STABLE BUILDINGS ON THE HILL PRESIDIO OF MONTEREY PRE-1940

Note: It is going to take further research to understand the different phases that the stable area up on the hill has gone through over the years. This is the original stable area of the Presidio of Monterey starting c1903 and it seems to cover the area east and south of the four original barracks, Nos. 75, 77, 79, and 81. My research of the building sheets located at the POM Archives has not given me a clear picture of the layout in the early period. I believe in the late 1920's and early 1930's a large change took place in this area. Many of the original building sheets show a lot of these buildings were demolished and replaced with new buildings including the new C.M.T.C., Camp John P Pryor. I have found no clear documentation telling of us the changes directly. My Monterey Herald newspaper microfilm research has been a good source to help put the pieces together. According to period articles the City of Monterey and the Presidio of Monterey were going through beautification projects including the waterfront. Also at the 1930 period it appears the Presidio began to receive "permanent post" status. A lot of money was being spent at this time on the Presidio including the C.M.T.C. Camp, tearing down old buildings including old stables and building new stables up on the hill and also at the lower area of the Presidio. These included the new stables for the 11th Cavalry Troops A, B, E, and F. next to the 76th Field Artillery stables at the lower Presidio that were constructed in 1922. During the 1930's there were many beautification projects by the C.C.C. and W.P.A. at the Presidio including Soldier Field. For now I will be just posting the different building sheets of stables and stable related buildings that were located as the Troopers referred to as "Up on the Hill". We hope this will lead to a greater understand in the future.
