Salisbury family of Bedfordshire, England

The family of Jeremiah Salisbury has been traced to the English village of Eversholt in Bedfordshire. Although it appears that Jeremiah's father was from nearby Aspley Guise, his mother's family were natives of Eversholt.

St. John the Baptist, Eversholt, Bedfordshire, England

Unfortunately, although we have found Jeremiah's baptism in nearby Wavendon in Buckinghamshire, to date, we have been unable to find out what happened to his parents. Jeremiah met his wife, Sarah and they were married in Cambridgeshire. They left England in 1849 and settled in Australia. These pages relate to known descendants of this couple.

My direct line of descent through this family is noted in bold typeface.

First Generation

1. Thomas SALISBURY. Born in Aspley Guise, Bedfordshire, ENGLAND3. Died Before 1849. Occupation Blacksmith13.

Thomas married Ann VALENTINE, daughter of James VALENTINE & Mary CLARKE, 6 Nov 1818 in Eversholt, Bedfordshire, ENGLAND5. Christen 30 Oct 1796 in Eversholt, Bedfordshire, ENGLAND5. Died Before 1849.

At his marriage to Ann, Thomas was described as being of Aspley Guise and his name was spelt SALESBURY, however, no record of a baptism for Thomas has been located to date.

What happened to Thomas and Ann is not known. The baptism of their son at Wavendon in Buckinghamshire is the last known recording of either. Searches of the indexes to the 1841 Census for Bedfordshire, Huntingdonshire and Cambridgeshire have failed to positively locate either.

They had the following children:

          2        i.        Mary Ann SALISBURY

          3        ii.       Jeremiah SALISBURY

Second Generation

2. Mary Ann SALISBURY. Daughter of Thomas SALISBURY & Ann VALENTINE. Christen 2 May 1819 in Eversholt, Bedfordshire, ENGLAND7.

Mary Ann married John SMITH, son of John SMITH, 24 Dec 1857 in Eversholt, Bedfordshire, ENGLAND7. Occupation Labourer5.

Despite her baptism occurring in Eversholt, no further record of Mary Ann in Eversholt, can be found until her marriage to John Smith in 1857. At the time of their marriage, John is described as a widower whilst Mary Ann was a spinster. The witnesses to their marriage were John Crowley and Sarah White. 5

3. Jeremiah SALISBURY. Son of Thomas SALISBURY & Ann VALENTINE. Born 8 Feb 1822 in Wavendon, Buckinghamshire, ENGLAND188. Christen 7 Apr 1822 in Wavendon, Buckinghamshire, ENGLAND6. Died 27 Sep 1905 in Woonona, NSW, AUSTRALIA 2. Buried 29 Sep 1905 in Presbyterian Cemetery, Woonona, NSW, AUSTRALIA 2. Occupation Labourer 3, Farmer 12. Religion Church of England then Presbyterian.

He married Sarah POPE, daughter of John POPE & Sarah POULTER, 25 Dec 1843 in Ramsey, Huntingdonshire, ENGLAND 3. Born 29 Jul 1821 in Wimblington, Cambridgeshire, ENGLAND 25. Christen in Doddington, Cambridgeshire, ENGLAND. Died 19 Apr 1914 in Woonona, NSW, AUSTRALIA 2. Buried 21 Apr 1914 in Presbyterian Cemetery, Woonona, NSW, AUSTRALIA 2. Occupation House Servant 9. Religion Church of England then Presbyterian.

There are three baptisms recorded at Doddington for Sarah Pope, daughter of John and Sarah, one dated the 19 Aug 1821, the other two on the 10 Mar 1822. The CRO indicated that the second baptism might in fact relate to the earlier private baptism, and be her receiving into the church.

Sarah and Jeremiah were married in the Established Church in Ramsey, Huntingdon on Christmas Day in 1843. Jeremiah was described as a labourer. His father, Thomas a blacksmith, and Sarah's father, John also a labourer. Neither were able to sign their names, so signed the register with their mark. The witnesses to their marriage were John Allen and Ann Phillips. Their relationship to the couple is unknown, however Sarah did have an older sister named Ann who may have been married. 3

Jeremiah and Sarah migrated to Australia on the Midlothian, which arrived in Sydney on 8 Apr 1849 having departed from London on 17 December, 1848.

