen lived at Gridley, California. He died in 1974.

Bobbie James Gowen, son of Robert Britain Gowen and Mamie M. Gowen, was born at Byers, June 11, 1931, according to an interview with him January 9, 1961. He was married August 8, 1950 to Wandeen Ladd of Oklahoma. When contacted in 1961 Bobbie James Gowen advised that he was to be sent to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia as a missionary by the Church of Christ of Buena Park, California. Following his tenure in Africa he returned to the United States and settled in Oregon near the residence of his uncle, Alvis Paul "Red" Gowen of Lebanon, Oregon. In January 1973 he continued to live in Oregon, according to Robbie Sikes of Westview Boys Home, Hollis, Oklahoma.

Bonnie Gowen, daughter of Robert Britain Gowen and Mamie M. Gowen, was born about 1934, probably at Byers. About 1954 she was married to Stanley Lease. In January 1961 Stanley they lived at Sunnyvale, California.

Buddy Max Gowen, son of Robert Britain Gowen and Mamie M. Gowen, was born October 12, 1940. Nothing more is known of this individual.

Mary Gale Gowen, daughter of Robert Britain Gowen and Mamie M. Gowen, was born in 1950. In January 1961 she was living with her parents in Gridley, California.

William Oscar Gowen, Jr, son of William Oscar Gowen and Lula Palmer Gowen, was born about 1918, probably in Atoka, Oklahoma. In 1936 he was shown living in the residence of his parent at 2906 Holliday, Wichita Falls, according to the city directory. He was listed a driver for Wichita Nursery.

William Oscar Gowen, Jr. was married about 1940, wife's name Thelma, probably at Wichita Falls. In 1940 Thelma Gowen was shown as a telephone operator for Southwestern Bell Telephone company, living at 2309 Holliday, according to the Wichita Falls city directory. In 1941 edition William Oscar Gowen, Jr. was shown as a stock clerk for N. O. Nelson Company, and Thelma Gowen continued as a telephone operator. Their residence was at 2210 Harvard Avenue.

It is believed that he went into military service about 1942. Thelma Gowen continued to live in Wichita Falls in 1943 and 1944. During that time she was employed by Woolworth Company as a stockwoman and lived at 601 Austin Street.

Later William Oscar Gowen, Jr. was remarried to Virginia Mary Dempsey, who was born in Wisconsin in 1924. In 1956 and 1957 they lived at 1621 Elizabeth Drive, Garland, Texas. In January 1961 they lived in Little Rock, Arkansas. In 1957 Wil-liam Oscar Gowen, Jr. and Virginia Mary Dempsey Gowen again lived in Garland, at 1501 Lexington Drive, where he was foreman for R. B. McKee Company.

Children born to William Oscar Gowen, Jr. and Virginia Mary Dempsey Gowen include:

Constance Virginia Gowen, daughter of William Oscar Gowen, Jr. and Virginia Mary Dempsey Gowen, was born March 1, 1956, in Garland, according to Dallas County Birth Book 62, page 338.

Cynthia Lynn Gowen, daughter of William Oscar Gowen, Jr. and Virginia Mary Dempsey Gowen, was born July 10, 1957 in Garland, according to Dallas County Birth Book 63, page 568.

Alvis Paul "Red" Gowen, son of William Oscar Gowen and Lula Palmer Gowen, was born in 1913 at Iowa Park, Texas. He was married to Wanda Lee Parsley about 1935. She was born at Newport, Arkansas. In 1940 Alvis Paul "Red" Gowen and his wife Wanda Lee Parsley Gowen, appeared at 2906 Holliday, Wichita Falls, the address of his parents, according to the city directory. In 1941 he was listed in the directory as a driver for Home Lumber & Building Company.

They were the parents of a child born in Wichita County No-vem-ber 23, 1941, according to BVS File 11591. In 1947 he was an oilfield worker living in Archer City, Texas. In January 1961 they were living in Lebanon, Oregon. In 1975 it is be-lieved that he owned a ranch at Archer City, however he contin-ued to live in Oregon.

A daughter, name unknown, was born to Alvis Paul "Red" Gowen and Anna Lee Parsley Gowen, November 23, 1941 at Wichita Falls, Texas.

Judy Marie Gowen, fourth child of Alvis Paul "Red" Gowen and Wanda Lee Parsley Gowen was born February 17, 1947, according to Wichita County Birth Certificate 24240. Her parents were residents of Archer City at that time.

Phoebe Watson Gowin, a widow, age 24, was married to John W. Carter, age 32, December 23, 1860, according to Union County Marriage Book B, page 252. Both were residents of Union County at that time. He was her second husband.

No members of the Gowen family [or spelling variations] were shown in Washington County in the 1830 nor the 1850 census of that county.

