Subject: Re: [Wat-sc] On the trail of ancestors of Joseph Watkins,Sr.'s (d.ca.1827, Pickens/SC)

Lee, I wrote to you several years ago about the connection of Stokes, Rowan, and Surry counties in NC and I pursued this until family events interfered with my research.  I saw enough in Surry at the time to believe that there was a connection of the Joseph Watkins, Sr. family to Surry.  .The following is info I collected at that time and I have more in my notes somewhere which I will attempt to find later.  .

“The families in Pendleton and Greenville Districts were from Stokes County, NC., originally Rowan County, where they lived in the 1770’s.”

“Capt. John Kees was granted land on Tugaloo 10 Jan. 1787, which he sold 5 Feb. 1801 to David Barton. He, Jacob and Elijah Kees were in Pendleton in 1790.  Peter Keys and wife, Lettie, and John and Joshua Keys lived some distance away in what is now Anderson County.”  Pg. 34

1800 Census of Pendleton District, South Carolina, Compiled with an introduction by William C. Stewart, Foreword by Carleton E. Fisher, published by National Genealogical Society

I recall reading also that a man named Cleveland organized a group from Rowan County to migrate to the Tugaloo River area of the Pendleton District.

These are census records I have to date but don’t vouch for it being a thorough search of these NC counties.  I recently sent some of this to Lois and it appears that she has been following up on it.
