October Term 1868 p. 476 Oct - Petitioner, Springer S. Gibson (Jr.), shows that James G. Gibson, brother of petitioner, died intestate leaving a large estate both real & personal, & said estate is likely to suffer waste or loss before permanent letters [of administration] can be obtained, he therefore prays that temporary letters may be granted to him, and that citation be published.Ordered temporary letters do issue to said Petitioner upon his giving bond of two thousand dollars with M[ary] L. Gibson & W. T. Gibson as sureties.
Record Book A: Administrator Bonds p. 178 Oct 1868 - Springer S. Gibson, Principal, and W. L. Gibson & Mary T. Gibson, securities, are held & firmly bound unto S. A. Borders Ordinary of said County & his successors in the sum of two thousand dollars for temporary letters of Administration. The amount of $2,000 is not due the court as long as he conducts inventory & proper administration of the estate on or before the 1st Mon. in December next or soon after.
December Term 1868 p. 507 Dec - Springer S. Gibson was appointed letters of administration andadministrator of his brother�s estate. "and upon his giving bond for sixteen thousanddollars (!!) with G. W. West, Jas. S. Noyes, J. S. Brown, & Wm. P. Wood as his sureties& taking oath as required by law." Also, Springer was authorized and empowered to sell the personal property belonging to his brother�s estate.
Record Book A: Administrator Bonds p. 197 Dec 1868 - S. S. Gibson, Principal, & Geo. W. West, J. S. Noyes, J. Brown & Wm. P. Wood securities are held & firmly bound & obligated unto the Honorable the Ordinary of said Court for the time being & his successors in office in the sum of sixteen thousand dollars to be paid to said Ordinary, his successors in office or assigns.
If S. S. Gibson makes a true & perfect inventory of goods & chattels of said deceased,and do well & truly administer according to law & make a just account of his accountings &doings therein when required by the Ordinary of said Court, & if any last Will & Testament was made & same be proved & the executor obtain a certificate of probate thereof & said S. Sale Bill Book D p. 29Sept 1868 - Appraisement of the Estate of J. G. Gibson, Deceased [see copy infile]. Estate included 868 acres of land valued at $6,880, a "lot of cotton in fieldungathered," one lot of corn ungathered, a few hogs & horses. Total: $8,479.90.
p. 30Account of the sale of the Estate of J. G. Gibson, dec�d. Mrs. Gibson is listed ashaving purchased a wash pot for $3, a lot of jars for $3, a bucket for $2.5, stove &fixtures for $30, buggy & harness for $125. Other buyers included: Wm. Hurst, J. A. Peek, W. P. Wood, W. T. Gibson.

August Term 1869 p. 592 Aug - S. S. Gibson, Admnr. of J. G. Gibson Trust, filed his annual return for 1868.

