Ritchie Sage Stewart Trees and History.

To the Ritchie, Sage, Stewart Family Tree These are the major Families in this site. Proudfoot, Lorimers, Wighton and Mc Kerrons and many others included.

History of all known Sages in Scotland.

While researching the families it became very clear that there was only small numbers of Sage's in Scotland. All Sages that can be found have been collected and arranged into Trees. For the Inverness Sage's they can be connected together into a single Tree that originates about 1590, by 1840 they are hard to find and in the 1881 census they have gone. Sages appear in the Greenock and Hamilton areas about the same time but so far unable to prove they are all simply moves from Inverness to Lanark as few of them had children in both places. Some however have been traced. For the Story of the Clan Sage up to 1900
See SAGE'S IN SCOTLAND.

There are in fact a very few Sages not included, Bishop Sage who claimed seven generations of History does not make it. A Military Sage at the Siege of Dundee also is excluded.

The records used were mostly the Parish Records that have been kept since the early 1600's. However they are not complete, over time some have been lost, destroyed, or eaten by mice. In addition they tend to have been recorded by the Established Church clerk, so not all of the many splinter groups recorded with them, some kept their own records. The Sages seem to have been recorded better than many groups, however some complete families are missing. For example none of the Sages from Locharon appear in the official records, they are in the Church record.

More Ritchies.

In the attempts to find information about the First Ritchie a Tree was constructed covering the Ritchies who lived arround Lasswade. Later a person made enquiries about a branch who had married a Luke. This is given as they lived in Penicuik and the surrounding area. Ritchies in Penicuik Lasswade

Another branch of the Ritchie lived in Peebles. In 1781 a son William Ritchie was born to John Ritchie and Margaret Noble in Peebles. In 1841 census a Wilhehimina Ritchie aged 76 lived in High St Peebles, also close to them Robert Ritchie and Margaret lived aged 56, just right to be Wilhehimina's son. The name Wilhemina is unique, only two cases are known so logically they must be related. Wilhemina Daughter of Margaret in Port was the Grand daughter of the Wilhehimina in Peebles. The records for this time can only be described as patchy, but feel confident that the connection is correct. This means that the Ritchie origins must be in Peeblesshire.
The use of Peebles as a current name started with the Sage marrying a Peebles in Perth, the Perth Peebles name was probably a corruption of a Continental name as the early spellings vary widely.
