Subject: [Wat-sc] The Smith Family

Howdy Folks!
Not a peep out of you since the new switch over.  So I am throwing you  something to ponder.  Call me crazy or whatever but I am studying the Smith Family because one of the researchers managed to trace their  lineage all the way to England.  Why not us?  We can do it!  My burning question still is: "Who's the father of Joseph Watkins, Sr.?"

After the discovery of Emphraim Lee and Keziah Watkins living next door to Henry Watkins, Sr. in the 1830 (Pickens) SC census (pg. 301), guess who lived next door to Emphraim Lee?  John Smith!  Gee, too many John Smiths!  Using his age 30/40 in 1830, I should find him (age 40/50) in 840.  Guess what?  Living next door to Henry Watkins, Sr. was John Smith age 40/50 in 1840 (Pickens) SC (pg. 333)!  There was no question in my mind that his spouse was Henry Watkins, Sr.'s daughter!

Checking the 1850 (Pickens) SC pg. 518, this is what I found:
John Smith age 52 NC (b.1798)
Nancy age 51 SC (b.1799)
John F age 18 SC
Susannah age 17 SC
B F age 15 SC
Janice R age 13 SC
Eliza A 9 age SC
Zachariah age 8 SC

Guess who lived next door to John Smith?  Zachariah Smith age 78 b. NC...that's John Smith's father!  Next door was Wm. L. Smith age 24, didn't someone mention about him living with Henry and Hannah Watkins in 1860?

Shoot!  There's no 1810 (Pickens) SC census for Henry Watkins, Sr. for me to see if Nancy b.1799 fits his female b. 1794-1800.  Can you all tell me what to do?  Do you have any Smith information that you are willing to share with me?
Lois

Subject: Re: [Wat-sc] On the trail of ancestors of Joseph Watkins,Sr.'s (d.ca.1827, Pickens/SC)

Lee, I wrote to you several years ago about the connection of Stokes, Rowan, and Surry counties in NC and I pursued this until family events interfered with my research.  I saw enough in Surry at the time to believe that there was a connection of the Joseph Watkins, Sr. family to Surry.  .The following is info I collected at that time and I have more in my notes somewhere which I will attempt to find later.  .

“The families in Pendleton and Greenville Districts were from Stokes County, NC., originally Rowan County, where they lived in the 1770’s.”

“Capt. John Kees was granted land on Tugaloo 10 Jan. 1787, which he sold 5 Feb. 1801 to David Barton. He, Jacob and Elijah Kees were in Pendleton in 1790.  Peter Keys and wife, Lettie, and John and Joshua Keys lived some distance away in what is now Anderson County.”  Pg. 34

1800 Census of Pendleton District, South Carolina, Compiled with an introduction by William C. Stewart, Foreword by Carleton E. Fisher, published by National Genealogical Society

I recall reading also that a man named Cleveland organized a group from Rowan County to migrate to the Tugaloo River area of the Pendleton District.

These are census records I have to date but don’t vouch for it being a thorough search of these NC counties.  I recently sent some of this to Lois and it appears that she has been following up on it.