Bunn & Hiram Phillips, securities, are held & firmly bound unto the Ordinary of said Court & his successors in office in the sum of twelve thousand dollars (!!) for the payment of which sum we bind ourselves, our heirs, executors & administrators, jointly & severally. Sealed with our seals & dated this 4th day of October 1869.
The condition of the above obligation is such that whereas Mary T. Gibson is this dayappointed guardian to Ellington, James G. and Hattie (?) Gibson, minor orphans of James G. Gibson, deceased, Now if the said Mary T. [11 Sep 1870 - the widow Gibson married Dr. James M. Trotter in Polk Co., GA. The girls were 11, 8 and 2 years old.]
February Term 1871 p. 78Upon the application of Springer S. Gibson, Administrator of J. G. Gibson, deceased, It is ordered by the Court that the said Admns. be & he is hereby authorized to appropriate for the purpose of supporting, clothing & educating the orphans of said deceased, there being three of them, from time to time as he can an amount not to exceed the sum of $500 for the year 1871. March Term 1871 p. 79George West filed a request to be relieved as surety for Springer S. Gibson.
April Term 1871 p. 80West�s request was approved and he was released.
p. 82We, Springer S. Gibson, as Principal, and Calvin Philpot, Joseph A. Blunce and Wm P. Wood, as securities, acknowledge ourselves held and bound to Marion Clark, Ordinary of said County, and his successors in office in the sum of Ten Thousand dollars subject to the following conditions. Whereas Springer S. Gibson has been appointed administrator on the estate of James G. Gibson deceased, Now should the said Springer S. Gibson well and truly administer all and singular the goods and chattels of the said deceased which may come into his hands, according to law and make a just and true account of his actings and doings therein when thereunto required by the superior court or the Ordinary aforesaid. And all the rest of the goods chattels and credits which shall be found remaining upon the account of the said administration, the same being first allowed by the Court of the Ordinary shall deliver and pay to such persons respectively as are entitled to the same by law. And if it shall hereafter appear that any last will and testament was made by the said deceased and the same be proven before the Court and the executors thereof obtain a certificate of the probate thereof and the same Springer S. Gibson to in such case if required render and deliver up the said letters of administration then this obligation to be void else of force, this Apr. 20 1871. [signed] S. S. August Term 1871 p. 84By the consent of Mrs. Mary T. Trotter & Springer S. Gibson Admnr. of J. G. Gibson, and it being the opinion of this Court that Mrs. Trotter should not pay said Admnr. rent on the land laid off as a Homestead for Mrs. Trotter & the children of J. G. Gibson, deceased. It is ordered & adjudged by the Court that Springer S. Gibson, Admnr, do enter a credit on the note of Mrs. Trotter given for rent for 1871 in the sum of $512.87 it being the amount pro rata of the ______[?illegible word!] rented & included in the homestead & that said admnr. be allowed credit in his accounts with that amount credited on said Note. January Term 1873 p. 108Mrs. Mary T. Trotter petitioned the Court for leave to sell a portion of the homestead land off & set apart for the use of her & her children by James G. Gibson and said portion to be about 40 acres, to pay debts and to reinvest. Approved by F. M. Clark, Ordinary.
p. 108S. S. Gibson, Admnr. of J. G. Gibson, deceased, shows that he has administered the said estate except some land, and he, for the purpose of settling up said estate in full prays that an order be issued appointing five discreet persons to divide the land between the heirs of said deceased. Court appointed A. R. Jones, J. A. Peek, L. H. Walthall, J. O. Waddell, & J. L. Brunch, or any three of them be & they are hereby appointed commissioners to lay off & divide all the land outside of the homestead unsold & belonging to said estate, between the heirs of J. G. p. 110To the Ordinary of Polk Co. Your petitioner L. H. Walthall respectfully represents that the minor orphans of James G. Gibson, deceased, Ellington, Jimmie & Clide, have no guardian on account of the marriage [over 2 years ago!] of their former Guardian, Mrs. Mary T. Gibson, and your petitioner asks that citation may issue and be published in order that he may be appointed Guardian for said minors according to law. Their estate is worth about two thousand dollars and your petitioner will as in duty bound ever pray &c. 25 Jan 1873. [signed] L. H. Walthall.

March Term 1873 p. 113L. H. Walthall applied for Letters of Guardianship of Ellington, Jimmie G. and Clide Gibson, minor orphans of James G. Gibson, Deceased. Citation to be published in the "Rome Courier."
April Term 1873 p. 117We, Julius A. Peek, A. R. Jones and L. H. Walthall Commissioners appointed by the Ordinary of Said County at the January Term of the Court to lay off and apportion the lands of J. G. Gibson deceased, between the Widow and Minor Children of said deceased, make the following apportionment.
We give the Widow Mrs. Mary Trotter Lot of land No. 483 [the late James G. Gibson inherited Lot 493 from his father; this may be an error] containing 40 acres & 19 acres of the west end of lot No. 633 or all that portion lying in the South West corner of said lot not covered by the Homestead except ten acres in the east end of the lot awarded to the children and about 15 acres of the west end of lot No. 635 or all that portion running from the N.W. corner of the homested due north to the line of said lot containing in the aggregate about 89 acres according to a recent survey.
We also award to the children about 37-1/2 acres of lot No. 662 or all that portion not covered by the homested and about 23-1/2 acres of lot No. 635 or all that portion lying east of Mrs. Trotters line and north of the homested line on said lot and ten acres of the east end or south east corner of lot No. 633 bounded on the east by William Wood north by the homested line & west by Mrs. Trotters line and all of lot No. 632, 526 & 522 all of said lots lying & being in the 2nd District & 4th Section and containing in the aggregate about one hundred and ninety one acres according to a recent Survey and which will more fully appear by the following plat. [all but Lot 522 were inherited by her late husband from his father]
In view of the hidden and unseen value of the ore or iron interest of Lot No. 662 we have thought proper not to make any division of that interest but let it remain as common property and wait further developments to show more fully its intrinsic value, all of which we respectfully submit this the 10th day of March 1873. It appearing to the Court that according to an order passes at the January Term last past at the instance of S. S. Gibson, Administrator of J. G. Gibson Deceased appointing Commissioners for the purpose of dividing the lands of said Deceased between the widow and minor children of the said J. G. Gibson, and it appearing by the return of L. H. Walthall, Julius A. Peek, and A. R. Jones a majority of said Commissioners so appointed, that they have proceeded to perform the said duties so assigned them in the order appointing them, It is therefore Ordered that the division and award made by said Commissioners be and the same is hereby approved and confirmed this April 7th 1873. [25 Jul 1873 - Dr. Trotter wrote his "cousins, nephews and nieces" from London, England. Refers to having spent 15 years and $23,000 of his money trying to claim the Trotter fortune.]
