I have no idea where he got the title of Colonel.
Events:
1. Will; 17 Dec 1866; Cedartown, Polk Co., GA. Last Will and Testament of one Springer Gibson of Polk Co., GA, in which he named his son James G. Gibson [named first, probably the eldest] his executor. Mr. Springer was a man of considerable wealth. To James he left "lots of land" numbered 632, 633, 634, 635, 636, 661, 662, 663, 491, 526, 493, and the north half of 664, all lying in the 2nd District of the 4th Section of originally Cherokee now Polk County. He directed that in the year of 1867 son James was to keep all his property together and to make a crop on his home place. He also provided for his sister, Caroline I. Winkfield, and stated that it was his desire that she "remain with the family of my son James G. Gibson and be supported by him during her life, if she so desires."
The will provided for his other children: Springer S., Will
iam F., Frances Elizabeth Wood, and grandchildren: William T. Gibson, Sarah Elizabeth Wood, and Arrabella A. Wood. There was no mention of nor provision for children of son James and his wife, Mary. One is left to wonder whether the elder Mr. Gibson did not approve of his son�s marriage, or perhaps Mary�s children were born of an earlier marriage? And yet he was generous with his bequests to James and entrusted to him the responsibility of Executor. Curious.