O. C. Hankins and Sadie Goins Hankins were residents of Lincoln, Arkansas in 1914 when a son was born. Children born to them include:

Glen R. Hankins, son of O. C. Hankins and Sadie Goins Hankins, was born in Lincoln August 24, 1912. He was married December 12, 1937 in Littlefield, Texas. He died October 13, 2000 at Ardmore, Oklahoma, according to his obituary in the “Marietta Monitor:”

Services for Glen R. Hankins, 86, of Marietta, were held at 2 p.m., Monday, October 16, at Marietta's First Baptist Church with the Rev. Tommy Higle officiating.

Mr. Hankins was born August 24, 1914, in Lincoln, Arkansas, the son of O.C. and Sadie Goins Hankins. He died Friday, Oc-tober 13, 2000, in Mercy Memorial Health Center, Ardmore.

A resident of Love County since 1962, Mr. Hankins was a rancher. He and Eddie Jewel Gibson were married December 12, 1937, in Littlefield, Texas. Mr. Hankins was a member of Marietta's First Baptist Church.

Callie Gowing was married July 10, 1899 to DeWitt Hilton, according to “Washington County, Arkansas Marriages, 1863-1900.”

Mrs. Ann Goin Topping, "late widow and only heir-at-law of Britton Goin, deceased," received the land grant due Britton Go-in, a veteran of the war of 1812, according to "Arkansas Mili-tary Bounty Grants" by Katherine Christensen. Ann Goin Topping received land grant No. 25,493 in White County in 1824.

Bettie Gowan appeared in the 1880 census of White County, living in the household of Russell Price, No. 198-201, in Cane Township. She was enumerated on June 16, 1880 as:

J. G. Gowan, "age 27, born in Al," died in November 1859 "of consumption," in White County, according to the 1860 Arkan-sas mortality schedule.

Two Gowen families appeared in White County, in the 1850 census. They were the families of G. W. Gowen and G. J. Gowen, household No. 101-101 in Gray township.

They were apparently brothers or close first cousins. They were both professional gamblers, both born in Tennessee and both had lived in Alabama in 1838 and 1839.

A Gowen Grocery was operated during the 1960's in Garner, Arkansas in White County.

The sheriff of Ft. Bend County knew that John Steel Gowen was a member of an outlaw gang that roamed through the area in the turbulent days that followed the Civil War and sought an opportunity to arrest him. He had fled to Texas riding a horse stolen in Arkansas and with the knowledge that he had killed a man there. In a Fulshear saloon, he quickly joined up with the bush-whackers. While still in his teens, Gowen was labeled a horse-thief, a cattle rustler and a desperado. He lived the life of a nightrider with the lawless group for six years, robbing and stealing--and did it successfully, according to some. He was never caught.

Then came word from Arkansas that he was not a murderer, that the victim, his uncle, had survived and that he was not charged with any crime--either in Arkansas or in Texas! Just as quickly as he had turned to a life of crime, he became respectable and law-abiding. He moved to Houston, got a job with a large gro-cery concern and became a model member of the community, at the age of 21.

Mrs. M. Gowen was born in Arkansas in 1835, according to her enumeration in the 1860 census of White County. Apparently she was married about 1858, husband's name unknown. In 1860 she appeared in Searcy, Arkansas living with her son at Kellum's Hotel.

John Steel Gowen was born in a room in Kellum's Hotel in Sear-cy, Arkansas in August 1859, according to Glen Atmar Gowen, a grandson of Houston. Having been abandoned by his father, they were enumerated there alone in the hotel in the 1860 census of White County:

They were the only members of the Gowen family to appear in White County in 1860. The father, name unknown, born in Ireland, was orphaned and worked as a cabinboy to pay for his passage to the United States, according to Glen Atmar Gowen, a grandson of Houston, Texas, however it is likely that this family legend applies to the father of John Steel Gowen. Faced with the responsibility of a new baby and a sickly wife, he "went west." When his mother died, a reluctant uncle took John Steel Gowen in and loaded him with farm chores "to make a man out of him."

At 15, in an argument with the overbearing uncle, Gowen struck him on the temple with a large rock and left him in a pool of blood. Convinced that he had killed his uncle instan-tly, he stole a horse from the lot and lit out for Texas, in his mind a fugitive from justice.

Arriving in Texas he fell in with a gang of desperadoes and lived the life of an outlaw near Fulshear, Texas for the next six years. At that time he learned that his uncle had survived the rock as-sault and came out of hiding. It became apparent that he could quit and start over with a second chance.

"John S. Gowen," was listed in the 1881 city directory of Hou-ston as a salesman for J. A. McKee Company which advertised "drygoods, groceries and beer." He became a model citizen and lived in a respectable part of town "on the west side of Brewster Street, two blocks north of Sewell Street." He was married in 1883 to Mariah Jane Johnston, age 14, born in Texas in August 1869.

