Old Marengo Cemetery: This small old cemetery is located on land
originally owned by Ward Burley who received a patent on
14 Mar 1840 although he actually settled here 4 or 5 years earlier.
His two year old son may have been the first burial and Burley,
a physician and dry goods dealer, was interred here in July 1847. By
the end of the 1850's as Marengo's population grew the burial
grounds quickly reached capacity. When Marengo City Cemetery
was established many remains were moved to the new area.

Portrait and Biography Album Knox County, Illinois
Francis Orman Crocker. After an active business life covering full half a century. Mr
Crocker finally retired to private life in Galesburg in 1883. His parents, John and Rebecca (Tibbetts) Crocker, natives of Main, where they were married, emigrated to Indiana 1836
when the senior Mr. C. died at the age of 55 years. His widow survived him nearly
a quarter of a century, and died in St. Joseph County, Ind, in 1872.
Our subject was born in Exeter, Me., Aug 20, 1815, and was the third child
and first son born in the family that reared six sons, and three daughters.
The paternal ancestor was a farmer by occupation and the six sons were
brought up to that honorable vocation, and received such learning as was
readily attainable at the log-cabin schoolhouse at that day in a State famous for its
primitiveness even unto this time. In 1841, the subject of this sketch came to Illinois,
and for 12 years farmed in Henderson County. In 1855 he became a resident of
Galesburg and entered soon afterward in the grocery business, from which he retired
in 1883 with a handsome competency, the result of his individual effort and industry. He
has held no offices, figured not in politics, joined no secret order, and proclaimed no
sanctification at the shrine of an church. He was married in Dearborn County, Ind., Sept.
26, 1840, to Miss Mary Brimhall, and their three children are: Oricy Villa, born April 3, 1843,
married George Nead, and on January 23, 1880, she died at Galesburg; she left an infant
son, Benjamin, who resides with his grandparents; George D. born July 12, 1845, engaged in the grocery business at Galesburg; and Emeline, born Aug. 28, 1848, married LeRoy
Bates, and she died June 12, 1882, at Galesburg, leaving a son - Nealy Bates.

I am vary glad to hear that you injoy your self so well
I cant say that I am happy sometimes in joy my self

how much trouble you have had by gettin married
and how much trouble married people in agineral way
- - and some times I think that thare aint no body for
me for I have ben ingage so many times and all ways
somthing happens to brake it up -- but I try to think it
all for the best- - and I often think of the blesin that I
got when at Nauvoo at old Father John Smiths and I
often read my blessing it reads in this way - that the
Lord shall chuse a husband for me and if mormonism
is true I nedent think ever of marring a gentile O I wish
that I did know whether it is true or not Dear Brother
I wish that I could see you and talk what I cant write

says that he shall tend the garden next summer and I am
to work at the millinery and Dress makin busness - I have
to work vary hard to make a livin - and if Sylvanus comes
I think that he will remain here and if he remains here I
shall try and persuade him to go in to busness here with
Father in ceepin a provisin store which is vary profitable
you requested me to write to all our connections I will
write to some of them I wrote to Andrew last Spring and
have not receved eny answer yet I presume that he is
not eny whare near you nor John nor Noah, I wish that
you would write somthing about Norman if you do hear
from him and Andrew to - I dont know that I can give eny
incouragment a bout comin to the vally I cant come a
lone and I dont expect that I could get eny of my foalks
to come with me - Father is old and would think to much
of a journey and thare aint eny of my brothers that is here
that would go to Salt Lake City and if should marry a gentile
then I surtain coudent come for he wodent come with me

Buried next to mother in the Stockton Cemetery on #94 two miles north of
#164 in Henderson Co., IL. His family moved to farm in Henderson County\
while he was still in a cradle. He was a sickly youth. He became a printer
for the Knoxville Republican in Knoxville, IL. In 1872, Brimhall & Smith
printing company was formed in Chicago, IL. Miss Amelia Brimhall (#419)
lived with them while he was an attorney in Chicago. Later moved and died
in CA; his body was shipped back to be laid by his mother. Story is that he
simply left nephew Horace Elmore out of his will. Horace contested it at
the suggestion of Ross. All ended up getting nothing. There were some hard
feelings.\

