father: Dinwiddie, William(1796 - )
mother: Burnsides, Martha E.(*1806 - )William Dinwiddie was war correspondent for Harper's Weekly in the Cuban War and in regard to the Boer War in South Africa. He has written an interesting book on Puerto Rico. In 1899 He was in Manila writing for Harper and the New York Herald. "He was educated in the public schools of Northern Indiana. He graduated as a physician in Philadelphia in 1860, but preferred a military life. In 1862 he entered the U.S. Army as a member of the noted 22nd Iowa Infantry. After the war closed he entered the regualar army. He was for twenty years Second and then First Lieutenant, from 1866 to 1886, when he was retired on account of injuries received in frontier duty. Although on the retired list he was still detailed to do duty as a military instructor and was promoted to the rank of Major. After leaving Champaign he was detailed to the Iowa Wesleyan University from 1887 to 1891, and then to the Iowa State Normal School where he was Commandant of the military department till "relieved because of illness, September 1901. He died November 4, 1901." The following are some extracts from the publishe account of the "Funeral of Major Dinwiddie". At one o'clock yesterday the immediate friends of the Majory and Mrs Dinwiddie and the honorary pallbearers, representing the business interests of Cedar Falls, gathered at the family residence to
accompany Mrs. Dinwiddie and the son and daughter to the Normal Auditorium where the services were held. Six of the Normal cadets were bearers. The casket was of the army gray broadcloth, covered with a wealth of beautiful, flowers. The spacious Auditorium was eloborately draped with flags and the national colors. The seating capacity is about two thousand and the room was filled with the students, faculty, friends, citizens, and members of the G.A.R. who assembled to do honor to the
soldier who for ten years had made his home with us. After the closing prayer, the procession started for Fairview Cemetery, escorted by Majory Olmsted and his cadets and the Normal band. At the cemetery three volleys were fired over the grave, the last bugle sounded, and the impressive services were ended. The Majory]'s fine black horse "Belmont" with his empty saddle and reversed stirrup was led behind the hears. His Cadets, scattered all over the world, will mourn when they learn that his duties are done, his arms laid down, and his saddle forever empty.

Grancis R. Guiteau. Located on Main Street, in
Denison, Grayson county, is the drug store of
Guiteau & Wakdribm the senior member of the
firm being the subject of this sketch.
Francis R. Guiteau, was born in Sacket's Harbor
State of New York, on the 23d day of September, 1849.
He is the son of Abraham B. and Emily (Redfield) Guiteau,
and his grandfathers were Francis Guiteau, of Connecticut,
and Theophilus Redfield of Watertown, New York. The
Guiteau family on the paternal side were early pioneers of
Connecticut and were all physicians of high standing where
they resided. Subject's great-grandfather was a Dr. Francis
Guiteau, a native of the Nutmeg State. On both the
paternal and maternal side the early progenitors were
participants in the Revolutionary War and in the War of 1812.
Abraham B., the subject's father, was a merchant of Sacket's
Harbor, where the first four years of Francis R. were spent.
The family, however, removed to Illinois, where Francis
entered the extensive drug establishment of E.H. Sargent,
of Chicago, and gave his time and attention to careful study
of the various mineral and vegetable substances known to
the practical druggist. The year of 1879, during the spring
months, found the subject located at Denison, Grayson
county, Texas, where he engaged in the drug business with
Mr. Waldron.
The 7th day of September, 1881, brought the consummation
of the nuptials of Francis R. Guiteau to Miss Eva Richardson,
a native of Rushville, Illinois. since that time Mr. and Mrs.
Guiteau have resided in Denison and the family have been
increased in number by one bright, rosy cheeked little girl,
making music with her childish prattle.
The writer of this sketch called on Mr. and Mrs. Guiteau
at their residence and was there shown some rare curiosities
handed down to posterity by the ancient Guiteaus.
Undoubtedly the most interesting feature of the numerous
articles there seen were two old geographical publications,
dating back to the seventeenth century, with the name of the
first owner of the fly leaf. The ideas and opionions then held
of this great American continent, according to the information
therein recorded, were very limited compared to the development
and enterprise of America in this nineteenth century. Texas was
at that time, so far as the early explorers' and settlers' knowledge
extended, non est.

