Robert Green Sr

[INDIV2.DAT]

Occupation: Farmer

There is no specific evidence to support the relationship of Robert to this family; however, due to the following circumstances, it is assumed that Robert's parents are indeed Benjamite and Dinah (Greene) Greene:

1) The proximity of family members in the upstate New York area:

a) Robert Cook of Otego, NY, son of Samuel Cook whose first wife was Enfield Greene. Robert married Demaris and Dinah Greene first cousins, once removed, of Robert Greene {5}, Benjamite's father.

b) Lois Greene Weaver, daughter of Benjamite lived in West Oneonta, NY

c) Dinah Lee Greene Cook, Robert's mother, moved to Otego before 1800.

2) The first names of Robert and Naomi Greene's children include family names such as Diadama, Lois, Clark and specifically "Benjamite".

3) The approximate date of birth of Benjamite's {6} second son was between 1767 and 1774.

4) The spelling of the family surname by Robert's first born son, Clark as GREENE.

5) The continuing story of the Greene family embellished more by my father, Owen C. Green, and my uncle, Carl G. Green as related by Luman Dominick about the change of name of the Green family from Clarke to Greene to protect themselves from detection from the law because "they were probably horse thieves".

6) This is a variation of the saga related by Lora S. La Mance in her book, "The Greene Family and its Branches" published in 1904. In her story, John Greene, The Fugitive, who is probably Robert Greene's {6} eighth great grandfather was pursued by the King of England and did change his name to Clarke to avoid capture.

1810: Census Record indicates 31010 01010
Name of family head; number of free white males and females in age categories: 0 to 10, 10 to 16, 16 to 26, 26 to 45, 45 and older; number of other free persons except Indians not taxed; number of slaves; and town or district and county of residence.

1812: He was a fifer in the War against Britain

1831: Purchased 100 acres of land in Lot #34 of Evans Patent, Subdivision #5 from Benjamite Greene and Charles Hess.

1858: Petition for Letter of Administration on his estate; dated 29 Mar Photocopy of inventory of goods is retained by Gary O. Green

Inventory of Goods:

1. One note of $10.92 cts due against Harry Bryant

2. One note given 23 Sept 56 of $50 due 1 Jan 59 against Harry Bryant

3. One note of $50 given 23 Sept 56 due 1 Jan 60 against Harry Bryant

4. One Mortgage on Real Estate of $416.68

5. One Coat

6. Account against Albert Green of $13 lent money in fall of 1857

7. Account against Abraham Wright of $2.18 lent money in fall of 1857

8. One hat

9. One Satten Vest

10. One over coat

11. One pair of pants

Also inventoried were one bed and bedding, six chairs, one table, six knives and forks, six spoons, one chest.

One hundred and fifty dollars is set off to the widow out of the above mentioned notes and mortgage under the new exemption.

1992: Another possible variation comes from the conversation Carl G. Green had with his father when Carl was a teenager and was preparing a family history for a school project. Grant Green related that Robert came from Ireland to England; married in England; migrated to Rhode Island and later moved to the East Bank of the Otego Creek, Otsego County, NY. Robert established his home as a "Squatter" and raised his family. This has many possibilities but does seem to skip generations in its final review of the story.

Robert Green does have records showing ownership of land in Barbourville, Delaware County, NY; he was from the state of Rhode Island as indicated by the 1850 census; his son, Clark, does seem to have taken residence in the location on the East Bank of the Otego Creek. Therefore, much of the family tradition is carried on by this portion of the story.

Barbourville is situated on the Astraguntira creek, six or seven miles northeast by north of Deposit. Three brothers, James I., William and John Barbour, came from Saratoga county about 1820, and settled in what was then called Cook's settlement, but was named after the Barbours came Barbourville.

Sylvenus Palmerton, Ichabod Culver, Noah Hamblet, Ralph Smith, Daniel Woods and Robert Green were well known early settlers in the neighborhood, leaving many descendants.

