Rake Family of Somerset, England

Rake is
my paternal grandmother's maiden surname. To date I have traced my Rake
ancestors back to Yeovil in Somerset. Although they moved to London in the mid
1800's, they did not migrate to Australia until 1915. There are no male Rake
descendants living in Australia. My direct line is shown through those in bold
typeface.

1. Thomas RAKE. Born Circa 1791 in
Mudford, Somerset, ENGLAND 17. Died 1866 in Yeovil, Somerset, ENGLAND92.
Occupation Leather Dresser 13.
Thomas married Hester, although to date, a marriage for this
couple has not been found. She was born circa 1792 in Closworth, Somerset,
ENGLAND 17. Buried 6 Apr 1854 in Yeovil, Somerset, ENGLAND 5.
They had the following children:
2 i. George
RAKE
3 ii. Mary
Ann RAKE
4 iii. Melina
RAKE
On 12 June, 1841 Thomas Rake, his wife Hester and likely children,
George, 25, Mary Ann, 10 and Melina, 8 were residing at Park St. Thomas and his
son, George were both described as Leather Dressers and daughter, Mary Ann a
glover. 16
A Harriet Rake, aged 20 and Sarah Rake, aged 14, were residing in
Mudford Rd with an Eliza Hayes (?) and her son, Alfred. It is possible that
this is also the family of Thomas and Hester, as a Harriet Rake witnessed the
marriage of Thomas' son, George to Esther Shearstone later that year.16
It is most likely that Thomas Rake is the one residing at Park St,
Yeovil at the time of the 1851 Census. He was a Glover, aged 50, 56 or 58 and
was born in Mudford. Also living with Thomas were his wife, Esther (Hester),
aged 60 who was born in Clasworth (?), Dorset and their children Mary Ann, aged
20, a glover, and Helena (Melina), aged 18, a dressmaker. Eliza Hayes, a 12
year old Glover, was also visiting the home that evening. 17
Thomas Rake aged 67, described as a widow was lodging at 51 Park
St, Hendford in the home of William Brown at the time of the 1861 Census. Also
residing with Thomas at this time, was his daughter, Mary Ann, now 29 years
old. Thomas' birthplace was again given as Mudford. 18
There is also a William and Elizabeth Rake in Yeovil at the same
time. William died in 1860 aged 77 (ie. born c1783). His wife, Elizabeth died
shortly after the birth of their youngest child, Emily in 1839 at the age of
38. This William may have married again - or had a son, William who was married
to Fanny or Frances.
A death has since been noted for Thomas
Rake aged 76 in 1866 at Yeovil, Ref. 5c 314. This age and the location fits
with Thomas' and that Thomas was not identified on the 1871 census.

2. George RAKE. Son of Thomas RAKE
& Hester. Born Circa 1819 in Yeovil, Somerset, ENGLAND 38. Died 1882
in London, ENGLAND 22. Occupation Yardsman 5 / Leather Dresser 13.
George was still residing with his parents, Thomas and Hester
(Esther) at the time of the 1841 Census, which was taken on 12 June. The family
was at Park St, in the township of Yeovil. Also residing at this address were
likely sisters, Mary Ann and Melina. 16
He married Esther SHEARSTONE,
daughter of Richard SHEARSTONE, 21 Nov 1841 in Yeovil, Somerset, ENGLAND 3. Born Circa
1820 in Ashington, Somerset, ENGLAND 17. Died 1881 in London, ENGLAND 22. Occupation
Glove Sewer 3 /Laundress 17.
Unfortunately, Esther has not yet been identified on the 1841
Census in Yeovil. It is possible she was still residing at Ashington at this
time 16. Several baptism/burial entries for possible nephews and nieces of
Esther's have been identified in the Bishops Transcripts for Yeovil during the
years 1838-1861. Is the Tabitha Baker who was residing with George and Esther
in 1851 a possible wife of Robert Shearstone and is he possibly a brother of
Esther? A Robert and Tabitha Shearstone had a daughter, Louisa who was
privately baptised on 11 Dec, 1854 - this child was buried on 22 May, 1855.
At the time of their marriage in 1841, both George and Esther were
residing at Kingston. George was described as a Leather Dresser and signed the
register, whilst Esther, who was a Glove Sewer, signed with her mark. The
witnesses to their marriage were Richard Shearstone (likely Esther's father, or
possibly a brother) and Harriet Rake, most likely a sister to George and
possibly a friend of Esther's. 3
They had the following children:
5 i. Caroline
RAKE
6 ii. Harriett