Latter-day Saint Biographical Encyclopedia - Vol 4
John Brimhall, a member of the Mormon Battalion, Company C,
was born April 16, 1824, in Steuben County, New York.
Becoming a convert to "Mormonism" he was baptized
Oct 20, 1845, enlisted in July, 1846, in the Battalion, marched
to Santa Fe, N.M., where he was placed with the sick
detachment and marched to Pueblo, where he spent the
winter of 1846-1847. The following spring (1847) the sick
detachment of the Battalion and the company of Mississippi
saints who had also wintered at Pueblo, continued the
journey to the "Valley", where they arrived a few days after
the Pioneers. Bro. Brimhall helped to make the first adobes
in the "Valley", passed through many of the Indian
troubles as military man and experienced the hardships which
fell to the lot of the early pioneers. After changing residences
several times, he died at Glendale, Kane Co., Utah
Dec. 18, 1906, at the age of 82 years. By his wife, Anna Retta
Harris, he had ten children, eight of whom were living at the
time of his death.

Latter-day Saint Biographical Encyclopedia - Vol 2
Noah Brimhall, a Patriarch and veteran Elder in the Church, was born
Feb. 14, 1826 at Olean, Alegany Co., New York. His parents,
Sylvanus Brimhall and Lydia Gyteau, had eight sons and three
daughters. Noah being the seventh son. Brother Brimhall is
tall and straight in statue, having in fact a military appearance;
his height is six feet, his complexion fair and his weight 167 lbs.
The eight sons of Sylvanus Brimhall were versed in mechanical
arts and farming, each receiving the best benefits of the school
systems of their State, and some of them specializing in military
tactics. Four of the brothers joined the Church, namely, Norman,
George W., John (who went with the Mormon Battalion) and Noah,
who was baptized in the Missouri river at Council Bluffs,
Iowa, by Elder William Hyde in 1848, and was soon ordained a
Seventy by Charles Bird and Albert P. Rockwood, at Council Bluffs.
Noah came to the
Valley with the family
of William Hyde arriving on July 27, 1850. In the month of June,
1853, he married
Samantha Lake, who bore him six sons and five daughters;
subsequently he married
Melina Zundell (who bore him one son) and Lavina Jones (who became
the mother of
fifteen children). In October, 1856, he was appointed captain of a
rescuing company
sent out from Ogden, consisting of thirty men and teams, who went to
bring in the rest
of the handcart companies. He participated in the Echo canyon
expedition at the time
of the coming of Johnston's Army in 1858, and was among the first
settlers of Hyrum,
Cache county, where he acted as counselor to Bishop Ola N.
Liljenquist. He is also
the first pioneer (settling with his family) in Oxford, Idaho. He
continued to be of great
service in the military organizations of Cache county, holding the
rank of major, and
was a teacher of military tactics until he removed to Arizona in the
year 1876.
Encyclopedic History of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day
Saints - Oxford Ward
In July 1864, a company of explorers sent out by Church authorities
reported the north
end of Cache Valley as a suitable place for founding new
settlements. At that time
there were no settlers in Cache Valley north or west of Franklin.
Oxford was settled the
same year by John Boice and Noah Brimhall, who built the first
cabins near the present
Oxford in the fall of 1864. Other settlers soon followed and named
their location
Stockton.

Encyclopedic History of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day
Saints - Hyrum
Hyrum was first settled in April 1860 by, among others, Noah
Brimhall. A month later
(May, 1860), Apostle Ezra T. Benson and Peter Maughan, presiding
Bishop of Cache
County, came to the location and organized the saints there into a
ward named Hyrum,
the name chosed for the townsite. That name was selected when the
rounding of
another settlement in the vicinity, to be known as the City of
Joseph, was under
contemplation. David Osborn, one of the first settlers, thought
that Hyrum, the brother
and close companion of the Prophet Joseph Smith in his martyrdom,
should also be
honored by having a town named for him. For some time the log
cabins at Hyrum were
built in fort style as a protection against Indians. A canal nine
miles long was dug,
bringing water from Little Bear River on to the location.