Mariah Jane Johnston was one of five children of William E. Johnston. His ancestors came to Texas with Stephen F. Austin and were members of Austin’s Old 300, according to the re-search of Betty Vaughn, a descendant of James Woodall John-ston, a brother of Mariah Jane Johnston Gowen.

In the 1889-1890 city directory John Steel Gowen was a repre-sentative of Browne & Bollfross, Grocers and lived at 30 Spruce Street. In 1891, John Steel Gowen went into business with Wil-liam F. Ludtke as "Ludtke & Gowen, Butchers, on the west side of Liberty Street between Chestnut & Chapman." He owned a home "at the northeast corner of Donley & Gregg Streets." In 1897, he removed his family to nearby Wharton County.

John Steel Gowen appeared as the head of the household in the 1900 census of Wharton County, Enumeration District 58, page 7, precinct 4:

In 1902 they lived at Halletsville, Texas. In 1913 they again lived in Houston. Until his death May 31, 1919 in Harris Count-y, John Steel Gowen was engaged in farming and stock-raising. Mariah Jane Johnston Gowen died October 12, 1926 and was buried at Eagle Lake, Texas.

May Belle Gowen, daughter of John Steel Gowen and Mariah Jane Johnston Gowen, was born about 1883 and died in infancy.

Marie L. Gowen, daughter of John Steel Gowen and Mariah Jane Johnston Gowen, was born in October 1884. About 1904 she was married to Arthur Caylor, rice farmer and poultry farmer of Notawa, Texas. After the death of Arthur Caylor about 1940, Marie L. Gowen Caylor was remarried to Vance Readdick who died about 1960. Three children were born to the first union and none to the second. Marie L. Gowen Caylor Readdick died June 18, 1970, at the age 84, at the home of her daughter, Grace Caylor McElmurry at Eagle Lake, Texas.

Grace Caylor, daughter of Arthur Caylor and Marie L. Gowen Caylor, was born about 1903 at Notawa, Texas. About 1923 she was married, husband's name McElmurry and the couple was later divorced. In January 1972 Grace Caylor McElmurry made her home on Cemetery Street, Eagle Lake.

Thomas Lee Caylor, son of Arthur Caylor and Marie L. Gowen Caylor, was born about 1905 at Notawa. About 1926 he was married, wife's name Ethel. To this union a son and daughter were born.

Eddie Caylor, son of Arthur Caylor and Marie L. Gowen Caylor, was born about 1908 at Notawa. About 1930 he was married, wife's name Bessie. No children were born to this union.

Mattie Gowen, daughter of John Steel Gowen and Mariah Jane Johnston Gowen, was born in October 1886. About 1910 she was married to Jasper Weaver. Both were deceased before January 1972.

Floyd Weaver, son of Jasper Weaver and Mattie Gowen Weaver, was born about 1912. About 1935 he was married, wife's name unknown.

Bessie Mae Weaver, daughter of Jasper Weaver and Mattie Gowen Weaver, was born about 1915. She was married twice and had a son and daughter. In January 1972 she was living at New Waverly, Texas.

John Linder Gowen, son of John Steel Gowen and Mariah Jane Johnston Gowen, was born in November 1890. He was married about 1907, wife's name Dot. John Linder Gowen, appeared in the 1907 directory of Houston living at 1817 State Street. He was employed as a yardman by Houston Show Case Factory. In the 1910-1911 edition he was listed as a woodworker for Myers Spalti Manufacturing Company, living at 2710 Loraine. His household consisted of two people. He was accidently killed by his wife who shot him in the heart with a .22 calibre rifle as he lay in bed. His death is recorded in Harris County, death records on October 9, 1910.

In the 1911 and 1912 city directories of Houston Dot Gowen was listed as the night chief operator for Southwestern Tele-phone & Telegraph Company living at 1913 Moffitt. In 1915 Dot Gowen, "widow of John Gowen" was living at 2311 Jarrell, according to the city directory.

Glenn Atmar Gowen, only son of John Linder Gowen and Dot Gowen, was born December 21, 1908 in Harris County, accord-ing to BVS File 837464. He was married about 1930, wife's name Leta B. Later the couple was divorced, and Glenn Atmar Gowen was remarried, wife's name Maxine Gowen.

Leta B. Gowen in 1960 lived at 1419 Munger, Houston with Lo-retta Gowen, unidentified. In January 1972 Leta B. Gowen, a legal secretary lived at 1518 Lawson Street in Houston.

Glenn Atmar Gowen and Maxine Gowen lived at 927 Eastlake Street in Houston where he was employed as a salesman for Cargill Printing and Stationery in 1972.