The Sydney Morning Herald of 9 April reported:

The Midlothian has on board 203 immigrants. She has been placed in quarantine for 2 or 3 days, in order that the bedding, clothes, and etc of the immigrants may be thoroughly aired and cleansed before any communication is allowed with the ship: 9 deaths, and 32 cases in all of measles, having occurred during the voyage.

Shipping Indents described Jeremiah as 27 yrs, labourer, born Bedfordshire. His parents, Thomas and Anne were both dead. He was Church of England, could read and write and had no relations in the colony. Sarah was 27 yrs of age, a house servant born at Wimblington, Cambridgeshire. Her parents, John and Sarah Pope were both deceased. She was Church of England and could read.

Jeremiah and Sarah had the following children:

          4        i.        George SALISBURY

          5        ii.       Thomas SALISBURY

          6        iii.       Mary Ann SALISBURY

          7        iv.      James Herbert SALISBURY

          8        v.       John SALISBURY

          9        vi.      George SALISBURY

          10      vii.      Elizabeth SALISBURY (Twin)

          11      viii.     Sarah SALISBURY (Twin)

          12      ix.       Maria SALISBURY

          13      x.       Alfred SALISBURY

Oral history indicates that Sarah lost a child to 'milk' fever on the voyage to Australia, however, there is no record of any children in the Shipping indents. What happened to Jeremiah and Sarah two children born in England, George and Thomas is not known at this time.

Jeremiah was granted 38˝ acres of Crown Land, Portion 78 in the parish of Ulladulla in the county of St. Vincent near Ulladulla on 22 Mar 1858.

On 21 Aug 1860 he purchased a further seven ˝ acre parcels of land in the township of Milton, namely Lots 4, 5, 7 and 29 of Section A and Lots 13, 17 and 19 of Section B. 26

It would appear the original purchase was used as collateral for the purchases at Milton, however both were apparently lost, as he could not repay his mortgage to Richard Waring.

In July 1861 Jeremiah was declared bankrupt, his debts totalled nearly 230 pounds although he held assets totalling 173 pounds. The land at Ulladulla was valued at 50 pounds and the total of the land at Milton 38 pounds. Jeremiah also had 4 horses, 22 cows and heifers, 12 pigs and household furniture, 6 working bullocks and a dray valued at 40 pounds. The wearing apparel of himself, his wife and children was valued at 5 pounds.

Despite the land purchases, no record can be found of Jeremiah living at or near Ulladulla. The family resided at Stoney Creek near Jamberoo on property owned by Dr. Menzies until about 1864 when they moved to Bulli. The family later moved to Woonona.

The Kiama and District Historical Society have advised that Stoney Creek was the name given in early times to the locality about half way between Albion Park and Jamberoo. It was not far from the area of Curramore and although there was a school there from 1863 to 1872 there was never a village as such.

Jeremiah was 83 years old when he died in 1905 of senile decay.

Sarah and Jeremiah were married for 61 years when Jeremiah died in 1905. Sarah lived to the age of 92 years, the cause of death being senile decay.

The following articles appeared in the Illawarra Mercury:

Friday, 24 April, 1914

MOTHERS DAY - A Mothers Day will be observed at the Woonona Presbyterian Church on Sunday, and services will be held at 11am. In the evening a memorial service will be held for the late Mrs Salisbury.

Third Generation

4. George SALISBURY. Son of Jeremiah SALISBURY & Sarah POPE. Born 17 May 1845. Christen 24 Sep 1848 in Ramsey, Huntingdonshire, ENGLAND5. Died Before 1849 in ENGLAND.

5. Thomas SALISBURY. Son of Jeremiah SALISBURY & Sarah POPE. Born 11 Nov 1847. Christen 24 Sep 1848 in Ramsey, Huntingdonshire, ENGLAND5. Died Before 1849 in ENGLAND.

It appears that Thomas and his brother, George may have died prior to their parents migration to Australia in 1848, however, there is no record of a burial in Ramsey, Huntingdonshire where his parents were married nor has a death record on the St. Catherine's House Indexes been identified.

