Garrett & Allen Families of
Shepton Beauchamp, Somerset, England

Garrett is the maiden surname of my maternal great-grandmother, who was born in Scotland and migrated to Australia in 1977 when she was 90 years of age. I have traced my Garrett ancestry to the village of Shepton Beauchamp in Somerset in England circa 1785. My branch of this family moved to London and then settled in Scotland. Known descendants are still residing in Scotland and also the USA and Australia.

St. Michael's - Shepton Beauchamp
Unfortunately, parish records for the timeframe of both Jonah Garret and Priscilla Allen's likely baptisms do not exist. To date, I have been unable to confirm the parentage of either, although both families do appear to have been settled in Shepton Beauchamp for some time. Likely parents have been identified, however not confirmed.
My direct line of descent is indicated in bold typeface.
First Generation

1. Jonah GARRETT
. Born Circa 1785 in Shepton Beauchamp, Somerset, ENGLAND. Died May 1817 in Shepton Beauchamp, Somerset, ENGLAND 5. Buried 1 Jun 1817 in Shepton Beauchamp, Somerset, ENGLAND 5. Occupation Labourer 5, Shoemaker 13.Unfortunately, there are no baptisms recorded in the Parish Registers for Shepton Beauchamp between 1778-1784 on LDS Reel 1526729.
It is possible that Jonah is the son of either William GARRAT and Mary DOWN who married on 9 Feb 1771 or Thomas GARRET and Mary NEWIS who were married on 29 Nov. 1779.
William and Mary had at least two children, baptised in 1770 and 1771, there are another three baptisms to William and Mary from 1786 to 1792, which includes two Benjamin's. Given that Jonah named his son, Benjamin, is this likely to be his family, or is this just co-incidence?
Jonah's wife, Priscilla, may have also had a brother named Benjamin, if she is the daughter of Robert Allen and Sarah Vile.
Jonah married Priscilla ALLEN, 16 Oct 1810 in Shepton Beauchamp, Somerset, ENGLAND
5. Born Circa 1785 in Shepton Beauchamp, Somerset, ENGLAND 17. Died After 1851. Occupation Glover 17.It is possible that Priscilla is the daughter of Robert ALLEN and Sarah VILE who were married at Shepton Beauchamp on 23 Dec 1780. Robert and Sarah had at least 5 other known children. If this is infact Priscilla's line of descent, this family can be traced back to the late 1600's at Shepton Beauchamp.
Priscilla and Jonah had the following children:
2 i. Robert GARRETT
3 ii. Sarah GARRETT
4 iii. Benjamin GARRETT
5 iv. Jonah GARRETT
Jonah was just 32 years of age when he died although the cause of death is not known at this time. His youngest son, also named Jonah was born 3 months after his father's death.
5Priscilla married her second husband,
John Attwell, two years after the death of her first husband. They had four children, although the second child, John died in infancy.John and Priscilla appear on the 1841 Census at Shepton Beauchamp, Somerset, England (LDS Reel 0474602). He is described as a 47 year old labourer, she a 56 year old Glover. Two of their children, Ann aged 13, a Glover and John aged 15 were also residing with them at the time. All were born in the county.
16By the time of the 1851 Census John and Priscilla were still residing at Shepton Beauchamp, Somerset, England (LDS Reel 0221084). At this time John was described as a 59-year-old agricultural labourer born in North Cadbury. Priscilla, aged 66 years was described as a Glover. Their daughter Ann Bryant, aged 27 was now a widow was residing with them with her 2-year-old daughter Henrietta. An Alfred HUTCHINGS, a visitor, aged 24 years, a Handloom Weaver, born Shepton Beauchamp was also in the home that evening.
17To date, a burial for Priscilla has not been located, however the Parish Register's have only been examined up to 1871.
A search of the National Index of the 1881 Census was unsuccessful, so it would seem most likely that Priscilla died some time prior to this.
Second Generation

