Stewart Family of Scotland

The origins of my Stewart family have been difficult to determine. It would appear they were from either Lanarkshire or Wigtonshire and records have been found in both counties. I am hopeful that census records will ultimately help to ascertain more detail on this branch of my family.
My direct line of descent is indicated in Bold typeface.

1. Shaw STEWART
. Died Before 1881. Occupation Tailor (Journeyman) 13.To date details regarding Shaw are very limited.
It is possible that Shaw is the child of Shaw STEWART and Marion CUNINGHAME who was baptised at Stewarton, Ayrshire on 22 March, 1807. If so, Shaw Snr's marriage is also noted, as is his likely baptism in 1773.
8He married Mary McLELLAND, 29 Jun 1834 in Barony, Lanarkshire, SCOTLAND
7. Died Before 1881.Mary's marriage to Shaw Stewart in 1834 and the baptisms of her first two known children are recorded in the name McLELLAN, although she is recorded as Marion, not Mary at John's baptism. The baptisms for her two daughters in Wigtonshire are recorded in the name of McLELAND.
Her daughter, Martha's marriage certificate gave her mother's name as Martha McLAREN (although this could have been an error on part of the minister). Martha named her eldest daughter, Mary McLelland - as is Scottish tradition of naming the eldest daughter after their maternal grandmother.
It is possible that Mary's baptism is one of the following
8:17 Aug, 1806 daughter of Agnes MCLELLAND at Penningham, Wigtown.
16 Nov, 1806 daughter of Andrew MCCLELLAND and Agnes MCCORMICK at Old Luce, Wigtown.
25 Jan, 1807 daughter of William MCCLLELLAN and Agnes SAMSON at Ochiltree, Ayrshire.
30 Jan, 1807 daughter of William MCCLELLAN and Mary at Stranraer, Wigtown.
Shaw and Mary had the following children:
2 i. John STEWART
3 ii. Agnes STEWART
4 iii. Mary STEWART
5 iv. Rose Ann STEWART
6 v. Martha STEWART
Their first two children, John and Agnes were baptised in Glasgow in 1835 and 1836 respectively. They are known to have lived in Stranraer, Wigtown for a time, as their daughter, Mary was baptised here in 1844 and then they appear to have moved to Inch where their daughter Martha was baptised in 1852.
Although the 1851 Census for both Inch, Wigtown (LDS Reel 0103774) and Stranraer, Wigtown (LDS Reel 103775) have been examined, no record could be found of Shaw or his family.
17 Both records were however extremely difficult to read.Only two of their children have been identified on the 1881 Census, which indicates that Shaw's daughter, Martha was born in Stranraer, and that the other daughter Rose Ann was born circa 1844 in Glasgow.
It is understood that additional children may have included James and Shaw however, to date no details of any baptisms can be found. The only Shaw Stewart found on the 1881 Census Index for Lanarkshire was a female widow aged 53 years.
Both Shaw and his wife, Martha were deceased at the time of their daughter, Martha's marriage in 1881.