Neither George nor Thomas arrived in Australia with their parents. The shipping indents relate to those who arrived in the colony, neither child is listed. Generally any deaths occurring at sea are recorded, and there is nothing to indicate that either child were actually ever on board. Although family 'legend' does indicate that Sarah lost a child on the voyage, it is possible that she may have been pregnant and gave birth on the voyage, however, this would normally be recorded in the shipping indents.

It was thought possible that the children may have been left in England with relatives, however as another child named George was born in 1857 this would seem unlikely.

6. Mary Ann SALISBURY. Daughter of Jeremiah SALISBURY & Sarah POPE. Born 5 Mar 1851 in Minnamurra, Jamberoo, NSW, AUSTRALIA 5. Christen 20 Apr 1851 in Jamberoo, NSW, AUSTRALIA 5. Died 13 Jun 1888 in Glebe, NSW, AUSTRALIA 2. Buried 15 Jun 1888 in Woonona Presbyterian Cemetery, NSW, AUSTRALIA 2. Occupation Dressmaker. Known As Annie. Religion Church of England then Presbyterian.

Mary Anne or Annie as she was known, was the first of Jeremiah and Sarah's children to be born in Australian.

She married Gustavus Wilhelm Henri VOLLBRECHT, son of Johann Christian Hermann VOLLBRECHT & Dorothee Christianne A. A. FLEGEL, 10 May 1870 in Sydney, NSW, AUSTRALIA 3. Born Circa 1842 in Hanover, GERMANY 2/98. Died 26 Oct 1899 in Lidcombe, NSW, AUSTRALIA 2/98. Buried 27 Oct 1899 in Rookwood, NSW, AUSTRALIA 2/98. Occupation Pastry Cook (1876) Baker (1899) Inspector of Bores 98. Religion Church of England 2/98.

Annie married Gustavus at the age of 19. Her occupation at this time was given as Dressmaker and she was living at 26 Hunter St. Gustavus was residing at Petersham. The witnesses to the marriage were Ellen Logan and Carl Ogaard. 3

They had the following children:

14      i.        Adolph Henry Gustavus VOLLBRECHT

Annie and her husband lived in Melbourne for a time, and their only child, Adolph was born there in 1876.

Annie died in 1888 at Campbell St, Glebe of measles and pneumonia. The informant was John Watkins, believed to be a neighbour. 2

Annie is buried at Woonona Presbyterian Cemetery and her headstone reads "Beloved wife of Gustav Vollbrecht who died at Glebe."

It is understood that Annie's son, Adolph, who was 11 years old at the time of his mother's death was raised by his grandparents, Jeremiah and Sarah.

According to Gustavus' death certificate, he migrated to Australia about 1869. He died of cancer of the bladder and is buried at Rookwood Cemetery.2

Prior to his death, Gustavus was an inmate of the Rookwood Asylum.

Annie's death certificate gave Gustavus' name as Wilhelm Heinrich Gustav Adolph Vollbracht, however it is noted that the informant on this certificate was not a relative.

Although his occupation at the time of his son's birth was Pastry Cook and at the time of his death, a baker, it is interesting to note, that his son gave his father's occupation as an Inspector or Artesian Bores at the time of his marriage in 1899. 13

7. James Herbert SALISBURY. Son of Jeremiah SALISBURY & Sarah POPE. Born 29 Oct 1853 in Stoney Creek, Jamberoo, NSW, AUSTRALIA 5. Christen 25 Dec 1853 in Jamberoo, NSW, AUSTRALIA 5. Died 27 Jul 1949 in Woonona, NSW, AUSTALIA 2. Buried 28 Jul 1949 in Bulli Cemetery, NSW, AUSTRALIA 14. Occupation Miner 3.

He married Martha CROMPTON, daughter of James CROMPTON & Mary DICKINSON, 25 Apr 1878 in Wollongong, NSW, AUSTRALIA. Born 20 Feb 1858 in Fairy Meadow, NSW, AUSTRALIA 2. Died 18 Jul 1943 in Woonona, NSW, AUSTRALIA 2. Buried 21 Jul 1943 in Bulli Cemetery, NSW, AUSTRALIA 2.

