The Martin family has been traced back to the town of Bangor in County Down, Northern Ireland.

My branch of the family appear to have migrated to Scotland on two occasions, once during the 1870's for a period of about 10 years after which they returned to Bangor, and then again in the early 1900's. Several members of the family then migrated to Australia in the 1950's.
My direct line of descent through this family is noted in bold typeface.

1. John MARTIN
. Born Circa 1819 15. Died 1905/1906 50. Buried in Bangor Abbey Graveyard, Co. Down, NORTHERN IRELAND. Occupation Blacksmith 13.He married Jane BROWN and they had the following children:
2 i. Robert MARTIN
John may be the retired blacksmith aged 82 who was also a widow, residing in the home of Edwin Burns and his family as a lodger at the time of the 1901 Census. He was a Protestant, could read and write and was born in Down.
15The death of an 87 year old, John Martin has been noted on the Irish Death Indexes in the 1st Q. 1906 at Newtownards.
50There is also a headstone in the Bangor Abbey Graveyard for a John Martin who died on 27th January 1905 aged 88 years. However, the headstone makes reference to the following:
his father, James who died 23 Oct, 1857, aged 78 years.
his mother, Ann who died 4 May, 1861, aged 78 years.
his wife, Isabella who died 30 April, 1878, aged 59 years.
his sister, Mary Ann who died 18 July, 1900, aged 78 years.
Unfortunately, if this is the same "John" - Robert's mother's name was given as Jane Brown at the time of his marriage in Glasgow, in 1870 - unless Jane died and Isabella was John's second wife ?

2. Robert MARTIN
. Son of John MARTIN & Jane BROWN. Born Circa 1848 3. Died 1901 50. Occupation Weaver 3. Religion Wesleyan 3.Robert may be the son of John Martin, the 82 year old Retired Blacksmith, a widower who was living Ballymagee St, Bangor at the time of the 1901 Census. It is believed that he may also be the 87 year old whose death was registered at Newtownards in the 1st Quarter, 1906 and or the one who was buried at Bangor Abbey Graveyard in 1905.
He married Sarah BAILLIE, daughter of Robert BAILLIE & Mary Jane McKIE, 3 Jun 1870 in High Church, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, SCOTLAND
3. Born Circa 1849 in Newtownards, Co. Down, NORTHERN IRELAND 15. Died 3 Aug 1907 in Newtownards, Co. Down, NORTHERN IRELAND 2. Occupation Cotton Mill Worker 3. Religion Wesleyan 3/Church Of Ireland 15.At the time of his marriage, Robert was living at 21 Savoy St, Bridgeton, Glasgow. His marriage certificate indicates that he was born c1848, however his place of birth is not known. His father, John was described as a Master Blacksmith. His mother's maiden name was given as Jane Brown. Witnesses to their marriage were William McCANN and Margaret STEVENSON.
3At the time of her marriage in 1870, Sarah was living at 27 Main St, Bridgeton, Glasgow. Her marriage certificate indicated that she was born c1849, which was consistent with details given on the 1901 Census. Her father, Robert Baillie was described as a Hostler and her mother's name was given as Mary Jane McKIE or McVEE. 3
Robert and Sarah had the following children:
3 i. Jane MARTIN
4 ii. Elizabeth MARTIN
5 iii. Robert MARTIN
6 iv. John MARTIN
7 v. Sarah MARTIN
8 vi. James MARTIN
Robert and Sarah were not residing at 21 Savoy St at the time of the 1871 Census (LDS Reel 0104022). The head of this address was Ellen Grahame a 64-year-old widow, a native of Co. Antrim in Ireland who was a winder. Lodging at this address were several Cotton Weavers, also from Co. Antrim and the families of Hugh Kain, a Cotton Winder and native of Co. Down and John Gilmour, a Night Watchman and native of Ireland. 19
Unfortunately, the family cannot be identified on the 1881 Census Index, so it would seem most likely that they had returned to Ireland by this time.
The following is a family legend written by Robert's grandson, William Martin in 1971:
Robert MARTIN, son of Blacksmith. Travelled all over Ireland selling cloth or material made from the weaving machine operated by his wife. Settled in Glasgow. He had four sons and two daughters. Most of whom settled in Stevenston, Ayrshire and in Kilwinning, Ayrshire.