2. Robert GARRETT
. Son of Jonah GARRETT & Priscilla ALLEN. Christen 15 Sep 1811 in Shepton Beauchamp, Somerset, ENGLAND 5. Buried 29 Sep 1811 in Shepton Beauchamp, SOM, ENGLAND 5.3. Sarah GARRETT. Daughter of Jonah GARRETT & Priscilla ALLEN. Christen 27 Dec 1812 in Shepton Beauchamp, Somerset, ENGLAND
5.She married Joseph BECK, 4 Oct 1832 in Shepton Beauchamp, SOM, ENGLAND
5.4. Benjamin GARRETT. Son of Jonah GARRETT & Priscilla ALLEN. Christen 17 Mar 1815 in Shepton Beauchamp, Somerset, ENGLAND
5. Died 10 Jan 1855 in Scutari, TURKEY 4. Occupation Private, Coldstream Guards 3.Benjamin's origins were difficult to determine. It was not known that he was of Somerset, until it was ascertained that his wife, Caroline was born there and surprisingly it was discovered that he too was baptised in the same parish. He was the third child of Jonah and Priscilla, however only his sister survived to adulthood. He did however have more brothers and sisters after his mother married John Attwell.
Unfortunately, it is not known when or when Benjamin joined the Coldstream Guards except that it was prior to his marriage in 1845 as he was described as a Private at this time. The witnesses to his marriage to Caroline Anstey were John Fletcher and Elizabeth Anstey, the latter most likely to be Caroline's sister.
Of Benjamin and Caroline's children it is understood that George and Barbara both died in March of 1854 of fever, however this has not been confirmed on the St. Catherine's House Indexes at this time. It is known that in addition to Albert, their eldest son, Benjamin married and lived in Glasgow. It is possible that the son, William George is the same one who died in 1854. It is not known what happened to the child, Thomas who was born in 1856.
Very little regarding Benjamin's military service is available however he did appear on the Muster Rolls for 1/10/1852 to 31/3/1853 (WO 12/1734). His Regimental Number was 2211. He was awarded the Crimea Medal with Alma and Inkerman Clasps on 20 September and 5 November respectively. Army Researcher, Len Metzner of London, kindly supplied these details.
The following information has been extracted from the World Atlas Encyclopedia regarding the Crimean War and specifically the Battles of Alma and Inkerman:
On 19 September the Allies started their march to Sebastopol. It was now seen how ill equipped the British were. Their ambulances had been left behind in Varna; the transport consisted mainly of carts obtained from nearby Tartar villages. That afternoon saw the first encounter with the Russians. A small body of some 2,000 cavalry appeared across a stream, the Bulganak. Lord Cardigan formed up his men for the attack but as he and Lord Lucan were about to embark on a lengthy quarrel Lord Raglan sent orders for the cavalry to retire. The Light Brigade were furious and nicknamed Lucan 'Lord Look-on:, interpreting the orders as his own.
The allies had now reached the River Alma. On the heights across the river was the Russian Army. They had prepared themselves for the encounter and were fully confident that from their position they could repulse the invaders.
The next morning the French had to wait for the British to straighten themselves out and it was not until 11 o'clock in the morning that the order could be given for an advance. The first line forded the shallow river and succeeded in gaining the heights but their casualties were so great that they could not hold off the Russian counter-attacks. It was the timely arrival of Sir Colin Campbell and his staunch Highlanders who formed part of the second line, together with the Guards Brigade, that saved the day.
As the Guards came up the hill the Russians poured shot and shell into them. Wide gaps appeared as the men fell, but they closed up their ranks and came relentlesly on. As they drew near the top, faltering under the ceaseless fire, the Highlanders appeared on the Russians' right flank. This was too much for the Russians; they broke and flex. The cavalry had been standing by all day and now was their great moment to pursue the fleeing enemy. Lord Raglan, however, felt he could not risk even their smallest loss and held them back. They had to stand and watch as the entire Russian army streamed away in disorder towards the shelter of Sebastopol.
Had the Allies attacked Sebastopol immediately there can be little doubt that it would have fallen to them. But the French maintained that they were too tired. By 24 September, the Allies were still four miles from the town, by which time the Russians had re-formed themselves...
On 25 October ... the order was given ... to Lord Cardigan to charge the guns with the Light Brigade. The order was carried out with a perfection worthy of a parade ground... The Brigade charged over the Russian guns and the cavalry beyond them but were then trapped inside the Russian lines. Of the 670 who charged fewer than 200 escaped... The charge gave victory to neither side and the Allies still held their positions but the Russians had command of the Voronzov Road which was to make such difficulties in bringing up ammunitions an supplies during the long, hard winter.