Martha was the sixth child of James and Mary Crompton, although at the time of her birth only two elder brothers were living. 1

It would seem likely that Martha met her husband through Sarah Salisbury who was one of the witnesses at their marriage, together with Martha's elder brother, John. 3

James and Martha were married at St. Michaels Church of England at Wollongong in 1878, when James was 25 years of age. The witnesses to their marriage were James' sister, Sarah and Martha's brother, John. As Martha was about the same age as Sarah, it is likely that they were friends. 3

They had the following children:

          15      i.        Sarah Elizabeth SALISBURY

          16      ii.       Ethel May SALISBURY

          17      iii.       Mary Louisa SALISBURY

          18      iv.      Herbert James SALISBURY

          19      v.       Frederick William SALISBURY

          20      vi.      Joseph Crompton SALISBURY

          21      vii.      John SALISBURY

          22      viii.     Reginald Clarence SALISBURY

James purchased freehold land at Bulli and Balgownie, however he was required to sell when declared bankrupt in 1899. The family remained in the Bulli and Woonona district and in 1913 they were residing at Russell St, Woonona.

Martha died of senility in 1943, six years before her husband. At the time they were living at Popes Rd, Woonona. All their children, with the exception of Mary Louisa who had died in her teens were still living. She was buried in the Church of England Cemetery at Bulli. 2

James then went to live with his daughter Ethel at 41 Popes Rd, Woonona. He sold his house to Joseph for 100 pounds.

James's death certificate states the cause of death was senility. 2

John married Margaret Lucinda Jemima MURRAY, daughter of William MURRAY & Emma RIXON, 10 Apr 1880 in Wollongong, NSW, AUSTRALIA 190. Born 9 Nov 1859 in Tambaroora, NSW, AUSTRALIA 39. Died 14 Mar 1928 in Bulli, NSW, AUSTRALIA 40. Buried in Bulli Cemetery, NSW, AUSTRALIA 14. Known As Lucy.

Margaret's birth was registered as Louisa MURRY. Her death was registered as Louisa Salisbury. 40

John and Margaret were married at St. Michaels Church in Wollongong according to the rites of the Church of England. He was a miner, residing in Bulli and she a servant residing in Wollongong. The witnesses to their marriage were John CRANE and Sarah SALISBURY, John's sister. 3

They had the following children:

          23      i.        Annie Lucinda SALISBURY

24      ii.       Sarah Isabella Mary SALISBURY

          25      iii.       William Murray SALISBURY

          26      iv.      Ada Matilda SALISBURY

          27      v.       Florence Ellen SALISBURY

28      vi.      John James Alfred SALISBURY

          29      vii.      Amy Adelaide SALISBURY

9. George SALISBURY. Son of Jeremiah SALISBURY & Sarah POPE. Born Dec 1857 in Jamberoo, NSW, AUSTRALIA 2. Died 13 Jan 1858 in Jamberoo, NSW, AUSTRALIA 2. Buried 1 Feb 1858 in Jamberoo, NSW, AUSTRALIA 2.

Young George died at 7 weeks of age of a cold and cough, which he had for 3 weeks. His death was recorded as Salesbury.

The details of death were extracted from the death certificate on a visit to the Registrar and although the date of death is recorded as 13 January, the burial did not occur until 1 February. It would seem very unlikely at that time to have such a lengthy delay in burial, particularly when there appears to be no suspicious circumstances. It is believed, that the child may in fact have died on the 30th, but that at the time the event was registered it sounded like the 13th.

10. Elizabeth SALISBURY. Daughter of Jeremiah SALISBURY & Sarah POPE. Born 14 Mar 1859 in Jamberoo, NSW, AUSTRALIA. Died 10 Jun 1860 in Jamberoo, NSW, AUSTRALIA 2. Buried 12 Jun 1860 in Jamberoo, NSW, AUSTRALIA 2. Religion Church of England 2.

Elizabeth died at 15 months of age of influenza, which she had for 7 weeks. She was buried in the Church of England Cemetery, at Jamberoo. 2

11. Sarah SALISBURY. Daughter of Jeremiah SALISBURY & Sarah POPE. Born 14 Mar 1859 in Jamberoo, NSW, AUSTRALIA 189. Died 1944 189 in Ryde, NSW, AUSTRALIA 39. Religion Wesleyan.

Sarah married William Gregory VEY, son of Charles VEY & Caroline Woolner JUNIPER, 28 Apr 1885 in Petersham, NSW, AUSTRALIA 3. Born 29 Jul 1856 in Shoreham, ENGLAND 3. Died 28 Mar 1893 in Newtown, NSW, AUSTRALIA 39. Occupation Engineer 3. Religion Wesleyan.