Portrait and Biographical Record of Jasper, Marshall and Grundy

Higginson Book Co., 1994? [Reprint]S. M. BRIMHALL
Is the druggist and furniture merchant of State Centre, Marshall
County, where he is one of the first citizens. He owns considerable real
estate in this locality, and has an extensive trade in drugs and furniture. Our
subject was born near Lawrenceburgh, Dearborn County, Ind., January 30,
1838, and is a son of Horace J. and Jane (McMath) Brimhall. The former was
born on the Conhocton River, in Steuben County, N. Y., April 4, 1810.
His father, Sylvenus Brimhall, a native of one of the New England States,
was a soldier in the Revolutionary War and was of English descent. On the
maternal side, our subject's grandmother, Lydia Guiteau, was the
daughter of a prominent French surgeon, who had the distinction of coming to
America in the same ship with LaFayette. The family first settled near Benton,
Mass. Our subject's grandfather served in the War of 1812, and removed to
McHenry County, Ill., about 1840, where he died at the age of eighty years.Horace J. Brimhall, the father of our subject, was the eldest in a family of
eight children, six sons and two daughters. He had the advantage of a
good education; he read law, and was admitted to the Bar, after which he
practiced in Illinois. In 1835, he married the daughter of Samuel McMath,
who was born in Scotland and came to the United States in his boyhood.
Our subject's mother was born in Pennsylvania in 1812 and came to Indiana
with her parents. George, a brother of Horace J., a man of great culture
and piety, was a Congregational preacher in early life, but later left the
faith and cast in his lot with the Mormons at Salt Lake City, where he
became a prominent Mormon preacher, and at last accounts was alive. Samuel,
another brother, was a Baptist minister, and died in Illinois. Noah joined
the Mormon Church, became a civil engineer and is reputed to have made a
fortune. Andrew, still another brother, went to California in the early
days and was lost track of.
The gentleman whose name heads this sketch is one of eight children,
and the eldest of four sons. Lydia J. married John Phillips, a farmer in La Salle
County, Ill., Horace J. is a mechanic of Kendall County, Ill, and the
husband of Jane Lanbaugh; Mary grew to womanhood, but died single; C.W.
wedded Martha Sleeser and is engaged in the drug business at Schaller,
Sac County, this state; Lucinda became the wife of Joseph Calahan, a
farmer of Kendall County; Amelia, wife of Eugene Warren, lives in Kendall
County, Ill., where her husband is engaged in contracting and bridge building;
and Henry is a resident of Kendall County. The father died in Kendall
County January 10, 1883, and his wife in March, two years later.
When Mr. Brimhall of this sketch was an infant of two years, the
family left Indiana for Illinois, where he grew up on a farm and received a fair
education. When the late Civil War came on, he promptly tendered his
services to his country at the first call for troops, and we find his name
enrolled as a member of Company F, Thirty-sixth Illinois Infantry, July 10,
1861. He soon went to Missouri, joining General Sigel's command, and
was in the battle of Pea Ridge. He served for three years and three
months, and took part in thirteen of the great battles, among them being
Perrysville, Stone River, Chickamauga, Mission Ridge, Resaca, Jonesborough,
Atlanta, New Hope Church, Rocky Face and Kenesaw Mountain. He was
three times wounded, the first time in the right side, at the battle of Perrysville, and
for eight months he was confined to the hospital at Louisville. At Chickamauga
he was wounded in the left hand. Much of the time after receiving his first
injury he was not able to do duty in the ranks, and was assigned to he surgeon's
department. For some time he was assistant to the field surgeon, and it was
while acting in this capacity that he received his third wound. He was
discharged at Atlanta, Ga., October 23, 1863. On his return from the south,
Mr. Brimhall came to State Centre and studied medicine, afterward engaging
in the drug business. He never practiced to any great extent, as his constantly
growing trade took all of his attention. When he began as a druggist it
was on a small scale, as he had only about $700, which he had saved while
in the army, but by close attention to the wants of his patrons he has acquired
a comfortable fortune. On the 10th of March, 1873, our subject was united
in marriage with Miss Luta, daughter of William Crum. She was born in
Pennsylvania, and is a lady of education and culture. Mr. And Mrs. Brimhall
have no children of their own, but have adopted a little girl seven years old
called Alice, of whom they are as fond as if she were actually their own.
Fraternally, Mr. Brimhall is a Mason and a prominent member of the Grand
Army of the Republic. In politics, he was first a Republican, casting his
first ballot for Lincoln. Later he became a Democrat, and at the present
time is affiliated with the People's party. He has always refused official
positions, but has served in the City Council.
