Yeeles Family of London, England
![]()
Despite the unusual name, I have been unable to find very much at all about the Yeeles family to date. I have recently had contact with John Yeeles, a fellow descendant, so hopefully between us we will be able to find out more about this family.
My direct line of descent is noted in bold typeface.

1. Thomas YEELES
. Born c1770 86. Died 18 Feb 1844 in Bermondsey, London, ENGLAND 86 . Occupation: Leather Dresser/Labourer/Engineer 13, 86.He married
Hannah JESTICO, daughter of Joseph JESTICO & Elizabeth MARSHMAN, 21 Jan 1815 in St. Leonards, Shoreditch, London, ENGLAND 6. Christen 28 Oct 1781 in Goodworth Clatford, Hampshire, ENGLAND 8. Died 22 Nov 1842 in Bermondsey, London, ENGLAND 86.According to the Bishops Transcripts of St. Leonard's Shoreditch, Thomas and Hannah were married by George Hendricks, curate in the presence of George Limming and Sarah Wood. 86
Thomas and Hannah had the following children:
2 i. William YEELES
3 ii. Elizabeth YEELES
4 iii. Thomas YEELES
5 iv. Fanny YEELES
Thomas was living at the time of his son, William's marriage in 1840 and also at the time of the 1841 Census when he was living in Salisbury Lane (now Wilson St) with his wife Hannah. He was aged 71 and Hannah 61 years, neither being born in the county. At this time Thomas was described as a Labourer. 86
Thomas' occupation has differed on three available documents. In 1840 he was described as a Leather Dresser. In 1841 on the census he was a labourer and the following year at his daughter, Fanny's marriage he was described as an Engineer.
Thomas died in 1844 of typhus fever at 19 Hanover St (now Neston St) Bermondsey. His death was recorded in the name of YEALS. It also stated his age as 62 (he was 71 at the time of the 1841 census). The witness was Sarah Moore who signed with her mark. 86
The name Yeeles is much more popular than I expected, with 765 entries on the IGI. A large majority of these being in Gloucestershire. There is a strong possibility that Thomas originated from there also.

6.Fanny is the youngest of Thomas and Hannah's four known children.
She married
Anthony COOPER, son of James COOPER, 16 Oct 1842 in St. John's, Southwark, London, ENGLAND 22. Born Before 18213. Occupation Carpenter 3 /Gentleman's Coachman13.Anthony and Fanny were married in the Parish Church of St. John, Southwark in London. Both were of full age, meaning they were over 21 years. He was gave his profession as a carpenter, his father, James Cooper was a cordwainer, and her father, Thomas Yeeleas, an engineer. Fanny signed the register, while Anthony signed with his mark. Witnesses to their marriage were John and Sarah HURLEY (?).
They had the following children:
i. Elizabeth Catherine COOPER
ii. James Anthony COOPER
iii. Sarah Ann COOPER
iv. William Thomas COOPER
At the time of the 1851 Census Fanny has been identified at 9 Haples Rents, Rotherhithe, London (LDS Reel 0174819), she was described as the head of the household, aged 31 years and born in Bermondsey. Also residing with her were her children: Catherine COOPER, daughter, 7 yrs, born Bermondsey and James COOPER, son, 2 yrs, born Newington. Her husband has not been identified anywhere on this census at this time.
At her daughter Sarah's birth, Fanny's maiden surname was recorded as YEELEAS.
It would seem most likely that both Anthony and Fanny were deceased at the time of the 1881 Census Index. They were not found on either the Middlesex of Surrey listings. Although an entry for a 62-year-old Fanny Cooper who was born in Bermondsey was found, her husband's name was Edward Cooper and he was described as a Supert. of Shipping.
