Phibbs Family of Staffordshire, England

The Phibbs family has been traced back to the villages of Brierley Hill and Kinver in Staffordshire, England. Descendants of this family moved to Birmingham in the mid 1800's and then migrated to Australia in the 20th century.
My direct line of descent is shown in bold typeface.

Kinver, Staffordshire, England.
"Brierley Hill, one and a half miles N of Stourbridge, and two miles SSE of Kingswinford, is a populous village, containing several streets, many good shops, and extensive coal, iron, and glass works. By an old deed, it appears that coal and ironstone were got here as early as 46th of Edward III. Brierley Hill was a chapelry in Kingswinford parish until 1848 when it was made a separate ecclesiastical parish."

Paul's great-grandson, Albert Harold Phibbs believed that Paul was a convict and that he was transported to Australia. In the early 1920's he had some research undertaken, however this was not proven.Further preliminary research by the auther would confirm that Paul was never a convict. There is evidence to suggest he died in the UK however this has not yet been substantiated either.

8. Henry PHIBBS
. Son of Paul PHIBBS & Hannah HAYWOOD. Christen 30 Nov 1823 in Kinver, Staffordshire, ENGLAND 7.According to papers in the possession of Albert Phibbs, Paul and Hannah were residing at Wordsley at the time of Henry's baptism in 1823. Paul at this time was described as a Nailor.
Henry married Sarah SOLLEY daughter of George SOLLEY 3 Aug 1846 in Netherton, Staffordshire, ENGLAND 5.
Henry and Sarah were married in the District Chapel of Netherton in the presence of Louisa Cartwright and James Mackay. Both signed with their marks. At the time of their marriage, Henry was described as being of full age, whilst Sarah was a minor. He was a Puddler, and both were living in Netherton. Henry's father was given as Paul Phibbs, a Nail Maker, and Sarah's father, George Solley, a labourer.
9. Paul PHIBBS. Son of Paul PHIBBS & Hannah HAYWOOD. Born Circa 1825 in Kinver, Staffordshire, ENGLAND
18. Died 26 Nov 1861 in Birmingham, Warwickshire, ENGLAND 2. Occupation Forgeman 3, Iron Tube Maker 13.An unmarried Paul PHIBBS, aged 24 yrs, Carman, born Birmingham, Warwickshire was residing in the home of Richard HAYWOOD at 62 Wharf St, Birmingham as a lodger at the time of the 1851 Census.
He married
Louisa STONE, daughter of John STONE/PARKES, 9 Aug 1852 in St. Phillips, Birmingham, Warwickshire, ENGLAND 5. Born Circa 1830 in Wolverhampton, Staffordshire, ENGLAND 18.At the time of their marriage at St. Phillips Church, Birmingham, in 1852, both Paul and Louisa were residing at Little Charles St, Birmingham. He was described as a bachelor and she a spinster. Both Paul and Louisa signed with their marks. The witnesses to their marriage were Mary and Charles MILLER. 3
At the time of the 1861 Census Paul and his family were residing at the Back of 158 Ledsam St, Birmingham, their details are as follows:
Paul PHIBBS, Head, 36 yrs, Tube Maker, born Kinver, Staffordshire.
Louisa PHIBBS, wife, 31 yrs, born Wolverhampton, Staffordshire.
Mary A PHIBBS, dau 11 yrs, born Wolverhampton, Staffordshire.
William PHIBBS, son, 2 yrs, born Birmingham, Warwickshire.
Ann PHIBBS, dau, 5 yrs, born Birmingham, Warwickshire.
Edward PHIBBS, son, 5 wks, born Birmingham, Warwickshire.
Paul died in 1861 when he was just 37 years old of "morbis cordis" which translated means a "diseased heart". His wife, Louisa, was the informant and she was also present at his death. She signed with her mark.
2After Paul's death, Louisa married Thomas MARTIN at St. Georges Church, Birmingham in 1862, she was described as a widow and Thomas a widower. The witnesses to their marriage were Joseph and Jane CLAYTON.
Although her father's name is given as John STONE at her marriage to Paul PHIBBS in 1852, her father's name is given as John PARKES at her marriage to Thomas MARTIN in 1862. This raises the question, did her father die and her mother re-marry ? Why are there two different surnames given for her father ?
It is not known what happened to Louisa and Paul's children:
Mary A born c. 1850 in Wolverhamton.
Ann born c. 1856 in Birmingham.
Edward born c.1861 in Birmingham.
Mary A's age on the census that she was infact born 2 years prior to their marriage.
Is it possible that Ann born in 1856 is the same Anne who was baptised as the child of Thomas and Anne MARTIN in 1867 ? Or did they both have daughters named Ann and Louisa and Paul's daughter died ? There is an entry on the St. Catherine's House Indexes for an Ann PHIBBS born Birmingham 1856 1st Q. 6d.27. Hopefully further searches of the St. Catherine's House indexes will clarify this.
Louisa has been identified on the 1861 Census with Paul and four children, Mary A., William, Ann and Edward.
The 1871 Census has not been consulted as yet.
Several Louisa MARTIN's have been located on the 1881 Census Index for Warwickshire, however the only one with an age likely to match is one aged 56 years who was residing at 2 Back of 237 King Edward St, Birmingham as housekeeper to William Dawson. This Louisa was however unmarried and born in Birmingham, whereas earlier Census (1861) indicated Louisa was born in Wolverhampton.
There is an illegible MARTIN entry listing a Mrs. Martin, aged 50 with three children: Edwin, aged 20 a bedstead maker; Phoebe aged 17 a Jewellers Pol...; and Jane aged 14 a Press Worker. Louisa's son Edward Phibbs would have been 20 years of age and her daughter, Jane Martin about 14 years of age at this time however no record of a Phoebe previously existed. Further there is a James Martin aged 18 an inmate of Aston Reformatory School, however Louisa's son, James would have only been aged 16 years at this time.
38They had the following children:
10 i. Ann PHIBBS
11 ii. William Charles PHIBBS
12 iii. Edward PHIBBS

