Davis Gravesite

Davis Gravesite

Route 9N
Hague, Warren Co., NY

Date Last Updated: 11/05/2009

The Davis Gravesite is found in the woods east of Route 9N in Sabbath Day Point (Hague), Warren County, NY. It is located about 1/4th of a mile south of the scenic view at the foot of Tongue Mountain (or just up the mountain, near this road marker). The scenic view is a paved pull-out area with a Historical Marker.

From an old list of Hague Cemeteries:

"Located on R 9N, north side of Tongue Mountain, on right side coming down just before you reach the first house. One stone, "Jimmie" the Rattlesnake hunter, and he didn't get them all!"

The above narrative seems to be realistic when first viewing the gravesite - after leaving the main road and starting down the hill. However, once you reach the walled gravesite, the area opens up and daylight streams in, revealing two gravestones:

Reuben Davis Died June 8, 1857 AE 74

[unmarked footstone]

The stone wall surrounds an area large enough to contain several graves. You can easily observe an indentation in the ground next to Reuben's grave that would appear to be a second grave. One might assume Rueben's wife was buried next to him.
