When a fine upstanding successful farmer citizen like Joseph Dothard passes away at the age of 85 it is deserving of more than passing notice. The Dothards and their descendants have made a fine name for themselves in this county, First there were Jimmy and Billy Dothard, two old bachelors who came to this country with their sister several years before the War Between the States, from the town of Larne, County of Antrim in Ireland, about thirty miles from Belfast. These two old bachelors, Jimmy and Billy Dothard, sometime in the fifties (1850), bought the Arbacoochee Gold Mine lands now in Cleburne County, and had much litigation about it . The Alabama Reports show the cases involving title to these lands went to the Supreme Court three times. They finally won, however, and in t he 70's sold the gold mine for something over $100,000.
The sister of Billy and Jimmy Dothard remained with and kept house for them and she has many descendants in this county, amount whom are Pinson s, Milligans, Leydens, Neals and others.
Jimmy and Billy Dothard after their good fortune in selling their gold mine, wrote to their nephews who resided in the County of Antrim near Belfast, advising them to come to Calhoun County, Alabama. Huey Dothard came first, then Joe Dothard came in 1872, then came James Dothard, and then Tom Dothard came, James Dothard was the grandfather of Maj. G en James E. Parker, a graduate of West Point, who made a fine name for gallantry in World War II, and lost his life by a plane going down with him after the surrender of Germany and Japan.
To return to Joe Dothard, about whom this sketch is written, he was known for his kindness of heart and his integrity of character and his great common sense. He was one of the most successful farmers in the county and his example should be an inspiration to other farmers.
