In Virginia films are at VSL, FHC. Original material can be found at Monterey (Highland County), Orange (Orange County), Staunton (Augusta County). The West Virginia State Archives in Charleston is the central repository of records from what were the western counties of Virginia until 1863. Marlinton (Pocahontas County).

- Films of the population schedules are readily available. Those from 1850 on list individuals by name. Often overlooked are specialized schedules for agriculture and slaves.