Jim MARTIN youngest son of Bob MARTIN, married Margaret CONWAY, daughter of Bob CONWAY. Bob CONWAY had a good position as (Station Master silk top hat and all) in the Bangor County Down Railway, unfortunately because of the demon drink had to seek employment elsewhere, Came to Scotland, was employed with Nobels' Explosive Co. later to become the I.C.I and rose to the position of Superintendent. He and his wife who wore crutches owing to a bad fall and lack of proper medical treatment, had six children 3 boys and 3 girls the oldest girl Meg or Margaret became the wife of James or Jim MARTIN the youngest son of Bob MARTIN.
Jim MARTIN apparently was not liked by Bob CONWAY and though times were bad for Maggie and Jim as they were called, they received little or no help from Bob. Jim and Maggie had 3 sons and 2 daughters. The three boys spent their earlier life in Scotland. Will married Elizabeth PALMER daughter of Bob and Meg PALMER. Bob was a Master Builder and he and his sons formed a building firm of PALMER BROS, KILWINNING. Will MARTIN was called to serve in World War II, after the war became interested in politics joined the local Labor Party and was elected to town council, and ultimately became the chairman. Will and Liz had two sons and adopted a baby girl and called her Karen. The family immigrated to Australia to join the eldest son Jim who had married an Ardrossan girl named Marie McKENZIE. Marie her baby son Jim, Karen, Conway, and Liz and Bill MARTIN sailed out to Australia together as indicated above Liz and Bill MARTIN have now 4 grandchildren at this time Xmas 1971. Jim and Marie have three children and Conway and his wife have one. Bob MARTIN born 1914 married Nell McDUGALD (sic) immigrated to Australia has 5 children, 3 girls and 2 boys, Jim MARTIN born 1916 married Lorraine immigrated to Australia they have one daughter.
Will MARTIN the author of this record is employed by the Dept. Child Welfare as a Manager and his wife Liz as Matron.
Bob MARTIN is employed by Stevedoring Co. as a Wharfie;
Jim MARTIN is employed by Harland & Wolf as a Plumber/Pipebender.
Sarah and Reta (sic) sisters of the above are both married and living in the UK.
Although some information in the above 'legend' would seem accurate, little credence is given to its reliability and it has not been used for the basis of any research.
Another family 'legend' is that Robert was actually killed in a pub brawl. To date, this has not been proven or disproved.
A search of the Irish BDM Indexes for the period 1901-1912 revealed several Robert Martin deaths during this period, however the most likely candidate being the registration in Belfast of a 52 year old in 2nd Quarter, 1901.
50Sarah and three children have been identified on the 1901 Census at Conlig, Bangor, Co. Down, Northern Ireland (LDS Reel 0830514). Their details are as follows:
Sarah MARTIN, wife, Church of Ireland, Could not Read/Write, 52 yrs, married, born Newtownards, Down.
John MARTIN, son, Could not Read or Write, 22 yrs, Railway Labourer, unmarried, born Glasgow, Scotland.
James MARTIN, son, Read/Write, 11 yrs, Scholar, born Conlig.
Jane MARTIN, grand-daughter, 4 yrs, Scholar, born Conlig.
Although her husband, Robert could not be identified, Sarah's son Robert and his wife Sarah are also noted on this census.
This information led to the discovery that Sarah and her husband had infact married in Glasgow, Scotland and that their elder children were born there also.
Sarah died of apoplexy o 3 Aug 1907 at Mill Street, Newtownards. At the time she was described as the widow of a van driver. The informant, who was present at her death, was Jane BLADY who signed with her mark. It is possible this is Sarah's eldest daughter.

Robert travelled extensively, both prior to and after his marriage. He was involved with the International Brigade during the Spanish Civil War during the 1930's and was taken prisoner after the ship on which he was travelling was sunk.
The following appeared in the Glasgow newspaper "Evening News" dated 5 August, 1937:
BELLSHILL GIRL IN SPAIN - REPORTED RELEASE FROM PRISON
A report announcing the release of Ethel McDonald, a Bellshill woman, said to have been imprisoned in Barcelona, was received by her parents, Mr and Mrs McDonald, last night.
The story of Miss McDonald's release was given by Robert Martin, of Glencairn Street, Stevenston, Ayrshire, who out to join the International Brigade on May 30.
The ship on which martin crossed to Spain is said to have been torpedoed, and he himself taken to Barcelona and imprisoned there.
According to Martin, Miss McDonald was kept in prison for four days, and then released.
Following their marriage, Robert and Helen lived with Robert's family at "Seaview" in Stevenston until the family moved to Kilwinning Rd in the 1940's and later Robert and Helen had their own home at 6 Ashgrove Ave, Stevenston.
