Mary's father, Francis Gittau, a distinguished physician, who was banished from France during the persecution of the Huguenots in connection with St Bartholomew's day. Required to renounce protestantism, or sacrifice all that the heart holds dear on earth, he made the sacrifice for conscience sake. His property, which was ample, was confiscated. His wife, with three young children, was torn from his embrace. Thus destitute and desolate he was banished to a distant foreign country, but he who holds the winds in his fist directed the ship to the shores of England where he was landed. His wife knowing nothing of his far, manage to transport her little charge also to England. There, landed on the beach, she sat neglected while others were received by friends or shared the kindness and hospitality of strangers; then raising a loud and bitter cry, she exclaimed: Is there none here who can speak the French language? Attracted by the cry and the accents of his native tongue, a stranger went to her relief and sank into the embrace of his lost, despairing wife, by this surprising providence receiving her with their little ones as alive from the dead! Once more united, an unbroken family in foreign land, like their Divine Master, they had not where to lay their heads. Still the subjects of penury and of persecution they took refuge in the wilds of America, the home of the oppressed. The names of their three sons born in France, were Francis, Ephraim and Joshua. Other children were born to them in America, from whom a mumerous posterity have descended worthy of their pious and distinguishe ancestry. Mary Gittau wife of David Lyman died in 1803 aged 85 years.