Sarah and William were married in Davies St, Petersham according to the rites of the Wesleyan Church. The witnesses to their marriage were William's brother, Peter Thomas Vey and Maria Provest. At the time, Sarah was 26 years of age and described as a spinster. William was aged 28 years, an engineer. Both were residing in Petersham at the time.3

They had the following children:

          31      i.        Myra VEY

          32      ii.       Charles VEY

          33      iii.       Alma VEY

          34      iv.      Janie VEY

12. Maria SALISBURY. Daughter of Jeremiah SALISBURY & Sarah POPE. Born 10 Aug 1861 in Stoney Creek, Jamberoo, NSW, AUSTRALIA 1. Died 8 Jul 1939 in Bulli, NSW, AUSTRALIA 14. Buried in Bulli Cemetery, NSW, AUSTRALIA 14. Occupation Servant 3. Religion Church of England.

Maria is the ninth child of Jeremiah and Sarah's ten known children. Like many of her siblings, Maria was born at Stoney Creek near Jamberoo. The witness to her birth was Mrs. E. Vidler. Her father was the informant. 1

Her family moved to Bulli when she was quite young, as her younger brother, Alfred was born there in 1864.

She married George REEKS, son of Philip Edwin REEKS & Ann FRY, 21 Jan 1880 in Wollongong, NSW, AUSTRALIA 3. Born 1 Jul 1858 in Macquarie Fields, NSW, AUSTRALIA 1. Died 18 Jan 1936 in Bulli, NSW, AUSTRALIA 14. Buried in Bulli Cemetery, NSW, AUSTRALIA 14. Occupation Labourer 3. Religion Independent.

George was the fifth of Edwin and Annie's six children; he was born in a tent at the Stone Barn near Macquarie Fields. Witnesses to his birth were Mrs Emma Howell (Nurse) and Mrs. Marsh. His mother, Ann, was the informant. 1 It is believed that George's father worked as a carpenter for the railways and that the family had followed the building of the railway line from Parramatta to Campbelltown. It is not known when the family settled in the Wollongong district, although they were there at the time of George's father's death in 1866.

At the time of her marriage to George, Maria's father, Jeremiah was described as a Bushman. The couple were married according to the rites of the Congregational Church. Maria's sister, Sarah and George's brother, John were the witnesses to the marriage. Although the marriage certificate states that Maria was 19, she was infact still only 18 at the time of her marriage.3

They had the following children:

          35      i.        Selina Fry REEKS

          36      ii.       Frederick William REEKS

          37      iii.       George Edwin REEKS

George died just 3 days before his and Maria's 56th wedding anniversary. He was 77 years of age.

13. Alfred SALISBURY. Son of Jeremiah SALISBURY & Sarah POPE. Born 21 Sep 1864 in Bulli, NSW, AUSTRALIA 164. Died 20 Sep 1946 in Coonabarabran, NSW, AUSTRALIA 164. Buried in Coonabarabran, NSW, AUSTRALIA 42. Occupation Surveyors Labourer (1887)3. Religion Church of England.

Alfred married Alice TAAFFE, daughter of Patrick TAAFFE & Kate ANDERSON/HENDERSON, 29 Dec 1887 in Pyrmont, NSW, AUSTRALIA 3. Born 8 Feb 1867 in Dublin, IRELAND 164. Died 8 Sep 1950 in Coonabarabran, NSW, AUSTRALIA 164. Buried in Coonabarabran, NSW, AUSTRALIA 42. Occupation Domestic Servant (1887)3. Religion Catholic.

Alice immigrated to Australia with her twin brothers, John and Patrick on board the Smyrna in 1883 when she was 17 years of age.

Although she was Catholic, Alice and Alfred were married according to the rites of the Church of England at St. Bartholomew's Church, Pyrmont in Sydney. Alfred was a surveyor’s labourer and living at Burwood, whilst Alice was a domestic servant living at Homebush. The consent of E. Ward Esq, Registrar General was given, as Alice was under 21 years. The witnesses to their marriage were Elizabeth KEYS and Edward LOYDELL.3

It is said that Alice was 'disowned' by her family for marrying outside her faith.