Naomi Cummings

[INDIV2.DAT]

Her birth place could be RI, NH or VT as well; her birth is unrecorded.
After review of information obtained from the INTERNET, it is probable that Naomi is the child of Stephen Cummings, Sr and his wife Mary. Although there is no specific mention of Naomi, the following circumstantial evidence allows this assumption:

1) Stephen Cummings, Sr and his wife Mary were in Coventry, Kent Count, RI around the time of birth of Naomi.

2) There is a large gap between births of Stephen Cummings, Jr (b. 1772) and the next recorded child, Levi Cummings (b. 1786). Naomi's probable birth date is 1775/7.

3) Stephen Cummings and family travelled through Pownal, VT about the same time as Robert Green and Naomi Cummings would have been moving west.

4) Stephen Cummings and his family settled in Pittsfield/New Lisbon, Otsego County, NY which is situated just north of Delaware County where Robert and Naomi settled in Barbourville, NY.

5) Mary K. Witherbee had indicated that Naomi's father's name was Stephen and her grandfather's name was Abraham which fits this family.

6) A query on the Cummings Family Genealogy Forum received a reply concurring with the circumstantial evidence of Naomi's placement in this family.

Dinah Greene

[INDIV2.DAT]

Moved to Otego, NY before 1800 with her husband, Robert, his three sons, and probably his daughter, Mary. Her grandson, Russell Weaver identifies her as Dinah "Lee" and this may be caused by her mother's maiden name confusion.

1809: Received five dollars from her father's will because she had already received her portion.

1811: received from her husband, Robert's will: "the mair I now ride, one cow, 5 sheep, half of all indoor movables and use of the other half during her lifetime. The last half to be divided finally among Robert, Rufus, and Mary. Dinah to receive one-third of profits of Real Estate."

There is a set of headstones within a wrought iron fenced area on the left side of the cemetery with the initials "D. G." on one and "R. C." on the other; it can only be assumed that these are the headstones for Demaris or Dinah Greene and Robert Cook because they are next to the headstone for Robert Cook, Jr and his wife.

Lora S. La Mance believed her name was "Sarah" on p 102.

A note about Capt. Samuel G. Cook which you may find interesting or useful for your records. Jay & Cathy

COOK HISTORY
As provided by Will and Dodie Thorne at the 1997 Cook Reunion. This was compiled from stories told by Minnie Cook, the Captain's granddaughter who knew him in life. Minnie Cook was Will Thorne's mother.

Captain Samuel Cook was born in Oneonta in the year 1794. His mother was of Scottish descent. Her grandmother being of royal blood and claimed the right to the Throne of Scotland.

His father was an Englishman who lived in Rhode Island early in life. From there he moved to Oneonta where Samuel was born. Captain Samuel married Diademia, daughter of Robert Greene. He remained in Oneonta during his young manhood, then came to Tioga with his family in 1833.

His occupations were numerous and varied. He was fond of fishing and hunting. As game at this time was large and abundant, the meal for the table was usually wild game, which fell before his trusty rifle. The family was
generally supplied with venison and occasionally the Captain brought a large bear to the little log cabin.

Some of his time was spent in clearing the wooded land, but he was not much of a farmer and he often acted in the capacity of a lawyer and tried small suits, such as contracts, deeds, and wills for neighbors, But his chief
delight was in spring time when he went down the river on rafts carrying loads of timber to sell at various cities from Owego to Chesapeake. From this he was given the title of Captain, which always clung to him.

Captain Cook was a great athlete. He excelled in jumping. He often told his children, that in his youth the boys would draw a string at the top of his head, which was nearly six feet, and by stepping back sixteen feet, he
could take a run and jump over it. A great wrestler, and when angered, sometimes indulged in fighting.

He enlisted in the war of 1812, but was never called into actual service.

In personal appearance, the Captain was five feet, eleven inches in height, weighed about one hundred sixty-five pounds, and stood perfectly erect. He had large, full, dark blue eyes, in which were expressed an uncontrollable
temper, which governed, rather than be governed by grandfather.

