Jestico Family of Goodworth Clatford, Hampshire, England

Joseph Jestico is my 5xgreat grandfather and has been traced to the English village of Goodworth Clatford in the late 18th century. My direct line of descent is noted in bold typeface.

First Generation

1. Joseph JESTICO.

Joseph and Elizabeth had 12 children who were all baptised at Goodworth Clatford between 1771 and 1792. The first five children were baptised as GESTICO, the latter as JESTICO. Their marriage in 1770 was recorded as JESTICO on the IGI.

The actual Parish Registers have not yet been consulted.

While the name JESTICO is relatively uncommon, there are no Joseph entries on the IGI prior to Joseph's marriage, so the origins of this name have not yet been determined. There is only one other JESTICO family in this time period and they were residing at South Bersted, Sussex.

He married Elizabeth MARSHMAN, 21 May 1770 in Upper Clatford, Hampshire, ENGLAND 8. A likely baptism for Elizabeth has not been found.

They had the following children:

2 i. John JESTICO

3 ii. Elizabeth JESTICO

4 iii. James JESTICO

5 iv. Mary JESTICO

6 v. Sarah JESTICO

7 vi. Thomas JESTICO

8 vii. Hannah JESTICO

9 viii. Joseph JESTICO

10 ix. Richard JESTICO

Second Generation

2. John JESTICO. Son of Joseph JESTICO & Elizabeth MARSHMAN. Christen Feb 1771 in Goodworth Clatford, Hampshire, ENGLAND 8.

John's baptism was recorded as GESTICO.

It is possible that John moved to London and married an Elizabeth. There are baptism records on the IGI for this couple who had two children baptised at St. Andrews, Holborn, namely John Samuel in 1793 and Joseph in 1794. The latter died as an infant.

3. Elizabeth JESTICO. Daughter of Joseph JESTICO & Elizabeth MARSHMAN. Christen 23 Sep 1772 in Goodworth Clatford, Hampshire, ENGLAND 8.

Elizabeth's baptism was recorded as GESTICO.

4. James JESTICO. Son of Joseph JESTICO & Elizabeth MARSHMAN. Christen Nov 1774 in Goodworth Clatford, Hampshire, ENGLAND 8.

James' baptism was recorded as GESTICO.

5. Mary JESTICO. Daughter of Joseph JESTICO & Elizabeth MARSHMAN. Christen 27 Nov 1776 in Goodworth Clatford, Hampshire, ENGLAND 8.

Mary's baptism was recorded as GESTICO.

Sarah's baptism was recorded as GESTICO.

She married Thomas HOLMES, 19 Apr 1806 in Goodworth Clatford, Hampshire, ENGLAND 63.

Sarah had at least two children prior to marrying Thomas HOLMES, although it is possible she is also the mother of a child named Matilda who was baptised on 30 Jun 1805 - unfortunately, no parents are recorded, as she was the only JESTICO having children at that time 63.

Her children include:

14 i. Thomas JESTICO

15 ii. James JESTICO

16 iii. Elizabeth HOLMES

17 iv. Mary HOLMES

18 v. Martha HOLMES

7. Thomas JESTICO. Son of Joseph JESTICO & Elizabeth MARSHMAN. Christen 4 Feb 1780 in Goodworth Clatford, Hampshire, ENGLAND 8.

Hannah, the seventh of Joseph and Elizabeth's children was baptised twice, the first, a private baptism took place on 28 Oct, 1781 and the second, a public baptism took place a week later on 4 Nov, 1781. The Church Wardens were William Welch and Joseph Goater. 86

Hannah married Thomas YEELES, 21 Jan 1815 in St. Leonards, Shoreditch, London, ENGLAND 6. Occupation Leather Dresser/Labourer/Engineer 13, 86.

According to the Bishops Transcripts of St. Leonard's Shoreditch, Thomas and Hannah were married by George Hendricks, curate in the presence of George Limming and Sarah Wood. 86

They had the following children:

19 i. William YEELES

20 ii. Elizabeth YEELES

21 iii. Thomas YEELES

22 iv. Fanny YEELES

Thomas was living at the time of his son, William's marriage in 1840 and also at the time of the 1841 Census when he was living in Salisbury Lane (now Wilson St) with his wife Hannah. He was aged 71 and Hannah 61 years, neither being born in the county. At this time Thomas was described as a Labourer. 86

Hannah died in 1842 at Salisbury Lane, Bermondsey, London. 86

Martha may be the one who married Robert BARKER, on 9 Mar 1828, at Saint John The Evangelist, Lambeth, Surrey, England 63.

He married Fanny and they had the following children:

He married Mary STORY, 9 Jun 1840 in St. Mary Magdalene, Bermondsey, London, ENGLAND 7.

20. Elizabeth YEELES. Daughter of Thomas YEELES & Hannah JESTICO. Christen 10 Aug 1817 in St. Mary Magdalene, Bermondsey, London, ENGLAND 7.

She married William COWLEY, 26 Apr 1838 in St. Mary Magdalene, Bermondsey, London, ENGLAND 7.

No further record of Elizabeth and her likely husband, William Cowley has been found, although an Elizabeth Cowley of similar age has been identified on the 1881 Census, however she is the wife of Charles Cowley. They were residing at 5b Clifton Square, Camberwell, Surrey. He was a Solicitor's Clerk. 38

21. Thomas YEELES. Son of Thomas YEELES & Hannah JESTICO. Christen 24 Jan 1819 in St. Mary Magdalene, Bermondsey, London, ENGLAND 7.

22. Fanny YEELES. Daughter of Thomas YEELES & Hannah JESTICO. Christen 12 Mar 1820 in St. Mary Magdalene Bermondsey, London, ENGLAND 6.

Fanny is the youngest of Thomas and Hannah's four known children.

She married Anthony COOPER, son of James COOPER, 16 Oct 1842 in St. John's, Southwark, London, ENGLAND 22. Born Before 18213. Occupation Carpenter 3 /Gentleman's Coachman13.

Anthony and Fanny were married in the Parish Church of St. John, Southwark in London. Both were of full age, meaning they were over 21 years. He was gave his profession as a carpenter, his father, James Cooper was a cordwainer, and her father, Thomas Yeeleas, an engineer. Fanny signed the register, while Anthony signed with his mark. Witnesses to their marriage were John and Sarah HURLEY (?).

They had the following children:

i. Elizabeth Catherine COOPER

ii. James Anthony COOPER

iii. Sarah Ann COOPER

iv. William Thomas COOPER

At the time of the 1851 Census Fanny has been identified at 9 Haples Rents, Rotherhithe, London (LDS Reel 0174819), she was described as the head of the household, aged 31 years and born in Bermondsey. Also residing with her were her children: Catherine COOPER, daughter, 7 yrs, born Bermondsey and James COOPER, son, 2 yrs, born Newington. Her husband has not been identified anywhere on this census at this time.

At her daughter Sarah's birth, Fanny's maiden surname was recorded as YEELEAS.

It would seem most likely that both Anthony and Fanny were deceased at the time of the 1881 Census Index. They were not found on either the Middlesex of Surrey listings. Although an entry for a 62-year-old Fanny Cooper who was born in Bermondsey was found, her husband's name was Edward Cooper and he was described as a Supert of Shipping. 38