Robert migrated to Australia in 1950 on the "Cheshire" which arrived in Sydney on the 21 August. The "Cheshire" had sailed from Liverpool via Freemantle and Melbourne. Robert gave his address in Sydney as 2 Gap Road, Watson's Bay although at this time, it is not known who he was living with at this address. On his application for assisted passage, Robert indicated that he had a second cousin, the Reverend William Cowan, living at The Manse in Killarney in Queensland. He also indicated on his application that he had previously visited Perth, Western Australia in 1946 on holiday. He resided in Ontario, Canada between 1934 and 1936 and was working in Persia for the ICI from 1944 to 1945.
Although Robert bought a house in Zetland, Sydney, according to his application for assisted passage, it would appear that he had intended to settle in Queensland. Once settled, Robert sent for Helen and the children, however, as Helen was by then expecting their fourth child, Robert, they had to wait until after his birth before sailing in 1951 on board the "Ormandie" arriving in Sydney on 19 July.
Robert and Helen lived at 219 Elizabeth St, Zetland an inner city suburb of Sydney. They rented rooms out to another family whom Helen had met on the voyage out to Australia. Later when Robert's brother Jim migrated he and his family also lived with Robert and Helen at their Zetland home.
After several years in Australia, Helen and the children returned to Scotland in 1955 on the "Seven Seas". Robert followed shortly after staying on to sell the family home. However, upon returning to Scotland, they decided to make their home permanently in Australia and returned in the same year. Robert and June travelled a few months earlier on the "Strathnaver" and Helen, Carol, Irene and Bob on the "Strathaird".
When Robert and Helen returned to Scotland in 1955, they lived with Helen's mother and aunt, at Kirkgate in Saltcoats, Ayrshire.
When the family returned to Australia in 1955 they lived at 15 Lillian St, Berala where their daughter Carol met her future husband, Colin Hails whose family also resided at Berala.
Robert and Helen lost all their money in a land swindle in 1957. In 1958 they moved to 479a Housing Settlement, Riverwood prior to purchasing their own home at 19 Lamb Cres, Merrylands in 1962. Their sons, Robert and Richard now own this house and it is still home to their son, Robert.
Robert died of a heart attack at Merrylands Railway Station on his way to work just two days after his 63rd birthday and was cremated at Rookwood Crematorium. His daughter, June Bancroft wrote the following poem in memory of her father:
Some people come into this world
And one day quietly pass away
We wouldn't even know they're here
So insignificant are they.
My father he was different
A cheery noisy man
And if you didn't like him
He didn't give a dam.
He lived life to the fullest
He'd been most everywhere
Just name a foreign country
He's sure to have been there.
A rebel to society
Yet he loved his fellow man
To anyone who needed him
He'd lend a helping hand.
He dearly loved to argue
And he would always win
For no matter what we had to say
We couldn't out talk him.
He loved to sing and tell a joke
Speak to strangers in the street
I feel real sorry for
Those folks he didn't get to meet.
So I write this poem
And for what it's worth
I am proud to say my father
Left his stamp upon this earth.
And if there is a heaven
I see him large as life and full of fun
Telling God and all the Angels
Just how things should be done.
He married
Helen Forrest McDOUGALL, daughter of Alexander Murray McDOUGALL & Caroline Anstey GARRETT, 25 Dec 1938 in Glasgow, SCOTLAND 3. Born 6 Jul 1915 in Stevenston, Ayrshire, SCOTLAND 1. Helen was 24 years old when she married Bob on Christmas Eve at the Registry in Glasgow in 1938. The witnesses to their marriage were Robert's brother, William and Helen's sister, Caroline.
After migrating to Australia in the 1950's, Helen returned to Scotland in 1963 for a holiday. She travelled with her son Richard, via the USA where she met up her sister, Caroline, who travelled to Scotland with her. Her husband, Robert upon her return wrote the following poem:
Bonnie Nellie's coming back
She'll soon by on the joyful track
Bound for Australia's sunny strands
To 19 Lamb Crescent, Merrylands
She'll sail across to old Biscay Bay
And down the Med to Napoli
Back to Egypt's mystic shore
Where Nellie's walked the streets before
She'll see the rocks of Aden Grey
And then Colombo across the bay
But the fondest sight that Nell will see
Will be Old Rab at Circular Quay.
In the early 1970's Helen and Bob again visited Scotland and the US after her sister Caroline and her husband had retired to Florida.
Several months after her husband's death in 1977, Helen's Aunt Liz also passed away. As she and Helen's mother had lived together for many years, Helen went to Scotland and brought her mother back to live in Australia with her. Her sister, Caroline also settled in Australia and lived with Helen following the death of her husband in 1981, but returned to the United States each winter.