Rose and her family have been identified on the 1881 Census and were residing at 133 Springburn St, Glasgow. She was living with her husband, Samuel and their six children. Her sister, Martha was also living with them at the time.
38At the time of the 1891 Census, the family were living at 22 Kennedy St. Rose's birthplace was given as Govan. The five boys were still residing with their parents at the time and it is believed their daughter, Mary was now married to Peter Dawson as they were visiting on the evening of the census.
21 . Daughter of Shaw STEWART & Mary McLELLAND. Christen 6 May 1852 in Inch, Wigtownshire, SCOTLAND 28. Died 18 Jul 1903 in Glasgow, Lanarkshire, SCOTLAND 4. Occupation Cotton Winder 3. Religion Presbyterian.Martha was baptised 110 years exactly before the birth of her great-great grand-daughter, Vicki Hails. Martha's parentage has been difficult to determine, as it appears that her parents were married some 18 years prior to her baptism and have moved from Glasgow to Wigtonshire. Unfortunately, they have not as yet been identified on any Census records.
In addition to her known siblings, Martha may have also had brothers named Shaw and James, and a sister named Rose. There is a marriage record on the IGI for a Rose Ann STEWART to a Samuel COCHRANE dated 11 Nov 1867, Central District, Glasgow, Lanarkshire. The Cochrane family (specifically Sam and Rose) are referred to in notes kept by Albert Garrett.
She married
Albert GARRETT, son of Benjamin GARRETT & Caroline ANSTEY, 6 Apr 1881 in Glasgow, Lanarkshire, SCOTLAND 3. Born 30 Jul 1854 in Westminster, London, ENGLAND 1. Died Jul 1939 in Glasgow, Lanarkshire, SCOTLAND 4. Buried 27 Jul 1939 in Riddrie Park Cemetery Glasgow, Lanarkshire, SCOTLAND 4. Occupation Printer-Compositor (Journeyman) 3.Thomas Crawford, a family friend and Mary Russell witnessed Albert and Martha's marriage. Albert and Martha were residing at 3 and 11 Black St, Glasgow, respectively. Both Martha's parents were deceased at this time, as was Albert's father, Benjamin.
3At the time of the 1881 Census, Martha was not living at the 11 Black St address given at the time of her marriage, however Peter Drummond and his wife Agnes were residing at this address. Albert Garrett made many references to the Drummond family, a Peter Drummond being a 'cousin', however their exact relationship to the Garrett's and Stewart's is not known at this time.
4Martha has since been identified on the 1881 Census via the index. She was infact residing with Samuel Cochrane and his wife Rose Ann and was described, as Samuel's sister in law, confirming previous belief that Rose was infact Martha's sister. Their address at this time was 133 Springburn Rd. Martha was described as being unmarried, 27 years of age, born in Stranraer and her occupation was given as Threadmill Worker.
38Unfortunately, Martha's son, James was not residing with them at the time, and an extensive search of the 1881 Census Index has failed to locate a positive entry for him.
Albert appeared on the 1881 Census at 3 Black St, Glasgow, where he was described as a boarder, aged 26, Printers Compositor, born England. He was residing in the home of Joseph Buxton who has been mentioned in family papers as a family friend.
20 (LDS Reel 0203649) The index to the 1881 Census, records Joseph as James (Jas.) and Albert by the surname, GARETH. 38Albert and Martha had the following children:
13 i. James STEWART
14 ii. Albert Anstey GARRETT
15 iii. Mary McClelland GARRETT
16 iv. William Anstey GARRETT
17 v. Caroline Anstey GARRETT
18 vi. Martha Stewart GARRETT
19 vii. Elizabeth Scotland Ronald GARRETT
20 viii. George Anstey GARRETT
At the time of the 1891 Census, Albert and his family were residing at 184 Parliamentary Rd, Glasgow, he was aged 36, a Printer Compositor, born in England. His wife, Martha, also aged 36 was born at Stranraer, Wigton. Their children included James, aged 13, Message boy, born Paisley, Renfrew, Mary McL, William A., Caroline A., and Martha S. were all born in Glasgow.
21 (LDS Film 0220288)Albert kept details of family events including the births and deaths of all his children, in addition to details concerning other family members and possible family friends. These notes are in the possession of his grand-daughter, Helen Forest Martin, nee McDougall, and a copy is also retained by her grand-daughter, Vicki Hails. These papers refer not only to the GARRETT family, but also the DRUMMONDS (cousins and an aunt, Jane), COCHRAN, MOFFATT, BUXTON, WILSON, WATSON and KERNS.
It is believed that the COCHRAN's and WATSON's were the married names of Martha's sisters, Rose and Agnes. It is not known if the DRUMMOND's were relatives of the GARRETT's or STEWART's. Although an entry on the 1891 Census did reveal a Jane McLAREN with a niece named Jane DRUMMOND at 169 Dobbies Loan (an address referred to by Albert).
Martha was just 49 years old when she died in 1903 of Phthisis (consumption) at 20 Charlotte St, Port Dundas, Glasgow. The informant was her husband, Albert.
2In his later life, Albert resided with his daughter, Caroline and her family at 117 McAslin St, Glasgow and died in 1939 a few days before his 85th birthday.