The siege dragged on. On 5 November the Battle of Inkerman was fought. The Russians had amassed an army twice the size of the British and French put together and were now confident that they could roll up the invading armies once and for all. under cover of a think fog, they crossed the valley of the Tchernaya River and crept up the slopes to the British positions where they took them by complete surprise. It is one of the most confusing and bloody battles in British history. In the fog all order was lost and it was the dogged character of the British infantryman and the timely arrival of a small force of French which saved the day. Nevertheless, to Lord Raglan it was a disaster. The losses he suffered that day put the seal on the winter campaign.
The winter set in. The cold and misery in the British camp are now legendary. The supplies so desperately needed did not arrive until the spring, when, as in the case of warm clothes, they were of no use. The men's diet, which for months consisted of salt pork and green coffee berries, brought on the dreaded scurvy. The nurses who brought such relief only came after the winter was over, and for months the regimental hospitals were little more than charnel houses... The war dragged on until the 8 September when the British and French made their final assault on Sebastopol.
The Crimea Medal was issued between 1854 and 1856. The following information is from Ribbons and Medals by H. Taprell Dorling.
The obverse of this medal bears the head of Queen Victoria, the usual wording, and the date '1854'. The reverse shows as flying figure of Victory crowning with a laurel wreath a Roman warrior armed with a shield and sword. The word CRIMEA is inscribed vertically on the left. The medal is hung from its ribbon by an ornamental foliated clasp, and its issue, with bars inscribed, INKERMAN and ALMA for those two battles, was authorised in December 1854, while the Crimean War was yet in progress. Subsequent orders, however, authorised additional bars being granted for BALAKLAVA and SEBASTOPOL, while another AZOFF, was awarded to the Navy for the operations in the Sea of Azoff. Medals with the BALAKLAVA bar awarded to the 17th Lancers, 13th Light
Dragoons, 11th Hussars, 4th Light Dragoons and the 8th Hussars, are most highly prized by collectors on account of the historic charge of the Light Brigade. The bars for the Crimean medal are in the form of oak leaves, with the name of the engagement in raised letters. The medal was also given to some of the French soldiers who fought as our Allies during the campaign; these are sometimes found with French bars ... Most recipients of the Crimea Medal also received the Turkish Medal for the Crimea.
Family papers indicate that Benjamin died of dysentery at Scutari Hospital in Turkey two months after the Battle of Inkerman. Unfortunately, there is no record of his death on the St. Catherine's House indexes, nor is there any record at the Public Record Office.
He married
Caroline ANSTEY, daughter of John ANSTEY & Barbara, 24 Nov 1845 in St. Marys Church, Paddington, London, ENGLAND 3. Christen 8 Feb 1820 in Shepton Beauchamp, Somerset, ENGLAND 5. Died 14 Jul 1883 in Perth, Perthshire, SCOTLAND 2. Buried 16 Jul 1883 in Wellshill Cemetery, Perth, SCOTLAND 4.Caroline's is one of four known children of John Anstey and his wife Barbara. She was the only one of their children to be baptised at Shepton Beauchamp in Somerset. At the time of her baptism, her father was described as a Publican. There is no further record of this family at Shepton Beauchamp.
Whilst Caroline married Benjamin Garrett, also a native of Shepton Beauchamp at St. Marys Church in London in 1845 it is not known whether they knew each other prior to this. Both gave their residence at the time of their marriage as Hermitage St. It is possible that Caroline has followed Benjamin to London after he has joined the Coldstream Guards. If her family were still residing at Shepton Beauchamp, it seems unlikely that no further record of any family members appear in the Parish Registers during this period, particularly in 1841 at the time of the census. An Elizabeth Anstey (along with John Fletcher) was a witness at their marriage, and it is likely that she is Caroline's sister, although it is possible she is the wife of her brother, James.
3Benjamin and Caroline had the following children:
6 i. Benjamin GARRETT
7 ii. William George GARRETT
8 iii. George GARRETT
9 iv. Barbara GARRETT
10 v. Albert GARRETT
11 vi. Thomas William GARRETT
Following her husband's death in 1855, it appears that Caroline had another, child, Thomas William who was baptised in May, 1856.
7 It is quite possible that he is infact the son of William John Trotter whom she married later that year 22. Caroline and her second husband, William left London and settled in Perth, Scotland. They appear to have had another child named Thomas, however he died in 1867 at 8 years of age of convulsive fits 4. Very little is known of William John Trotter, except that he was a painter and that he died suddenly in 1878. 4Caroline is listed on the 1881 Census at 39 Watergate, Perth as Caroline Trotter aged 63 years, and she is described as a Painter's widow and was born in Somerset, England.
20 (LDS Reel 0203512).Caroline died two years later in 1883 at the same address of heart disease. Her son, Albert, who was living in Glasgow at the time, was the informant. He gave Caroline's husband's occupation as shoemaker, and her father's as Innkeeper
2. Caroline was buried as a pauper along with at least six others at Wellshill Cemetery in Perth, Scotland. 425. Jonah GARRETT