They had the following children:

          47      i.        Percy SALISBURY

          48      ii.       Kathleen SALISBURY

          49      iii.       Dorothy SALISBURY

          50      iv.      Margaret SALISBURY

          51      v.       Alice SALISBURY

          52      vi.      Ellen SALISBURY

          53      vii.      John SALISBURY

          54      viii.     George B. SALISBURY

          55      ix.       Alfred James SALISBURY

          56      x.       Marjory M. SALISBURY

Alfred and Alice lived in Sydney for a time after their marriage and their two eldest children were born there. They moved to the country and the births of their children indicate that they were living near Narrabri in 1894. Alfred was granted a Conditional Purchase Lease (CPL 16:32, Parish of Yuggel, County of Napier) near Purlewaugh in New South Wales some time in the early 1900's, the property became known as “Coralyn” and his name is on the lease on the 1902 YUGGEL parish map. The block had an area of 2764 acres (about 1260 ha) and adjoined a block of 1043 acres owned by his son-in-law Lawrence H Nelson. George B Salisbury farmed the neighbouring property “Yuggel” to the east of “Coralyn” and Leslie Mullens farmed the neighbouring property “Yarrawonga” on the western side of “Coralyn”. It appears from the copy of the CPL 16:32 that the property may have been purchased for about 1800 pounds in 1916. Jack took over “Coralyn” from Margaret when she moved into Coonabarabran around 1960. The family held Alfred’s property until the early seventies. 209

Alfred, Alice and their children Alfred James and Ellen are noted on the 1925 Electoral Roll at Coralyn, in the district of Purlewaugh. Their son, John is recorded in 1928 at the same residence. In 1944 the following family members were listed on the Electoral Roll at Coralyn: Alfred, his wife Alice, his two unmarried sons Alfred James and Percy and his unmarried daughter, Ellen. 31

It appears that Frederick and Johanna first child was born in Woonona and that they moved to Broken Hill some time between 1904 and 1906.

It is possible that Frederick may be the one who married Ada Irene Couch at Broken Hill in 1941. He would have been 60 years of age at the time.40

To date, his death has not been confirmed.

George went blind in his late thirties. He died when aged 47 years, his wife; Mary however lived until she was 98 years of age.

38. Emma Sarah REEKS. Daughter of George REEKS & Maria SALISBURY. Born 26 Aug 1885 in Bulli, NSW, AUSTRALIA. Died 27 Apr 1978 in Turrella, NSW, AUSTRALIA 4. Buried 1 May 1978 in Woronora Crematorium, Woronora, NSW AUSTRALIA 4. Occupation Domestic 3. Religion Church of England.

Emma and Bartholomew Metcalfe were married in Petersham by a Salvation Army Officer. The witnesses to their marriage were Emma's sister, Selina and her husband William Walker, who also happened to be Bartholomew's step-brother. 3

Bartholomew went to work at South Bulli mine on 25 September 1895 at the age of 15 and was employed underground by a contractor. Bartholomew was killed in a mining accident at Bulli Colliery just 9 months after his marriage to Emma. The cause of death found by a Coroner's Jury Inquest held at the Court House Bulli was a fractured skull.

The following appeared in the Illawarra Mercury of Wednesday November 16, 1904:

A miner named Bartholomew Metcalf, 24 years of age, was killed in the South Bulli colliery at about 6 o'clock on Friday evening through a fall of coal. One piece of about a ton weight fell on the upper portion of his body, crushing his skull. An inquest on the body was held on Saturday before Deputy Coroner J. Hart, JP., when the jury returned a verdict of death from injuries accidentally received. Deceased had been married about eight months.

She second married Robert HAILS, son of Robert Cornelius HAILS & Isabella COURT, 6 Feb 1909 in Helensburgh, NSW, AUSTRALIA. Born 20 Feb 1883 in Clifton, NSW, AUSTRALIA1. Religion Church of England.

The informant and witness of Robert's birth was his grandmother, Isabella Goundry. It is known however that Isabella did not marry Joseph Goundry until 1886. Isabella also stated that her daughter and son-in-law were married in England, when in fact they were married in Newcastle, NSW. She also stated that her daughter, Isabella was born in England, when she too was born in Newcastle. It is not known why she gave false information to the Registrar, except perhaps to cover the fact that she was living with Joseph Goundry without being married, although her husband had died in 1880. Is it possible that she left her husband prior to his death and moved to Clifton with Joseph ?