7 iii. Sarah

RAKE
At the time of the 1851 Census, which was taken on 31 March, George
and his wife, Esther were living at Back, Kingston, Yeovil. George was aged 34
and described as a Leather Dresser. His wife, Esther was 33 and described as a
laundress. Their children included Harriet, aged 9, Sarah aged 5, Caroline aged
3 and Thomas aged 6 months. All in the family were born at Yeovil, with the
exception of Esther, who was born at Ashington. Also in the home that evening
was Tabitha Baker a servant and visitors, Joseph Cole, a 46-year-old painter
and his son, William aged 19. 17
It is not known exactly when the family left Somerset and settled
in London, but would appear to be between 1851 and 1860.
The 1861 census reveals George and Esther (recorded as Eliza) as
living at 10 Victoria Place, Rotherhithe. George was aged 51, Esther 43. Also
living with them, were their children, Thomas aged 10, Elizabeth aged 5, George
aged 3 and Mary Ann aged 1. 210
Their daughters, Sarah aged 15 and Caroline aged 13, may be the
ones noted at 37 Tooley St, St. Olave, Southwark. 210
George and Esther appear on the 1871 census at 6 Alexander St in
Bermondsey with their children, Elizabeth, George, Mary A and Alice. George was aged 54 and his wife 52, and
George described as a Leather
Dresser. Their two elder children,
Elizabeth aged 17 and George aged 14 were both born in Yeovil Somerset.
Elizabeth was a machinist and George possibily a stoker. Mary A aged 11 and
Alice aged 7 were both born in Bermondsey and were both scholars.
George, his wife, Esther and their two daughters have been
identified on the 1881 Census Index.
They were residing at 12 Alexis St, Bermondsey. George was aged 62 and described as a
Leather Dresser. This occupation was
previously noted on his son's marriage certificate, however the word 'dresser'
was illegible. The census confirms that both George and his wife were born in Yeovil,
Somerset. Also living with the family
were two lodgers, George Wood and James Cook. The latter marrying Mary Ann
later that year. 38
It is possible that a William RAKE who was lodging in Bermondsey is
also related; as his birthplace was also given as Yeovil, Somerset. ®38
Esther was 63 years old when she died on 30 April 1881 at her home
at 12 Alexis St, Bermondsey of cerebral disease. The informant was her
daughter, Harriet Poore, who was also present at her death. 2
George was 65 years old when he died on 25 March 1882 at his home
at 12 Alexis St, Bermondsey of chronic bronchitis. The informant was his daughter, Harriet Poore, who was also
present at his death. 2

Hester, at Park St, aged 10 yrs. 16
At the time of the 1851 Census, Mary Ann was still living with her
parents, and was aged 20 years and described as a Glover. 17
Mary Ann was still living with her father at the time of the 1861
Census, when they were lodging with William Brown and his four children at 51
Park St, Hendford. She was aged 29 born in Yeovil, and described as a Glove
Sewer. 18

ENGLAND 5.
Melina was noted on the 1841 Census with her parents, Thomas and
Hester, at Park St, aged 8 yrs. 16
At the time of the 1851 Census, Melina was still living with her
parents, however was recorded at Helena, she was aged 18 years and described as
a Dressmaker. 17
Melina was 22 years old when she died in 1855. 5

Reference to the St. Catherine's House Indexes revealed a birth
entry for a Richard Thomas RAKE in the 4th Quarter of 1850 at Yeovil. This
certificate confirms that Thomas was born on 9 October at Kingston in Yeovil
and that his parents were George Rake and Esther Shearstone. 1
Thomas was baptised at Yeovil on 1 November by the name of Thomas
Richard Rake. Although the Parish Registers were examined until 1861, he is the
last of George and Esther's children to be baptised at Yeovil. At the time his
family were living at Kingston, and his father was described as a Leather
Dresser. 5
Thomas is listed on the 1851 Census with his parents and sisters in

George was a Leather Dresser, and Sarah's father, Anthony a Gentlemen's
Coachman. Both gave their residence as 10 Slippers Place, Rotherhithe. Both
Thomas and Sarah signed the register. There were three witnesses to their
marriage, including Sarah's father, Anthony, who signed with his mark. The
other witnesses were William Dogget and Catherine Clement. It is possible that
Catherine is Sarah's married sister. Whilst she was baptised Elizabeth
Catherine, it is noted that she was recorded on the 1851 Census as Catherine. 3
Sarah was born at 84 Paradise St, Rotherhithe. She is the third of
four known children to Anthony and Fanny.
Her father’s occupation at the time was noted as Cab Proprietor. Her
mother, Fanny, was the informant and signed with her mark. 1
As the Census of 1851 was taken on 31 March, just three weeks prior
to Sarah's birth, obviously she will not be recorded, however her mother,
Fanny, her sister, Catherine and
brother, James were noted. 17
They had the following children:

death of a Rose Flanders in the 2nd Quarter of 1901 and also the births and
subsequent deaths of Alfred and George Flanders also in early 1901. Both entries have the same registration
numbers so would appear to support the information provided by descendant Mary
Kimber above. Unfortunately, the
FreeBDM site did not reveal a likely marriage for a Rose Rake during this
period. There is however a marriage for
a Charles Thomas Flanders in June quarter 1897 at St. Giles, 1b 1137, however