Albert was born at 26 Little Chapel Street in London, the fifth child of Benjamin and Caroline Garrett. His mother was the informant and gave her address at the time as Cavendish Square, St. Marylebone.
1Like his father before him, Albert never knew his father, as he died six months after his birth. As Benjamin was fighting in the Crimea, it is not known when he actually left England. Despite being born in England Albert was basically raised in Scotland as his mother and her second husband, William Trotter moved to Perth some time after their marriage in 1856.
Albert maintained a record of family events and fortunately this has survived to this day. Many of the events he has recorded have not yet been substantiated; however, I can see no reason to doubt the accuracy of these records.
Of Albert's brother and sisters, it is known that George and Barbara both died of fever in Berkely St, London in 1854. Whether George is infact, the same as William George who was baptised in 1849 with Benjamin is not known for certain. In his records Albert refers to Ben and also makes reference to his half-brother Thomas, he also refers to a James Garrett who "came home from Campsie in 1881" - unfortunately, it is not known at this time, who James was.
Albert appeared on the 1881 Census at 3 Black St, Glasgow, where he was described as a boarder, aged 26, Printers Compositor, born England. He was residing in the home of Joseph Buxton who has been mentioned in family papers as a family friend.
20 (LDS Reel 0203649)The index to the 1881 Census, records Joseph as James (Jas.) and Albert by the surname, GARETH.
38He married
Martha STEWART, daughter of Shaw STEWART & Mary McLELLAND, 6 Apr 1881 in Glasgow, Lanarkshire, SCOTLAND 3. Christen 6 May 1852 in Inch, Wigtownshire, SCOTLAND 28. Died 18 Jul 1903 in Glasgow, Lanarkshire, SCOTLAND 4. Occupation Cotton Winder 3. Religion Presbyterian.Martha was baptised 110 years exactly before the birth of her great-great grand-daughter, Vicki Hails. Martha's parentage has been difficult to determine, as her parents were married some 18 years prior to her baptism and appear to have moved from Glasgow to Wigtonshire. Unfortunately, they have not as yet been identified on any Census records.
In addition to her known siblings, Martha may have also had brothers named Shaw and James, and a sister named Rose. There is a marriage record on the IGI for a Rose Ann STEWART to a Samuel COCHRANE dated 11 Nov 1867, Central District, Glasgow, Lanarkshire. The Cochrane family (specifically Sam and Rose) are referred to in notes kept by Albert Garrett.
Thomas Crawford, a family friend and Mary Russell witnessed Albert and Martha's marriage. Albert and Martha were residing at 3 and 11 Black St, Glasgow, respectively. Both Martha's parents were deceased at this time, as was Albert's father, Benjamin.
3At the time of the 1881 Census, Martha was not living at the 11 Black St address given at the time of her marriage, however Peter Drummond and his wife Agnes were residing at this address. Albert Garrett has made many references to the Drummond family, a Peter Drummond being a 'cousin', however their exact relationship to the Garrett's and Stewart's is not known at this time. 4
Martha has since been identified on the 1881 Census via the index. She was actually residing with Samuel Cochrane and his wife Rose Ann and was described, as Samuel's sister in law, confirming previous belief that Rose was infact Martha's sister. Their address at this time was 133 Springburn Rd. Martha was described as being unmarried, 27 years of age, born in Stranraer and her occupation was given as Threadmill Worker. Unfortunately, Martha's son, James was not residing with them at the time, and an extensive search of the 1881 Census Index has failed to locate a suitable entry for him.
38Albert and Martha had the following children:
12 i. James STEWART
13 ii. Albert Anstey GARRETT
14 iii. Mary McClelland GARRETT
15 iv. William Anstey GARRETT
16 v. Caroline Anstey GARRETT
17 vi. Martha Stewart GARRETT
18 vii. Elizabeth Scotland Ronald GARRETT
19 viii. George Anstey GARRETT
At the time of the 1891 Census, Albert and his family were residing at 184 Parliamentary Rd, Glasgow, he was aged 36, a Printer Compositor, born in England. His wife, Martha, also aged 36 was born at Stranraer, Wigton. Their children included James, aged 13, Message boy, born Paisley, Renfrew, Mary McL, William A., Caroline A., and Martha S. were all born in Glasgow.
21 (LDS Film 0220288)Alberts papers refer not only to the GARRETT family, but also the DRUMMONDS (cousins and an aunt, Jane), COCHRAN, MOFFATT, BUXTON, WILSON, WATSON and KERNS.
It is probable that the COCHRAN's and WATSON's were the married names of Martha's sisters, Rose and Agnes. It is not known if the DRUMMOND's were relatives of the GARRETT's or STEWART's. Although an entry on the 1891 Census did reveal a Jane McLAREN with a niece named Jane DRUMMOND at 169 Dobbies Loan (an address also referred to by Albert).
Martha was just 49 years old when she died in 1903 of Phthisis (consumption) at 20 Charlotte St, Port Dundas, Glasgow. The informant was her husband, Albert.
2In his later life, Albert resided with his daughter, Caroline and her family at 117 McAslin St, Glasgow and died in 1939 a few days before his 85th birthday.
11. Thomas William GARRETT. Son of Benjamin GARRETT & Caroline ANSTEY. Christen 17 May 1856 in St. Bartholomew, Moor Lane, London, ENGLAND