Robert first appeared on Electoral Rolls in 1906, a resident of Helensburgh, his occupation listed as Miner. He remained in the South Coast area for many years. 31

Emma married Robert Hails at Helensburgh according to the rites of the Methodist church in the home of Robert's stepfather, Benjamin Batey. The witnesses to their marriage were Robert's brother, John and his sister, Isabella. 3

They had the following children:

          149     ii.       Ivy Sarah HAILS

          150     iii.       Robert George HAILS

          151     iv.      Myrtle Annie HAILS

          152     v.       John Concord HAILS

          153     vi.      Alfred William HAILS

Robert purchased land at Helensburgh in 1916 from his brother-in-law Charles Campbell. This land is described as Portion 597 and was located on Boomerang St, Helensburgh. He sold the land in 1918. 32

Robert and Emma were living at Coledale when their daughter Myrtle Annie was born in 1914.

It would appear the family moved shortly before this, as Robert and Emma's two younger children, were born in the Sydney suburb of Concord in 1917 and 1918.

By 1925, Robert had reappeared on Electoral Rolls at Helensburgh.

Robert and Emma were legally divorced in May 1926.

In 1932 Emma and her children were residing at 30 Hannan St, Arncliffe.30

Robert married Eileen Moon at the Registrar's Office at Canterbury in 1927. At the time he was working as a Council Labourer and they were both residing at Lakemba. The witnesses at their marriage were W. A. Dalton and Doreen Murphy. 3

In 1932 Robert was residing at 27 Pentland Avenue, Punchbowl.30 It is believed that at some stage he had property in the vicinity of Waterfall. Robert later moved to Bathurst and was residing at Perthville when he died in 1957 aged 76 years of myocardial degeneration, which he had suffered for several years. The informant at his death was his son-in-law, R. T. Pethybridge. 2

The following funeral notice appeared in the Sydney Morning Herald of Tuesday, 24 September, 1957:

HAILS - The relatives and friends of the late ROBERT HAILS of Waterfall and Bathurst, are invited to attend a graveside service at Wornonora Cemetery at 2pm., today, Tuesday. (Full service Bathurst, Monday.)

No mention of his death could be found in the Bathurst papers of that time. Robert did not leave a will, however, his son by his second marriage, Robert John, made application to the Supreme Court to administer his father's estate. This was granted 1 June, 1961. 82

Emma never remarried and was 92 years of age when she died. 27

She married Norman PACK, 19 Mar 1927 in Woonona, NSW, AUSTRALIA 102.

The following has been extracted from the Salvation Army Periodical "War Cry" following Ethel's death in 1979:

As Ethel Walker, Mrs Pack came from a Salvationist family well known in the corps at Woonona, NSW. It was there she was sworn-in as a soldier, by the late Commissioner William McKenzie.

Prior to her entry to the training college in 1924, when she became a member of the Dauntless session, she served as corps secretary at Bexley. At her commissioning, to her surprise, she was given the rank of captain and appointed to the command of Broken Hill South corps, which was to be followed by appointments to St Peters, Penrith and Liverpool.

Whilst at Broken Hill she met her life partner and they were married in 1927, at Woonona. Eighteen years were spent together in 11 field appointments, including Dulwich Hill Temple, North Sydney, Campsie, Petersham and Brisbane City Temple.

She was an eloquent speaker and many of her addresses have long been remembered, especially as she served with her husband in divisional headquarters appointments in the ACT and South NSW and South Queensland, where she had special responsibility as divisional home league secretary.

She also worked untiringly as a worthy representative of the Army with outside organisations such as the Traveller's Aid Society and the National Council of Women.

Mrs. Pack was well known for her readiness to help and for the personal initiative and energy with which she applied herself to her work. This added immeasurably to the success of her husband's work, particularly during the nine years prior to retirement when he served in prison rehabilitation work and while he was the territorial men's social secretary. During the years of retirement, though unable to take active part due to ill-health, she exercised a prayerful interest in many.

Her children, Norman, Gweneth (Mrs Hosking), Gordon, Clive and Joan, will cherish the memory of a mother who was loving, understanding and compassionate.