1933 in Toowong, Brisbane, QLD, AUSTRALIA 2. Buried 28 Mar 1933 in Toowong Cemetery, Brisbane, QLD, AUSTRALIA 2. Occupation Steelworker 3 2. Known As Sam. Religion Church of England.
Arthur Samuel was born at 4 Mill Stream Rd, Bermondsey. He is the
youngest of Richard and Sarah's 8 known children. His mother was the informant
of his birth. 1
Sam arrived in Australia on 7 February 1915 on the "Ballarat".
His future wife, Clara, was also a passenger on this ship. It is understood
that prior to coming to Australia, Sam also spent some time in Canada.
He married Clara Lillian PHIBBS, daughter of William Charles PHIBBS & Clara WILLIAMS, 24 Dec
1915 in St. Paul's, Sydney, NSW, AUSTRALIA 3. Born 8 Aug 1889 in Aston, Birmingham, Warwickshire, ENGLAND 1. Died 22 Sep 1966 in Merrylands, NSW,
AUSTRALIA. Buried in Rookwood Cemetery, NSW, AUSTRALIA. Religion Church of
England.
Clara is the sixth child of William Phibbs and Clara Williams and
was born in Bradford St, Aston, her mother was the informant. 1
Clara arrived in Australia on 7 February, 1915 on the "Ballarat"
where she met her future husband, Sam a fellow passenger. Although her
daughters believed she travelled to Australia on her own, the shipping records
indicate that a M. Phibbs was also on board. This is most likely her sister,
May, who was also a witness at her marriage.
It is understood that Clara went into service on her arrival in
Sydney, but that she kept in contact with Arthur as they married at St. Paul's
church, later that year on Christmas Eve. At the time, both gave their
residence as Redfern. Arthur was described as a steelworker, while Clara did
not have an occupation listed. Both their fathers' were reputedly deceased at
the time. Witnesses to their marriage were J. Dalley and M. Phibbs, who is
believed to be Clara's sister, May. 3
Clara and Arthur Samuel had the following children:
25 i. Esther
Rose Lillian RAKE
26 ii. Florence
Sarah May RAKE

William RAKE

Pictured: Arthur Samuel Rake (centre) with two of his brothers.
During the depression, Samuel travelled north to Queensland in
search of work. He drowned in the Brisbane River and his body was found at Toowong.
The following appeared in the 'Brisbane Courier' of Tuesday, 28
March, 1933:
|
BODY
RECOVERED FROM RIVER At about 10.30am yesterday the body of a man, who was later
identified as Arthur Samuel Rake, was found floating in the Toowong Reach of the
Brisbane River, near the Regatta Hotel. The post-mortem examination revealed
that death was due to asphyxia by drowning. Rake, who came to Brisbane from
Sydney, where his wife and daughter reside, was staying at a boarding house
in Gloucester Street, Spring Hill, and was last seen alive on Friday
afternoon. |
Although the above article refers to "his wife and
daughter", Arthur had three daughters and one son living at the time of
his death. His brother William had a tombstone erected which reads:
|
In Memory of ARTHUR SAMUEL RAKE. Died 24th March 1933. Aged 45 years. Erected by his brother Will. |
Clara married her second husband, William Jones at the District
Registrars Office in Petersham. He gave his usual residence as the Military
Camp in Bathurst and described himself as a widower. Clara who was a widow,
gave her residence as 74 White St, Leichhardt. Witnesses to their marriage were
C. W. Monhouse and Frank O'Reilly, Clara's son-in-law. 3
The following notation is recorded on their marriage certificate:
On the 12 August, 1942, William Jones was convicted on an
indictment for bigamy at the Sydney Quarter Session he having on the 20 January
1942 married Clara Lillian Rake at Petersham NSW whilst Ellen McDonald whom he married
on the 10 August 1912 at Waterloo NSW was alive. Certified by W. C. Lacey,
Clerk of the Peace, Sydney. 3
Clara's grandson, Colin Hails, recalls Bill Jones and remembers
referring to him as "Uncle Bill". Despite the annulment of their
marriage, William and Clara did however, continue to reside together until his
death. 25
In her later life, Clara's youngest daughter, June resided with
her.
Clara died at Lockwood St, Merrylands of a heart attack and is
buried at Rookwood Cemetery by her legal name of Clara RAKE.
30. Elizabeth RAKE. Daughter of
Richard Thomas RAKE & Sarah Ann COOPER.
It is believed that a daughter Elizabeth was born and may have died
as a toddler. While there are two
possible births on the St. Catherine’s birth indexes, namely Elizabeth Sarah in
1884, and Elizabeth Esther in 1888, there are no likely deaths to suit on the
FreeBDM to support this information at this time.
There is a marriage for an Elizabeth Esther Rake on FreeBDM in Jun
Qtr 1910 at St. Olave ref. 1d 331. Possible spouse is John Alfred Hines, but
only one groom is listed on the index, so is not complete.