Fourth Generation

12. James STEWART
. Son of Albert GARRETT & Martha STEWART. Born 16 May 1877 4 in Paisley, Renfrewshire, SCOTLAND 21.Albert supposedly adopted James, however he was always referred to by the surname Stewart, as are his descendants.
He may be the one referred to as "James S. Garrett came home from Campsie on July 16th, 1881" in Albert's notes. It is noted that James was not living with his mother at the time of the 1881 Census and that the 1891 Census indicated that he was born in Paisley. Despite this, he has still not been identified on the 1881 Census.
He married Kate MOFFATT and they had the following children:
20 i. Thomas STEWART
21 ii. James STEWART
22 iii. Caroline STEWART

Alexander and his family remained in Stevenston for several years, however were living in Glasgow by 1919 when their daughter Elizabeth "Wee Cissie" died. It is believed they returned to Glasgow at the end of the war. The family resided at 117 Albert St, Townhead, however the street name was later changed to McAslin St.
Upon their return to Glasgow, Alexander was employed as a Stationary/Book Packer.
Caroline's father, Albert Garrett came to live with the family during the 1920's and remained there until his death in 1939.
Alexander died in 1949 at 63 years of age at the family home in McAslin St, and is buried in Lair No. 1531 at Riddrie Park Cemetery in Glasgow, together with his father-in-law, Albert Garrett.
42Caroline resided at Kirkgate in Saltcoats with her sister, Elizabeth "Lizzie" after the death of Lizzie's husband. When Lizzie died in 1977, Caroline's daughter, Helen (who had also just lost her husband earlier that year) returned to Scotland to bring her mother back to Australia with her.

Caroline's three grand-daughters, June, Carol and Irene (and two of their husbands, Barry and Colin) and her two grandsons, Robert and Richard were also present at her birthday celebrations. Her daughters Helen and Caroline were residing at Merrylands, not Guildford. Caroline had met all her grandchildren previously, the four eldest were infact born in Scotland. She had not however met any of her great grandchildren prior to migrating to Australia.
The following telegram was received from the Queen of England, Elizabeth R.:
I am very pleased to hear that you are celebrating your one hundredth birthday. I send you many congratulations on this happy occasion and my good wishes for an enjoyable day. Elizabeth R.

They rented rooms out to another family whom they had met on the voyage out to Australia. When Bob's brother Jim immigrated several years later, he and his family also lived with them.
After several years in Australia, Helen and the children returned to Scotland in 1955 on the "Seven Seas". Bob followed shortly after staying to sell the family home. Helen returned to Scotland in 1963 for a holiday. She travelled with her son Richard, via the USA where she met up her sister, Caroline, who travelled to Scotland with her. Her husband, Bob upon her return wrote the following poem:
Bonnie Nellie's coming back
She'll soon by on the joyful track
Bound for Australia's sunny strands
To 19 Lamb Crescent, Merrylands
She'll sail across to old Biscay Bay
And down the Med to Napoli
Back to Egypt's mystic shore
Where Nellie's walked the streets before
She'll see the rocks of Aden Grey
And then Colombo across the bay
But the fondest sight that Nell will see
Will be Old Rab at Circular Quay.
In the early 1970's Helen and Bob again visited Scotland and the US after her sister Caroline and her husband had retired to Florida.
Bob died of a heart attack at Merrylands Railway Station on his way to work just two days after his 63rd birthday and was cremated at Rookwood Crematorium.
