W. H. Hall was a child of only 4 years when he came to this county. He entered upon his business career as a
school teacher, which profession he followed for two years. He was afterward emplyed in the County Clerk's office, and in April, 1887, he was elected City Clerk, which position he held for six years, discharging his duties with promptness and fidelity. In 1893 he was elected Mayor of the city, (Edwardsville, IL), and is now filling that position with credit to himself and satisfaction to his constituents. On the 6th of April, 1870, Mr. Hall married Jennie Chapman, daughter of Joseph and Rachel (English) Chapman, the former a native of North Carolina, and the latter of New York. Mr. Hall is a member of the Masonic and Odd Fellows' societies. Aside from his official duties he is engaged in the abstract business with George Leverett. As a Mayor his is popular with those who desire good government and are in favor of the enforcement of the laws. His well spent life and his honorable, upright career have gained him universal confidence and esteem. At the breaking out of the Civil War he enlisted in Company K 7th Illinois Volunteers and later enlisted in the
32nd Illinois Volunteers serving through the entire war. His family moved to Litchfield in 1865. Being a carpenter, he worked at his trade a number of years. They lived at 1224 North Madison St for 30 yrs. For twenty years he served as a justice of the peace and also conducted an insurance agency. He was a man of very reserved disposition.

Taught school in Woodlawn and Carlinville, IL until Feb 1890. He came to Ventura CA where he followed the
plasterers trade. He then moved to Santa Paula and purchased Brewster's Photo Gallery, which he operated until 1895. While in partnership with Edward Riley of Ventura, he engaged in the undertaking business. Dec 1896 he purchased his partners interest. May 11, 1896 is the first entry in his book and his last entry is June 5, 1919. In 1899 he bought J. B. Beardsley's furniture business, established in 1887. In 1908 he erected a new building known as King Furniture Co. The building burned down Dec 30, 1929. The King furniture store was left to the 5 children.
