The Hunter-Trader-Trapper was founded by Arthur R. Harding in 1900 primarily as a report on fur prices for trappers, traders, and exporters1. The March 1910 issue contained this article submitted by Eugene Doolittle:

HUNT OF THE HAGUE CLUB.

On the 17th of October our party of ten started on a hunting trip to Chain Lakes in Hamilton County for deer. There was in the party Richard Bolton, Jr., Supervisor of Hague, Charles Wheeler, Jim Leach, Elmer Decker, George Kanobe, Will Keenan, Glen Sherman, Fred Doolittle, Eugene Doolittle and Richard Bolton, of Horicon .

We were two days going into camp as the roads were terribly rough, and the last 8 or 10 miles we had to cross the Cedar River in a big scow boat. Well we arrived in camp about three o’clock, where we were welcomed by our host and guide, Hutchins, who were there last year.

The next morning we started out for deer. It is against the law to run a dog in this state, so some of us go on runways and in open places in the timber, and the guide and the rest of us went through the woods to act as dogs. Well that morning Jim killed a big buck. I shot at one and missed it. After dinner we went out again and run onto a big buck. Jim shot four times before he could say scat and the guide said he knew Jim had broke his gun.. Jim said he had broke two of his legs and shot him through the body, but we found no blood so I think he is alive yet.

The next day we got nothing and the next day we got two more big bucks, but the following day it rained most all day so we got nothing, and Saturday the leaves being wet we had great luck, getting three in the morning and one in the afternoon., all bucks. The next day we got a buck and two girls, who belonged to another party of six from this place but who were hunting with us killed a nice doe, one getting three shots and the other two, shooting it through the head. On Monday we got a doe, which was the first one for our party, making nine in all for us. The next morning we packed up and started for home, where we arrived in two days with as nice a bunch of buck as ever come to the city of Hague.

I am sending under separate cover a picture of our deer and the hunters, which I hope will find a place in your book. The names of the hunters from left to right are Charles Wheeler, George Kanobe, Jim Leach, Glen Sherman, Will Keenan, Fred Doolittle, Elmer Decker, Eugene Doolittle, Richard Bolton, Jr., and Richard Bolton.