His nose was the same as has been transmitted to the present Cook family, large and bulky. His high forehead gave signs of natural intellect. He wore no beard. His hair, dark and heavy, somewhat curly, and heavy eyebrows.
His teeth were all double and only one was ever drawn, which nearly drove the Captain to distraction, this being the time when turnkeys were the things used for extracting teeth.

His habits were not the most temperate. He smoked and chewed tobacco, although not a drunk, he went on an occasional spree.

His wife was a quiet, lady-like woman, who found her household chores sufficient to keep her from sharing in political argument. For to them were born 15 children, 11 of which grew to maturity: Dewitt, Caroline, Mary,
Lois, Samuel, Nelson, John, Holden, Diademia, Charles, and Barbara.

Captain Samuel G. Cook and Diadema (Green) Cook

Samuel was born June 11, 1794, in Oneonta, New York. He married Diadema Green, and the couple parented
eleven children. Some time between 1833 and 1837 the couple and their first seven children, Dewitt, Caroline,
Lois, Mary Samuel, Nelson and John, moved to the Tioga County community of Tioga, New York, where their
children, Holden, Diadema, Charles and Barbara were all born.

Samuel was known as Captain Samuel Cook, and for years we searched and searched for military records that
could support his rank. Finally it was learned he had no rank in the military what so ever. He was a riverboat
Captain. He floated logs down the Susquehanna River. He died on June 3, 1859 and is buried in the Chapel Hill
Cemetery, in Halsey Valley, New York, not far from his home.

Diadema Green was born in 1798. When I began studying this family in 1994, Diadema was the center of all the
attention. She was the Indian princess that the 'Captain' had married. A tintype photo of her in her later years
made it easy to believe she had come from an Indian heritage as she had very high cheek bones and was a
strong looking woman. But what type of Indian was she? We were unable to find any birth records or any death
records. After Samuel's passing, did she return to her tribe? Where is she buried? On a reservation somewhere?
Well many of these questions are still unanswered, but we now know that Diadema was not an indian.

Thanks to some outstanding records that Mary K. Witherbee shared with us, we now know that Diadema's
family came from Rhode Island, and before that, England. The only record we have of her time of passing is in
pension records of her son Samuel, where it states that she died '...on or about the first day of May 1865. He final
resting area is yet to be discovered. There are no records of her death in any of the town or county records.
There is room for a grave next to Samuel's, but it is unmarked if that is where she is. There son, Samuel and his
wife are in the grave next to Captain Samuel Cook. Their daughter Caroline, also rests very near the Captain's
grave, as is their daughter, Diadema. But the mystery of Diadema (Green) Cook's final resting place goes on.

Diadama Green

[INDIV2.DAT]

She was probably illiterate; she could only make her mark on a deed which she co signed with her husband.

1822: Quit claim from Samuel Cook, Otego to Robert Cook; Deed EE: 386 dated 16 Sep and described as part of Great Lot #39, Otego Patent. Deeded by William Cooper to Samuel Cook. (She signed with her mark)

1823: Quit claim for $150 for land bounded in part by land given to Samuel Cook, deceased, to son Rice together with use of barn, etc. Deed EE: 387 dated 14 Feb

Stephen C. Green

[INDIV2.DAT]

He may have had a middle initial of "A".

This child is difficult to find in the 1850 census with the family that was identified by Mary K. Witherbee. She identified his wife as Sarah with children Mary, Martha, Mandana, William, Ezra, Lucinda and James.
Mary also indicated his birth date was 1816.

By reviewing the 1810 census, Robert Green had three male children under the age of 10 and one male child 10-16. Robert and Benjamite would have been less than ten years of age and Clark would have been about 10 during the census. To make this fit, Stephen would also have to be born before 1810.

In addition, there is a Stephen Green living close to Diadama and Samuel Cook in Tioga, NY in 1850 with wife Polly Ann and children Elizabeth A., Lidia, Emisobe E., Delos F., and Delia M. This Stephen was born about 1804 and would fit into Robert Green's family.