George Allen Gowen, son of Glenn Atmar Gowen and Leta Gowen, was born September 10, 1933 in Harris County, ac-cording to BVS File 71781. In March 1972 he continued to live in Houston.

Glenn Atmar Gowen, Jr, son of Glenn Atmar Gowen and Leta Gowen, was born April 2, 1937 in Harris County, according to the BVS File 29840. It is believed that he died young.

John Linder Gowen, son of Glenn Atmar Gowen and Leta Gow-en, was born March 17, 1942 in Harris County, according to BVS File No. 45843. He was married about 1962, wife's name unknown. In 1963 they lived in Harris County, and in March 1972 they lived in League City, Texas.

John Linder Gowen, Jr. son of John Linder Gowen, was born December 20, 1963 in Harris County, according to BVS File No. 222806.

Eddie Steel Gowen, son of John Steel Gowen and Mariah Jane Johnston Gowen, was born August 22, 1897 in Wharton County, according to BVS File No. 443743. About 1915 he was married to Johnnie Crenshaw, who was born at Shreveport, Louisiana January 25, 1898.

Eddie Steel Gowen died in Harris County, Texas June 27, 1957, according to BVS File No. 31966. At that time Johnnie Cren-shaw Gowen was reported living at 4828 Oak Street in Houston.

John Edward Gowen, son of Eddie Steel Gowen and Johnnie Crenshaw Gowen, was born June 6, 1928. About 1948 he was married, wife's name Mary E. Two sons were born to this union.

John Edward Gowen was employed for many years by Sinclair Refining Company. In 1962 John Edward Gowen and Mary E. Gowen lived at 2110 Raymond Avenue, Pasadena, Texas. In 1972 they lived at 1207 Avenue J, Pasadena.

Irene Redding Gowen, daughter of John Steel Gowen and Mar-ion Jane Johnston Gowen, was born in July 1899, probably at Hallettsville. She went to school at Wallis, Notawa and Hous-ton. About 1918 she was married to Ted Swindon. Two sons were born to this union. Later she married Fred Miller as her second husband, and no children were born to this union. She and her two husbands were deceased by January 1972.

Jesse Swindon, son of Ted Swindon and Irene Redding Gowen Swindon, was born about 1920. In 1972 he was living at Hous-ton.

Tommie Swindon, son of Ted Swindon and Irene Redding Gowen Swindon, was born about 1923. In 1972 he was a metalsmith residing at Warrenville, Illinois.

Jesse Eugene Gowen, son of John Steel Gowen and Mariah Jane Johnston Gowen, was born January 31, 1902 at Hallettsville in Lavaca County, according to BVS File No. 100730. He attend-ed schools at Wallis, Notawa and Houston. In 1913 his family moved to Houston.

On May 23, 1925, according to Madison County, Texas Mar-riage Book H, page 512 he was married to Essie Mae McGrew, who was born March 11, 1895 at Cushman, Arkansas. The couple was divorced in 1941. They were remarried December 5, 1952, according to Lamar County, Texas Marriage Book 48, page 572.

Jesse Eugene Gowen and his wife, "Mae Mayo Gowen," con-tracted with Hubert Harold Yancy on July 30, 1956 for the pay-ment of $4,249.04, according to Lamar County, Texas Deed Book 344, page 555. On April 27, 1958 they made a deed to Horace F. Wharton, according to Deed Book 387, page 254.

In January 1972 Jesse Eugene Gowen and Essie Mae McGrew Gowen were living on a farm at Paris, Texas where they were visited by Arlee Claud Gowen January 7, 1972. No children were born to this union.

Florence Adella Gowen, daughter of John Steel Gowen and Mariah Jane Johnston Gowen, was born May 5, 1905 at Hal-lettsville. About 1925 she was married to Fred Miller, half brother to Dee Pittman.

Donald Pittman, son of Dee Pittman and Florence Adella Gowen Pittman, was born about 1927. He was married and divorced after fathering two children. In 1972 he lived in Houston.

Lorraine Pittman, daughter of Dee Pittman and Florence Adella Pittman, was born about 1930. In February 1972 she lived in Houston.

Nancy Gowen appeared in the 1880 census of White County, enumerated in the Dogwood Township, Enumeration District No. 290. page 16, as:

Rachel Gowen was married to Isaac Flannery November 1, 1848, according to White County marriage records.

Rachel Gowen, age 9, an orphan, appeared June 4, 1880 in the household of T. D. Rogers in Union Township District No. 280, page 13. Both of her parents were born in Arkansas.

S. V. Goin was married September 1, 1881 to Sallie L. Mason, according to Yell County marriage records. Children born to S. V. Goin and Sallie L. Mason Goin are unknown.
