David Paulsell Complaintant vs. Henry Dyke and wife, William McBride and wife, & Margaret Delaney
In early years Francis Delaney and son James took by occupancy 2 tracts of land in Greene Co. Francis 200 acres on Little Chucky and James 100 actre on Cedar Brancy. Father and Son exchanged entries with each others improvements. James applied for another 100 acres but Francis Delaney received the 100 acres grant and registered it the name of James, 24 Oct 1782. In May 1784 Francis Delaney died and left will willing 100 acres to widow Agnes Delaney - & at her death to daughter Agnes Delaney who married Henry Earnest and had a daughter Agnes Eminol? Who married Lyons Inman they being the only heirs of Agnes (afterwards Emanel) who is dead. Complt. Bought 50 acres of the land from Joseph Shannon thinking he could get a good deed, files a claim for other 50 acres (I guess cant understand). Henry Dyke says he bought heirs share of Francis Delaney his wife, McBrides wife and Margaret Delaney of Overton Co. were sisters and daughters of James Delaney. Heirs had sold shares of James Delaney for $50.00 each, so did Margaret Delaney. Committee to arbitrate: David Rankin Esq., Robert Rankin, David Good, John Daily, Hiram Daily, John S. Reed, David Guin, Moses G. Wilson Alfred ___Ton, Mordecai Lincoln, James Patterson, Sammuel Stanfield, James Henry to arbitrate. They decided Dykes deed is only good deed shown. Francis Delaney was father of James Delaney, James was father of Respdt. Sarah. James Delaneys children were small when he died they were told of said land by John Delaney, brother of James, who is now dead. James wifes name was Elizabeth and has been dead 12 years she claimed to have sold to Mr. Wilson. 25 May 1826 Bill dismissed Paulsel to pay costs. Wit: Susannah Chedster, Lydia Stanfield, Gravener Marsh. (I cannot tell where David Paulsel fits in this unless he was a grandson G.F.B.) (Chancery Court Minutes Greene County, Tennessee, November 1825 January 183? by Goldene Fillers Burgner; p. 7)
1828 - 22 May 1828
David Paulsell vs. Henry Dyke & his wife, William McBride and his wife & Margaret Delaney
Complainant failed in complainants Suit dismissed. (Chancery Court Minutes Greene County, Tennessee, November 1825 January 183? by Goldene Fillers Burgner; p. 30)
1840 - #295 16 March 1840 William Smith Elizabeth Milburn -- David Paulsell - Mar. 17, 1840 Jesse Roberts, J.P. (Greene Co., TN Marriages, 1783-1868 by Golden Fillers Burgner p. 120)
1847 - David Paulsell sold a piece of land to David Brumley on 6 Feb 1847. Actually, the sale was 13 Dec 1843, but this deed is dated 1847 and it was recorded 15 June 1848. It was land that had been granted in name of his daughter Betsy, but David states that he entered it with his own money. Since David Paulsell signed this deed (with his mark), we can assume that he was living in 1847. However, from the wording of the clerk, it is hard to tell if he was living in 1848 when it was recorded. (Melanie Nolan)
1849 - 1 Oct Lewis Rankin is granted letters of administration on the estate of David Paulsell. It says that David is deceased and died without a will. (Melanie Nolan)
1850 - Sales of the personal property of David Paulsell deceased, recorded 7 Jan 1850. However, Lewis Rankins afidavit for the sale is dated 13 Oct 1849, which must be the actual date of the sale. (Melanie Nolan)
It appears that David Paulsell died between the 15 June 1848 and 1 Oct 1849. There are no feminine articles in the list of sale items except for a few household items, but no ladies riding saddle, spinnng wheel, etc. His wife Elizabeth was probably dead by then, probably by the time of the above deed. (Notes for David Paulsell by Charle Roland McCain)
The origins of David Paulsell has been difficult to find. There are so many clues, all different.
A Mrs Anna Ghidoni of the Wilson family (Martha Ann Paulsell, b 1833, married Napolean Wison) wrote that her sister worked on the Paulsell genealogy, and that the Paulsells came from England (from the the same place as George Washington) and came to America before the Revolutionary War. They settle at Albemarle Sound, SC at the time of the Declaration of Mecklenberg. This is yet to proved.
Another scenario is that a Jacob PAUSE (either the last consonant was not heard by the British recorder at the dock in Philadelphia or time erased it) came to America from Rotterdam on the ship WILLIAM & SARAH on 18 Sep 1727 at Philadelphia. Jacob was the only person in his party. It is assumed he was not married at the time.
During the Revolutionary War in Pennsylvania, a "Capt Paulsell" was mentioned when a Jacob Kramer applied for a pension. Jacob claimed he served under regimental commander Capt. Hausecker, then under Capt. Weltman in Capt. Paulsell's company who was later replaced by a Capt. Boyer. Jacob's term of service was from 19 Jul 1776 until 19 Jul 1779. In 1818 Jacob Kramer was 62.
Lee Paulsell of Tuscon, AZ, wrote in the PHELPS COUNTY GENEALOGY SOCIETY QUARTERLY, July 1898, that the family of Peter and Anna Barbara Balzel emmigrated to America and settled at New Germany, Frederick County, Maryland ca 1750. They were
naturalized in Baltimore in 1761. Had the Balzels been British, they would not have been required to be naturalized. Peter's son, Peter, Jr., and his wife, Catherine, had a son ca 1775, but there do not seem to be any records to support that statement. This would have been about the time of the David Paulsell's birth.
What are David Paulsell's origins? At this point, no noe can offer a definitve answer. But one who stidies the migration of German Immigrants from 1725-1750 must get a "feeling" that the Paulsells, Paulsels, Paulels, Balzels, Baltzels, Polsels, Palcils, and a alist of variations on the modern name may have been related, but it seems nore likely now (1989) that our families have different European origins and the spellings are a coincidence.
The two branches of Paulsells (with one and two Ls) lived in Missouri in the 19th century. Of course this complicates family history. Several of the same names are repeated in both branches.

MARRIAGE: In the TN marriage records his surname is listed as Paaulson.
TAX LIST: 1805 Greene Co, TN

MISCELLANEOUS: In searching the 1900 U. S. Census, I have found that there were some Pausels in Pennsylvania and Ohio. There were Paulsels in Indiana, Pennsylvania, Missouri (born in Germany) and Oregon. Jeremiah Paulsel (or Paulsell, he spelled it both ways) states that he was born in Indiana in Oct 1816 in the 1900 Washington Couty, Oregon census. He states that his father was born in New York and his mother in Germany. It could be that if we find Jeremiah's father, he might be a brother or some relative to David Paulsell. (ggh 2 Sep 2001)

This isn't the Catherine Paulsell that's listed in the 1880 Multnomah Co, OR census.

Greene Co, Tn court record indicate Nathan was considered incompetent to handle his own affairs. He lived with his father in TN until David Paulsell's death, then moved to Missouri. the 1860 Greene Co, MO Densus shows him living with his brother, Henry. He is shown twice within two pages of the 1850 Greene Co, Mo census. Once living with or next door to his brother Henry and then a few houses down and he's listed with the correct age but is named Newton Paulsell in that record.
