“John Grono, sailor, settler, sealer, ship builder, and celebrity: a new evaluation”
by Peter Procter

The Grono Family Association kindly thanks Peter Procter for the opportunity to share his very interesting research on John Grono with the rest of the family.

The book arose as a result of a talk that Peter gave on John Grono at The Heraldry and Genealogy Society of Canberra (HAGSOC) back in 2013. Peter has been the Society’s Honorary Research Officer for more than twenty years. Peter’s family were immigrants from England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland. Besides a bit of volunteering, he works on the local history of nineteenth century Queanbeyan and Tuggeranong. Peter’s wife is a descendant of Maria Grono and William Mobbs.

Peter’s book provides a new perspective on John Grono’s life and complements the earlier work done by the late Robert Taylor. It covers different aspects of John Grono’s life compared to Robert Taylor’s book. The book provides a broader historical context to the decisions Grono made and the life that he led and also takes a closer look at John Grono’s business dealings, land holdings and the role of partnerships in his enterprises. The book is 169 pages long, illustrated and indexed.

“John Grono 1767 - 1847: Our Old Colonial Neptune”
by Robert Taylor

Robert Taylor kindly allowed the Grono Family Association to publish his research into John Grono’s life. It covers John Grono's life (as far is known), with particular focus on his association with the sea. It covers what is known of his Royal Navy career in England and then with the Colonial Vessels in Australia, his private sea voyages (which included many trips to the whaling and sealing areas around the New Zealand coastline), as well as his ship-building enterprise on the Hawkesbury River.
The book is 153 pages long and is fully indexed.