10. Ann PHIBBS
. Daughter of Paul PHIBBS & Louisa STONE. Born 26 Jan 1856 in Birmingham, Warwickshire, ENGLAND 1.A birth entry on the St. Catherine's House Indexes has been found: 1856 - 1st Quarter Birmingham 6d 27 however Ann has not been identified on later records. This certificate has since been provided by a relative and confirms that Ann is the daughther of Paul and Louisa. At the time, Louisa was the informant and gave her maiden surname as Parkes. The family were living at 51 Icknield Square, Birmingham.
11. William Charles PHIBBS. Son of Paul PHIBBS & Louisa STONE. Born 13 May 1858 in Ladywood, Birmingham, Warwickshire, ENGLAND
1. Christen 30 May 1858 in St. Marks, Birmingham, Warwickshire, ENGLAND 6. Died 1894 in Aston, Birmingham, Warwickshire, ENGLAND 22. Occupation Tortoise Shell Worker 3, Pearl Worker 12, Slate Worker 1. Religion Church Of England.William was born at the back of 127 Nelson St West, Birmingham. 1 He was baptised twice, firstly on 30 May 1858 at St. Mark, Birmingham and the second time on 19 May 1867 again at St. Mark, Birmingham.
6The second baptism took place on the same day as that of his half brother, James and half sisters, Anne and Jane. It is believed this took place following the death of his step-father, Thomas Martin who died in 1867 - although his death certificate has not been purchased as yet, so the exact date is not yet known.
5William appeared on the 1861 Census at No 6 Back of 158 Ledsam St, Birmingham with his parents, aged 2 years.
He married
Clara WILLIAMS, daughter of Henry WILLIAMS & Mary PLIMMER, 20 Jul 1879 in St. John, Ladywood, Birmingham, Warwickshire, ENGLAND 3. Born Before 1858 3. Died After 1915 13.Clara and William were married in the Parish Church of St. John, Ladywood in 1879. Both were over 21 years of age. At the time, William's father, Paul was described as a Tube Maker, and Clara's father, Henry, as Shoemaker. The witnesses to their marriage were John Gilbert and Mary Sharratt. Both William and John signed the register whilst Clara and Mary both signed with their marks. 3
William, his wife, Clara and their daughter, Florence Louisa have been identified on the 1881 Census Index residing at 9 Ct 5 House New Summer St, Birmingham. William was aged 22 years, his occupation listed as Pearl Ivory and Tortoise Shell Turner. He and all his family were born in Birmingham. At the time of the census, Clara was aged 25 years and their daughter Florence aged 1 year.
Also listed at the same address, as a lodger, was Ann Williams an unmarried 28 year old Jewellers Polisher and her 3 children, Harry aged 12, Rose aged 9 and Gertrude aged 3. It is possible that Ann is a sister or sister-in-law of Clara's.
Pictured: It is believed this picture is of Clara and her daughter, Florence.
At the time of his youngest son's birth, in 1892, William was described as a Pearl Worker (Journeyman). The family were living at 14 Court 2, New Summer St, in the sub-district of St. George.
12Family believed that William died when Clara was about 2 yrs of age. His death has since been found on the St. Catherine's House Indexes in 2nd Qtr of 1894, in the district of Aston, Vol. 6d, page 184. Clara would have been 5 years old at this time.
His death certificate has not yet been purchased.
To date Clara's birth has not been positively identified. There are 6 entries on the St. Catherine's House Index to Births for Clara's born between 1852-1857:

A letter to the Register Office, Birmingham in 1990 indicated that they were unable to trace a birth certificate in respect of Clara WILLIAMS between 1855-1860. A request for the two 1856 entries, resulted in neither having a father named, Henry. The 1854 entry is the daughter of James.
The only Clara baptism found on the IGI with a father named Henry is Clara Ann daughter of Henry and Frances christened 9 Mar 1856, St. George, Birmingham. This entry fits with the birth in 1st Q. 1856 above.
A Henry WILLIAMS married a Frances PARKINS on 20 Oct 1841 at Aston Juxta, Birmingham.
Also of interest is the baptism of an Isabella WILLIAMS d/o Henry and Mary on 15 Aug 1836 at St. Martin, Birmingham. A Henry WILLIAMS married Mary PLIMMER on 4 Apr 1836 at St. Martin, Birmingham.
An Isabella WILLIAMS married a John SPENCER on 24 Jun 1867 at Bishops Ryder, WARWICKSHIRE.
Whether any of this is relevant is not known, however Clara's name on her daughter's marriage certificate was given as Clara SPENCER, not WILLIAMS. June Anderson (great aunt of Vicki Hails and grand-daughter of Clara WILLIAMS) has in her possession a funeral card for Isabella Spencer who died 21 Nov 1909 aged 73 yrs and buried at Witton Cemetery. This fits with the above baptism. It is believed that Clara and Isabella were sisters.
Is it possible that Isabella is a sister of Clara and that their father Henry was married to Mary then Frances ?
Research undertaken by Joan Edge of Castle Bromwich, Birmingham revealed that the Henry WILLIAMS married to Frances was a jeweller and that the Henry WILLIAMS married to Mary was a cordwainer. Joan's research also revealed the baptism of an illegitimate child Florence Mary born to Isabella in 1865.
Positive identification on either the 1861 or 1871 Census records may clarify this further.
Clara was the informant at the registration of her daughter Clara's birth in 1889 and her son, Stephen's in 1892. On both occasions she signed only with her mark.
Although not noted as deceased at the time of her daughter's marriage, it would seem likely that she is the one noted on the St. Catherine's House Death Indexes for a Clara PHIBBS aged 55 yrs at Aston in 1912 3rd Q. 6d.221.
William and Clara had the following children:
13 i. Florence Louisa PHIBBS
14 ii. William Charles PHIBBS
15 iii. Alice Maud PHIBBS
16 iv. Albert Harold PHIBBS
17 v. May PHIBBS
18 vi. Clara Lillian PHIBBS
19 vii. Stephen Paul PHIBBS
12. Edward PHIBBS. Son of Paul PHIBBS & Louisa STONE. Born 1861 in Birmingham, Warwickshire, ENGLAND
18.Edward appeared on the 1861 Census with his parents, however he was not baptised in 1867 along with other children of Louisa and both her husbands, so it was initially believed to have been deceased at that time. It has since been determined that he did survive to adulthood and marry.
Edward married Eliza GROVES daughter of Thomas GROVES 24 May 1884 St. Stephens, Birmingham, Warwickshire, ENGLAND. Born c1862. 3

Clara arrived in Australia on 7 February, 1915 on the "Ballarat" where she met her future husband, Arthur, who was known as "Sam" a fellow passenger. Although her daughters believed she travelled to Australia on her own, the shipping records indicate that an M. Phibbs was also on board. This is most likely her sister, May, who was also a witness at her marriage.

Arthur was born at 4 Mill Stream Rd, Bermondsey. He is the youngest of Richard and Sarah's 8 known children. His mother was the informant of his birth. 1
As mentioned above, Sam also arrived in Australia on 7 February 1915 on the "Ballarat". It is understood that prior to coming to Australia, Sam also spent some time in Canada.
After his arrival in Australia Sam and Clara resided at the following locations:
They had the following children:
26 i. Esther Rose Lillian RAKE
27 ii. Florence Sarah May RAKE
28 iii. George William RAKE
29 iv. June RAKE
During the depression, Samuel travelled north to Queensland in search of work. He drowned in the Brisbane River and his body was found at Toowong. The following appeared in the 'Brisbane Courier' of Tuesday, 28 March, 1933:
"BODY RECOVERED FROM RIVER
At about 10.30am yesterday the body of a man, who was later identified as Arthur Samuel Rake, was found floating in the Toowong Reach of the Brisbane River, near the Regatta Hotel. The post-mortem examination revealed that death was due to asphyxia by drowning. Rake, who came to Brisbane from Sydney, where his wife and daughter reside, was staying at a boarding house in Gloucester Street, Spring Hill, and was last seen alive on Friday afternoon."
Although the above article refers to "his wife and daughter", Arthur had three daughters and one son living at the time of his death.
He is buried at Toowong Cemetery in Brisbane, and his brother William had a tombstone erected which reads:
